More Time To Get Fit - 2025

Hey bud, i know it’s scary but, I know two big, active, guys in their late 50’s who have done the shoulder replacement with fantastic results. They wished they had done it sooner. Its a long, slow, boring recovery but the payoff has been worth it. If that’s on the table for you, try not to be too bummed.

Thanks Mike.

I know a couple as well. One was an X-NFL dude and he had both knees and both shoulders.

I figure if it goes that way I will do it in November so I can ride the last two rallies and have recoup time before the weather gets good. Really hoping it is just a scope clean and therapy deal.

Good luck with the doctor @budman . Hopefully you don't have to jump through too many hoops to get past the "ice and NSAIDs" phase of lame doctor advice.

Bud, we know a "knee guy" int he area who sells the materials to doctors. He's a good resource for which docs are good and is a long time ex AFMer. If he can help, ping me. Also, before surgery would you be up for trying other less invasive options (depending on what the scan finds)?

That sucks Budman. I hope it gets better for you soon. I had a labrum tear that I put off repairing for years due to insurance issues and my shoulder would pop out if I looked at it wrong and it was night and day once I got it fixed. don't be like me and wait so long to fix it.

On a side note made it to the gym twice this week and should be able to hit it today and tomorrow so things are looking up. Did legs on Tuesday and today it is a pain going up and down the stairs to my home office. but must power through it. tonight is back stuff which is one of my favorite days so something to look forward to I guess. Weight is staying around the same but do see some signs of muscle building up so will probably stick with what I am doing and then do a weight loss cycle in a bit.

To my knowledge, shoulder replacement is not as standard as knee and hip replacement.

I was diagnosed with moderate arthritis in my left shoulder 10 years ago, it' hurts like hell during my first circuit in the gym, then gets better after that.

Sleeping can be rough, if I put my arm in the wrong position, I wake up with my shoulder on fire and feeling like it's dislocated.

I go through the pain in the gym because I'm not going to let my shoulder hold me back.

Good luck, @budman. My boss had shoulder surgery a few years ago. He was a miserable MOFO before and was a much happier man after.

I was the same way before I got my labrum repaired but I did have to be super careful in my movements but I think it helped stabilize it before the surgery

Thanks TWT.

One week until I see the Medical staff that can’t do shit except point me to someone that can. :rolleyes

Maybe an Xray….. but we all know that won’t tell the story.

On the good side landed back at my lowest weight and yesterday a friend I had not seen in a while asked me if I needed a hamburger. :laughing

One week and 5 days until the Lassen Gravel Adventure. I’m getting excited. However my training took a nosedive over the last couple of weeks. We decided to sell our house so getting it ready has taken all of our free time. I will say though, this little break seems to have been beneficial for me. I did a 24 mile ride this past Saturday in 95+ degree temps and it was way way easier than when I did the same ride two months ago. I followed it up with a 13 mile ride yesterday in similar temps and again, way way easier than before.

We have gotten most of our house prep to do list complete so I will be able to get in a few more rides in (I’m planning for them to be easy) before my race.

My buddy Mr T (HOF BMX / CA SR. BMX Champ /Trainer) gave me a spray that he uses for his aching body parts.
He is 57 and still riding up PageMill Etc. twice a week min. for training, besides other stuff and one dude I still consider an a competitive athlete above 50yo.

I started using it 4 days ago and after 2 days I found the constant pain gone. Yes it hurt doing stuff, but only then.
Second night I was able to stretch the shoulder getting a much better range of motion. That has remained so far.

It has camphor and some secret sauce stuff that his Dr. Friend stirs up. He trains the Doc and the Doc realizes that T is still pushing his body hard. Really cool.

That looks like a really cool ride! If i was free that weekend I would consider sighing up late. Are you going full Squatch?

Anyone exercise with Covid? When did you resume your workouts? Did it cause any delays in recovery? I waited until the fever dropped and did upper body only last night. I took my time but this morning I’m a little short of breath and congested. Just can’t stand sitting around doing nothing.

I have only ever gotten Covid mildly. For me it was mainly exhaustion without much chest congestion. The exhaustion kept me from doing anything for 4-5 days easily. After that my cardio workouts were all low intensity for a while. Doable, but more of a maintenance routine than trying to build any new fitness. My uneducated bro science recommendation is, take it easy until you feel better. Long walk at the quickest pace you can manage to keep yourself sane maybe? I few sets of pushups here and there. If you have access to dip bars and a pull up bar, snack on those too. I know it can be frustrating to feel stagnant. Exercise snacks help my mental health a lot. Get well Soon!

I know that in the horse racing business they have some substances that do amazing things for recovery, but haven't been approved for humans...

Full Squatch, god no. It’s my first ever bike race/event and since I just got into riding seriously back at the end of April the 40 mile Short Squatch is a good place for me to start.

That's a great distance for getting back into it! You're gonna have a blast. Please take a few pics and report back when your done. I love seeing everyone's finish line smile. (or agony if your going nuts :laughing)

Hit. 221.8 this AM. Might make the 220 goal for a week from now.

Hit the Dr. for my shoulder too. XRay taken and referral to Ortho and Rehab made.
On a fun note... the BP machine in the room was F'd up.

They take it and I am 179 / 76... :wtf Nurse asked if I was dizzy... "Nope.. it is usually a little high the first time, but not anywhere close to that!"

She tried again saying relax and think of being in Hawaii sipping on a cocktail. I did that.... 180 / 76 :wtf

Then the Dr. came in and said the machine was F'd up and did it the old fashion way. 135/80 Not perfect, but still good for keeping off any meds. :afm199

She was asking about pain and I said that has subsided except when I am doing something with hit.

Shoulder properly snapped, crackled and popped for her when I was showing her that the range of motion is sucking at at the top end it sounds like grinding gears. She was :wow and immediately said Rehab and Ortho and I immediately said YUP.

Good stuff, you'll hit your goal in no time. I'm trying to lose a few as well, hopefully I can behave this weekend :drool

I was at the doc yesterday for my physical; first BP reading was high as is the case with me (white coat syndrome :laughing) second reading was 134/80. Beat you! Fortunate for me to not have any reason to be at the doc except for the yearly insurance thing.

Don't mess around with that rehab and ortho, doctor's orders! :ride

Great for you on weight, Budman!

I was down to 204.4 yesterday from 224 at start of summer. My goal is 190, a weight I haven't been at in over 2 decades.

Good luck with the shoulder! Mine has been f*cked up for a long time, but your grinding sounds like my knee over the past 15 years with my 4th knee surgery being 28 years ago.
