They are sadists. 100%. But, I had PT really early in life and got used to their sadism and work well with it so... I am just grateful Kaiser is like "We are continuing PT until the PT is happy with your progress." As of right meow, he is not. :x
 
I thought this was interesting. I know GCN isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I actually enjoy their content though.

@stangmx13 The mental side of competition fascinates me. I was thinking about how your last pre-race logistics might have played into your results as I watched this. I really believe how we feel emotionally before an event has a massive impact on our results.

 
The easiest way to kill a performance is to tell yourself “I can’t do it”. You usually end up being right.

Another easy way to screw it up is to set and focus on impossible expectations. Just barely beating your expectations will feel a lot better and will prob hurt a lot less than losing to your expectations. I’ve had moments in races where I thought things were going terribly. Then I noticed I was beating my goal and suddenly my legs stopped hurting :ROFLMAO:
 
Today I thought I would get some climbing in.

So on the elevation profile you notice a small up and down at the lowest point. That is the road up to the town of Iowa Hill which is a little over 2k of climbing and a goal I have for myself before the end of the year…I now see it’s possible. Three months ago I thought that what I did today was not possible but I took a swing and boom, did it. A little more training and I will do today’s ride and the ride up to Iowa Hill. Seeing this progress is really exciting.

Have you seen that new commercial I want to say its Ford but it has a voiceover that says something like " If you think you can do it. Or you think you can't do it, you are right." I am for sure mangling it but that is the gist of the commercial.

Another mental note to self don't do superset arm days right before mowing the lawn. Got a new to me Cyclone rake to stop having my yard look like dead grass clippings all the time. Well you have to empty it so I was using a rake to empty it at our burn pile and for the love of god all that extra arm work on top of the heat had my forearms and biceps screaming "No Mas" in short order but had to power through it which sucked. Luckily for me on Sunday the motor on the Cyclone rake wouldn't stay started so detached it and now sections of the yard have tons of dead clipping but my arms were saved. :ROFLMAO:

Hopefully this week will be calm at work, I was on conference calls for down systems 14 hours Monday, 9 hours Tuesday and Wednesday was a marathon 22 hours until 7am Thursday morning, so that I can stick to my normal 4 day schedule and not have to double up days.

What was stopping you from trying Iowa Hill before? The unknown? Too much total exertion? Too steep / too difficult to pedal going that slowly?

One thing that structured training has taught me is that tomorrow's workout can be just as important as today's. Wrecking yourself today so much that you can't perform tomorrow is far less productive than doing both workouts well. All that is easy to manage when someone else is writing your schedule. Or when you have clearly defined rest days, as there's more freedom to wreck yourself before a rest day. But it's good to be mindful of this all the time.

I find myself considering all this with non-workout life. I'm going to start replacing my fence this week and I'm going fishing really early on Sunday. I know both are going to add a bunch of strain that will make riding less productive. So I'll probably add in some naps and reduce the ride intensity a bit. Or maybe I'll replace a strength workout with a "fence" day, lulz.

It’s a big effort (for me) at 30 miles and 5k+ of climbing. And it’s steeeeeeeeep. I’ve really only been doing this since the very end of April. But like I said, I now see that it’s within reach.
 
At least it’s not 30mi uphill (right?). The downhill part will go really fast lol.

All the newer riders I’ve ridden with generally underestimate how far they can go. It’s likely due to them riding way too fast for the length of the ride - which is also my fault for riding with them and not forcing them to slow down.

Starting slow is how we get over massive climbs. Unfortunately, steepness will generally be an issue for that. Gravel gearing helps a lot. But sometimes the slowest you can go still isn’t comfortable enough.

This the right segment? Crazy how few people have done it.
 
No the ride would be from my house in Weimar to the town of Iowa Hill. It’s not really a matter of pace either, I go as slow as I need to and don’t let anyone else dictate my pace. I have a 1x (40t chainring) with a 11-51 cassette so it’s plenty low.

Yeah I didn't factor in emptying the dame grass container and the strain it would put on my arms. Lesson learned arms and shoulders now moved to Thursday as it didn't seem to effect my back at all so that will be done Fridays.

Hit the gym last night and during warmups felt a nasty twinge in the triceps so decided the better part of valor was to skip chest day to heal up so tonight is leg day so hopefully it goes as planned. May push chest to Thursday or Friday.

I just started PT for the shoulder yesterday. It went well and the gent was solid. Did a lot of PT when I was younger and racing MX, but not much since. Got the go ahead to do several exercises I stopped doing because of the pain so that is cool. There was no pain doing those so good to go. No pushups or shoulder specific stuff yet.

Also some good stretching stuff. The range of motion is bad so those will be vital I believe.

Bonus is he reviewed stuff for my very arthritic wrist. I have been doing the right stuff and he thought upping the stretching for that would be beneficial. I felt healthy and young compared to most of the patients there. :laughing

That’s awesome Bud. Stick with the program the PT gives you and you’ll be better than your old self before you know it.
 
Went back to Iowa Hill Road this morning. The goal was to ride more of the grade up to Iowa Hill and then turn around. I got in an additional 1,000 feet. I was hoping the grade would ease up but no dice. And I did something I never do, took a picture. You can see how deep this canyon is.
