Musal Lake is huge, five times the volume of Lake Berryessa. Its said if it did flood it would take four hours to flood Musal. Time to be outta town or too late? :laughing

Whether a bigoted remark or a foul joke, if it causes divisiveness it will be subject to the above TOS amendment.

Everyone can decide what it was on their own as it should be.

Is it then ok to say 1.5m Trump voters should die? I'm very confused by the TOS, seems subjective. This has nothing to do with politics, just trying to understand how one statement can lead to a vacation and another statement with a different target but stating the same thing is ok. Then the poster says he is trolling and its all lolz.

I don't understand barf at times.

Start another thread in website/geekspeak. We're not going to derail this thread any further.

So the same thing could happen to the San Luis Dam. Earthen Dam. Except 200,000 Mercedians.

Well, given that the Iraqi dam is huge, has much more pressure behind it, and the entire rock structure underneath it is eroding away and has to be pumped daily with thousands of tons of concrete, no. Given that none of these situations apply to the San Luid Dam, no.

Thank You so much.

I read Colossus a while back. It's about the construction of Hoover Dam, and a good read if you like the history stuff.

There was mention that the Dam has to be properly anchored in the bedrock because (here's the speculation part because the book didn't spend any time explaining it) the pressure behind the dam could force water into the rock below and "float" it off the canyon floor.

Any engineers or other bright people care to comment.

Is this what is happening in Mosul?

If it did happens it would be on par with the holocaust for human tragedy and evil forces having no regard for humanity.

But like all epic tragedies - there is an underlying motive of greed and profit from the deaths. I wouldnt be surprised is some tra wealthy developer somewhere isnt wringing his hands at the prospect of a rebuild contract if the dam goes.

That is the problem. Easy to blame Islamist extremists while oblivious to the under current of greed and selish desire for more wealth.

When a dam breaks, it doesn't just let loose splashing water like in bad movies, the water picks up everything in its path such as soil, trees and other debris. Rather than a wall of water rushing towards people and cities, its a wall of very fast moving, dense mud that crushes and smothers everything. A dam break is much more than a flood.

The potential for destruction in a heavily populated area is almost beyond imagining.

Read up on the Teton Dam break that happened in 1976 in rural Idaho.

One estimate placed damage to Hibbard and Rexburg area, with a population of about 10,000, at 80 percent of existing structures. The Teton River flows through the industrial, commercial and residential districts of north Rexburg. A significant reason for the massive damage in the community was the location of a lumber yard directly upstream. When the flood waters hit, thousands of logs were washed into town. Dozens of them hit a bulk gasoline storage tank a few hundred yards away. The gasoline ignited and sent flaming slicks adrift on the racing water.[12] The force of the logs and cut lumber, and the subsequent fires, practically destroyed the city.

Good god. Basically a mud tsunami. That's horrible!

How about just saying "I think a bunch of people should die and lower the population?". I often hear "thinning the herd" comments when taking population. Isolating a particular population is bad sure but what if the comment was, "let the dam break, to many people on the planet"??

So Seldom Seen Smith shouldnt have prayed for the collapse of the Glen Canyon Dam.

If you read the entire article, the Dam was built on limestone. Many engineers said, at the time, that erosion would be a huge problem as water, gasp, erodes limestone. And it is. They pump tons of concrete grout every day into the base. There are reports of huge voids being sounded and lots of water intrusion and passage. The head of dam steadfastly denies it's a problem, while paying for the daily repairs. There is a tunnel at the base of the dam whose entire function is to provide a platform for grout injection.

An Italian firm Trevi won a $300mm contract to repair the dam over 18 months. They have contingency plan and said permanent solution is to anchor the foundation much deeper.

Us Army Corps of Engineers said a 26% failure is most likely, so less than 500,000 IIRC from the article and Wikipedia page on the dam

I'm interested to hear updates on this project but most recent i have found is that they started repairs in September 2016.

Since they are Italian, that means they stopped work for the year in October and should be ready to start again early February. Think it will collapse before then? :twofinger:laughing

The muslim comment was a horrible thing to say, but this sets a terrible precedent for over the top suspensions. And the mod core now seems extremely susceptable to reverse psychology. Also concerning.

Was this dam built by the guys who built the Millennium Building?

Thanks for the reminder. I checked out of the thread when it went sideways in the second post.

What over the tops suspensions? Do you think that BARF should just be a free for all? Don't want to get suspended? Be civil. If you can't be civil, too bad for you. I've been suspended 3-4 times and none of them were over the top.

Grow up, folks.
