Musician thread

:confused Uhhh.. it plays good as is.

No, no it doesn't. It can be made better. I bet that the action is too high and the intonation is off. Put it this way...getting your guitar (or bass) properly set-up for your playing style is like, say, taking your bike to a suspension specialist. You wouldn't take a brand-new machine off the showroom floor straight to a trackday without some sort of prep, would you?

Playing style!?lulzerz:rofl My style is "learning" and NO I wouldn't take a stock bike without adjustments to the track:nerd But like I said... I think I'm still too N00b to know the difference:dunno Will adjusting that stuff REALLY make me a better guitar player??? I totally get what your saying but with me still learning and all will it really make that much of a difference?:confused

Yes yes yes. And its best to start learning on an instrument where your ear is trained to a well setup rig, not to mention how much easier it will be to play. I play drums, but played around on guitars enough to feel the difference in both finger position and tonal quality between an out of the box guitar and one thats had a trained luthiers hands on it before.

Dude, just leave your axe with me for a few days. I could at least check it for you. ;)

learned a scale (Am Pen)... now if I can get faster and more fluid with it!:rofl BUT! with this scale I have seen others use it in dope ass ways!

Cool! :thumbup

If you're not already doing it, this would be a good time to learn alternate picking.

Yeah:rolleyes I try that with the scale... still needs work work tho :laughing It slows me way down when i do it tho...:dunno practice makes prefect i guess...

You can work on alternate picking separately from playing the scale, which may help you to get comfortable with the motion more quickly.

As a starting point, you can just alternate pick a one note over and over to a metronome. This gets boring pretty quickly, but spend a little time trying to get your timing perfect and each note to sound the same (volume, tone, etc.).

Then, try the following exercise on the high E string:

E :1-2-3-4-2-3-4-5-|3-4-5-6-4-5-6-7-|5-6-7-8-6-7-8-9-|7-8-9-10-8-9-10-11-|
B :----------------|----------------|----------------|-------------------|
G :----------------|----------------|----------------|-------------------|
D :----------------|----------------|----------------|-------------------|
A :----------------|----------------|----------------|-------------------|
E :----------------|----------------|----------------|-------------------|

E :9-10-11-12-12-11-10-9-|11-10-9-8-10-9-8-7-|9-8-7-6-8-7-6-5-|
B :----------------------|-------------------|----------------|
G :----------------------|-------------------|----------------|
D :----------------------|-------------------|----------------|
A :----------------------|-------------------|----------------|
E :----------------------|-------------------|----------------|

E :7-6-5-4-6-5-4-3-|5-4-3-2-4-3-2-1-|
B :----------------|----------------|
G :----------------|----------------|
D :----------------|----------------|
A :----------------|----------------|
E :----------------|----------------|

To play this, begin in the first position (1st finger on 1st fret, 2nd finger on 2nd fret, 3rd finger on 3rd fret and 4th finger on 4th fret) and play the first four notes. Shift your hand up the neck one position and play the next four notes. Climb up the neck this way until you play the 12th fret. Then reverse the fingering and walk back down the neck.

This isn't musically much more interesting than playing one note over and over, but it does begin to coordinate the left and right hands.

By all means, continue to practice the scale too, but try warming up with these things first. You may find the scale a little easier after a few days.

I do warmups similar to TZRider's, and I also wear the finger weights to help build strength, accuracy and speed.
