Musician thread

Really like getting the 5150iii into the mix recording-wise, but getting the tone I want absolutely introduces unwanted noise. General consensus is a noise gate in the effects loop.

Ol Uncle Ben swears by the ISP Noise Decimator. I actually want it ALL gone and not just 10% so I’m hoping our friends at ISP are better at electronics than they are at the English language.

Edit...if anyone has a gate that works well for them, I’d like to hear about it.

Damn, El Feo... :laughing

I must have hit the lottery or you got the one that somehow slipped through QCI since mine required only minor setup adjustments. :dunno

Guitars are like moto’s and any other mass produced item, I suppose. You can grab two that came off the line within minutes of each other, one will be a treat while the other may be a hot mess.:dunno I can handle all the little issues and call it “character”, but I won’t compromise on tuning stability. That double string tree set-up puts sooooo much pressure on the nut that it prevents the trem coming back to zero consistently(yours is a hard tail if memory serves). And since its a feature present in every iteration of this model, returning it for another probably won’t help.

In other news...I just got email notification that my FM3 is on the way. They said 6mo and it hasn’t even been 2wks.:wow

Oh, and yesterday I decided to learn Master of Puppets figuring it wouldn’t tax my skill set too heavily.

Um, no. 220bpm is kicking my ass.:laughing Also, I’m an alternate picker and this tune sounds wrong unless it’s all inefficient down picking. After a couple hours my hand almost fell off.

Master of puppets is such a good album. It took me a while to be able to play thru it flawlessly, and then once you get through it, you realize the majority of the hetfield parts are done predominantly all downpicking, and that's another can of forearm killing worms. I still haven't played through most of hammett's solos only because I don't have a floyd rose to do those crazy pinch harmonic dive bombs he does

I'm left handed but play right handed. In my teens my right bicep was noticeably more developed than my left from all the downstrokes. By the time I discovered alternate picking, the damage was done. :laughing

Ah I didn't even notice the trem system. Yeah mine is a hardtail and has never had any tuning issues at all.

So I had to look up "economy picking" and watched this video...

...and I realized I've been doing this for years without even realizing it was a thing. It just made things easier for me. :laughing

Welp, after some extensive modifications(like, “I took my entire discount and handed it to my luthier guy” to make this guitar playable extensive) I’ve decided imma keep El Feo. I played this thing all day yesterday, and in fact, beat the shit out of it. The neck is the BEST feel I’ve ever encountered and the electronics are outstanding to my ear. The rest of the instrument is, well....:laughing

Wanna groove? No problem! El Feo comes with factory fret crown grooving! And let’s not forget the handy and innovative second fret marker.

Damn that fret leveling squared the shit out of your frets haha. Also that ding would kill me since I'm a thumb over-wrapper.

I found a boss katana 50 mk2 amp for 150 bucks on Craigslist today. Been messing with it all day. I'm just not vibing with my fender champ. It sounds absolutely amazing when I play my strat though it, but the only problem is that I hate playing my strat haha. And my les paul sounds like a I'm playing through a wet cardboard box plugged into the champ. Just too many lows and scooped mids. Every time I play through my marshall, I remember what my guitar is supposed to sound like, so a katana with a tube stack patch is my solution for busking and low volume practice.

That photo was taken before my guy re-crowned and polished every fret, among a gripload of other mods($200 worth). This Charvel pro mod 2 is an extremely poorly executed example of a great concept imo. The neck shape and the Fishmans electronics are stellar. But the factory and folks who shipped this one should be ashamed of themselves.

Bummer about the champ. But hey, scoring a workable solution for $150 is gold. And who knows, if you find the right buyer the strat and champ sold as a package deal might really make someone’s day.

Those frets were cringe-worthy. I used to crown my own and bust out the dremel w/mini polishing wheel when I did my own.

Has charvel been known for poor qc in the past? If I remember correctly, all I hear about them are good things, but yeah haha el feo got some problems haha.

I'm not going to get rid of the Champ yet. I think I'm going to keep my eye out for a decent deal on a nice 6 band eq and see if running it will mellow out the lows and give me more bite. The katana has been pretty cool so far. I found a silver jubilee patch for it, and I found an amazing clean tone patch from the dude from Andertons guitars in the UK. I'll probably just end up on that clean channel 99% of the time with my multi effects pedal adding any needed color

I have an ELP and don't regret it at all. Epiphone has really stepped up its game and Gibson's main line guitars are largely just overpriced anymore.
