Salt water reef tanks.

Goddamn, that's a nice brain. I'm battling some serious diatoms in my Edge right now and SOL since there are NO snails I can use for algae that won't flip themselves over.

I'll try to post pics.

Have you tried a sea hare? Those things eat algae by the bucket and flipping over isn't really an issue.

Factor, get cerith or nerite snails. They wont flip over. Also get some small nassarius. They should take care of you.

Genja, you have done some nice installs! I have done quite few as well. I need to start taking pics when I do it.

Don't know about getting it for such a small tank. It'll just devour all my algae in a day and then starve to death.

Hey didn't see this thread until now! Ive seen a lot of stuff, bareefers is my host. Here are some tank pics of people I have done stuff for.
... tried to upload as attachments but oh wells!

etc.

Love it when someone overcrowds their tanks like this. Makes it look more natural.

Thanks! I'll try to get a few nerites this weekend.

I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your local shops but mine will sell me one and let me return it for a partial refund. Usually get about 50% ton 75% of my money back depending on how long I had it. I had a huge hair algae issue that took me a while to get under control.

Factor5 "Love it when someone overcrowds their tanks like this. Makes it look more natural." =P
He he.... that's why its called a fish tank! If the kelp forest at Monterey Bay Aquarium was natural lookin' It'd be quite boring. I was actually amazed at the life in the ocean in Monterey, my dive buddy and I went for our first post certification dive at breakwater.
Then I thought, aquariums are packed sometimes, makes it interesting.

Question for you guys - I saw some pretty big clams in some of those tanks. Anyone have any idea if it would be feasible / possible to home grow pearls? And how long it would take for a decent size one? I had an idea to start growing now with an eye towards giving it to whomever I end up getting married to down the road...it's the romantic in me talking. Maybe grow several into a set of earrings/bracelet/necklace (yeah, yeah, yuk it up). Thoughts?

You watch too much Spongebob/Little Mermaid. Clams don't make pearls, oysters do.:laughing

Meh w/e. Oysters then. Feasible to self farm in your living room? (Though I'm not sure the cost of the tank, oysters, electricity, etc to keep them for years would be worth it).

My neon swordtails gave birth last week. Only lost 2 fry so far and they're starting to show color. If any BARFers want some in 2 months or so, I'll give them to you.

westie, nice elegance. how long have you had it for?

I've got a 14 nano. mixed sps and lps.

Almost a year now. Some things in the tank are really booming whereas others are fizzling. My anemone is starting to scare me with its growth. Really spreads out when the light comes on (2-250w mh's). The pulsing xenia is out of control. Growth in my sp's is slow yet noticable.

I found a great place in downtown hayward called aquatic collection. Huge selection of corals and most frags are $10. plus, they trade my xenia for frags.

I'll have to check this Aquatic Collection place out when the weather clears up(again)

I'm almost finished transferring everything over from my 12gal Eclipse to the 8gal Flora. Just have about 20 or so more red cherry shrimp but I'll post up some pics later.

I've had saltwater tanks since 2000.. I recently got out of the hobby and took down my big tank and sold off the 210g I was gonna set up... then a month later I setup a 3g then I upgraded to a 10g.. mines a mixed reef with LED lighting..

Alright. Anyone want some of these swordtails? They're a good inch/inch-and-a-half. Males already showing their swords and all colored up.

Free or a million dollars.

would you guys advise against a fish newbie going saltwater for their first tank?

:bump for an awesome thread :teeth
