School me on a 2010 BMW 800GS

i'd say get the latest years and don't go looking for the early batches ...too many recalls and even bmw lost count...

the motor isn't for everyone but over all, the s, st, and gs is one of my favorite bikes...

yeah there isn't much to get, or much funny there. it was a minor inside joke/jab at revnort, who once told me that he bought a whole box of the teflon chain lube he likes, which is kinda cool but also sort of absurd/silly sounding, fitting with the stereotype that BMW people are weird eccentrics or something.

I bought 5 travel sized bottles because they were 4$ each (good price) and I had to pay shipping anyway. I whopping total of 20 ounces btw :x:laughing

cool thing about bmw motorcycles is that they have any recalls or updates done before it's sold or at least catch it before the customer leaves with it whereas many japanese dealers do it after the customer rides off with the customer to have you come back and purchase other things you don't think you need...

Ok, that I get...:toothless

If you do go F800GS you really need a replacement windscreen if you do any highway, the stock one is completely useless. I went a little overboard with my Brittania Composites one, but I totally love it and it's like a night and day difference.

I'm also have Race Tech fork springs put in next Saturday, and I think I'll be "done" for now.

I hear people complain about both the seat and the wind screen and yet I have never felt compelled to change either. I wouldn't say it is a definite. :2cents

Well I got used to the lack of screen, but on my commute it's like a wind tunnel, so for me it was a "requirement"...vastly reduces my stress.

The seat is fine for a dual sport style, I did 300 miles on it (I know not that much),but the comfort seat is just soooo much better.

So you're right, neither are required, they're just nice to haves.

You definitely can't go wrong with RT mods. I had them on 2 bikes and they changed them completely. They were like brand new bikes. Best mods ever. You'll love them!

What ever happened with the Husky Nuda 900R? I can't find anything recent about it, but it's based on the F8GS IIRC

I just got my forks re-sprung at Evolution Suspension and I think it's a worthy upgrade for the $400 including parts and labor it cost. The springs on the stock F800 are really soft.

How much do you weigh?

What weight springs did you get installed?

Did you have the suspension revolved?

RaceTech has a rep for specing springs on the stiff side. Did you use their recommended spring for your bike and weight or did you fudge it down a step or two?

Do you take your 800 off road at all? (you'll want it softer if you do)

My clutch went out at 27,000. Whether or not you think that is low is up for debate apparently.

This is from my 09, although I am not sure if they got all the fixes in for to '10.

There is an issue (cosmetic only) on the seam around the gas tank. Not the tank itself but the plastic around it. Between the colored plastic and the black plastic cracks can occur. Take a look. They should replace it for free.

The wheel bearings are a known issue, keep an eye on them. Also should be replaced for free. My rear wheel bearings took a crap and destroyed the wheel hub. All replaced for free. That was at around 24k.

Chain and sprockets had a recall, although I am 90% that was first year only. no problems with mine but I got a brand new set for free at 18k. :party

Oil can seep out of the top end (very small amount) as the gaskets they had were designed poorly. This will usually happen after the valve checks. Also I think only a certain range in the first year. Easy fix anyway.

That's all I can think of right now.
.

I find this post depressing. I'm naive. I thought if you bought a BMW you wouldn't have shit like this happen, because they are so much more expensive....another balloon burst.

It's just an anecdote. I wonder if a consumer reports like organization does reliability checks for Motorcycle companies like they do for cars.
