School me on a 2010 BMW 800GS

... The F650 weighs just as much and is less capable. The G650GS is lighter and much less powerful and less capable off road as well.

Less powerful, yes. Less capable? Here are 3 to talk to/to read about:

Many actually prefer it because it's easier to work on, especially when you are in a third world country (or the Amazon forest). I'm really fortunate to have met these 3 and saw their bikes... plus several more unpublished ones.

That 'little bike' is quite an impressive one. :)

Back to the F800 GS. I've heard of the gas tank issue, shared with the F650GS twins, S, and ST back in 2009, that was taken care of and shouldn't be a problem for the 2010 and up.

If I remember correctly, the F650GS (single) became the G650GS after 2006 (or 2007?), when BMW released the F800S/ST, followed by the F650GS (twins) and the F800GS.

They were originally thinking of discontinuing the thumper GS (it was not for sale for about a year), then came back as the G650GS. There was a throttle kit you can buy in Europe to cap the F650GS (twins) HP down to 35 HP... I believe for the Learners/new rider purpose.

The F700GS is replacing the F650GS (twins)... even though, it's still short of the 800cc engine size. :laughing
