School me on a 2010 BMW 800GS

I've owned Ducati, Husqvarna, KTM, and MV Agusta - all bikes i've had to purchase parts for, and so far BMW has been the most expensive.

In my limited experience so far with my new GSA, this seems to be randomly hit-or-miss. I recently upgraded the skid plate on it from the stock one to the BMW Enduro plate. The BMW Enduro plate is arguably the best upgrade plate on the market (better, IMO, than any of the aftermarket plates) and yet at $319 is the same price or cheaper than most of the aftermarket plates.

Then, just when you think things are OK price-wise, the dealer wants $22 for a quart of final drive oil. :wtf

I dunno I paid like half of that for a Richochet skid-plate...but I just got it because I have no faith in the stock plastic one, not because I'm a serious off-roader, so I don't really have a way of determining quality :)

How much do you weigh?

What weight springs did you get installed?

Did you have the suspension revolved?

RaceTech has a rep for specing springs on the stiff side. Did you use their recommended spring for your bike and weight or did you fudge it down a step or two?

Do you take your 800 off road at all? (you'll want it softer if you do)

I weight about 175 with clothes. They asked me this before ordering the springs. I don't know what that means so I will guess no. I'm not sure which springs they went with I can check the receipt.

I rarely take it off-road..I want a mostly on-road specific ADV style tourer.

Not sure about the 800GS. The "top contenders" for the R1200GS/A skid plates are the Black Dog, Touratech, Altrider, and BMW Enduro. The TT and Altrider plates use the stock mounting points, which are somewhat flimsy. The Black Dog and BMW Enduro have more/stronger mounting points, and of those the BMW is actually less expensive.

I forgot you're on a different bike so comparing apples and oranges :)

Yup - when I do my own services I'll definitely shop there. This was what the dealer charged for the FD fluid change at the 600 mi service.

Ah. I thought you meant that's what they charged you just to buy the fluid from them.

Seriously though, the R engines are stupid easy to work on. You should be doing your own services. It's saving me a ton of money.

Agreed - the bike is very easy to work on. I plan to buy the JvB service DVD soon, as well. It's too bad the BMW don't sell a paper copy service manual. I've loved having one for every other bike I've owned.

To clarify (and sorry for the continued threadjack) the $22.59 (to be exact) was what they charged for just the FD fluid as part of the 600 mi service. Labor for the FD service was on top of that. I'm pretty sure if I walked in and asked for a quart of FD gear oil this is what they'd charge.

Slowpoke,,,700GS... no REALLY? OMG WAT. :laughing

I'm personally gonna wait for the 735GSi :x

Replacement for the thumper? :dunno
man, are you behind with the 'bmw times'... the F650GS is the twin in the recent years.

No it says right there it's the successor to the 650.

this explanation is be correct, but not sufficient. (it does indeed say "the direct successor to the F 650 GS. ") See above...

Shit, thought the 650 was a single. :laughing

In the spirit of preciseness and one-minute-later one-liners, actually "a 650" is a single. :p

Which "the 650" are you referring to?
Once again, it is/was because BMW sells The G650GS and The F650GS. Former is a single, latter is a twin.

Not my fault, that when ze Zermans talk about Rules & Regulations, it gets translated as Bumblefcuk and Drangelstein in the real-world.

I knew buying my 800 would be a risk if they came out with an F900 with neat electronic toys and adjustable suspension...damnit.

Made even more confusing because the current G650GS was originally called the F650GS.

This is what I've gone through every time I've ever bought anything new ever, not even car or motorcycle...buy latest shiny, enjoy a few months, and then the next greatest thing comes out...then I realize I'm still damn happy :)

...and even more confusing because the "F650GS" and now the "F700GS" both use the same 798cc engine in the F800GS that has been detuned to be 650-like (or now 700-like). :wtf

Frickin' Germans.
