SCUBA / Diving / Diving license

Alright enough trolling this thread!!!! You guys have me drooling at the chops here :twofinger I'm obsessed with the ocean and the beach. It's the one place where I feel at peace and calm. I've always body surfed, surfed, swam, and snorkeled. Mostly in SoCal and in HI when my wife and I visit her family from Oahu. Basically I LOVE the ocean and ocean life

I've ALWAYS wanted to get into SCUBA but it's always been on my "to-do" list and never got around to it. After reading this thread I'm ready to get this thing going. I'm piss-poor though so getting equipment is going to be difficult but I figured that I'll get it piece by piece.

I'm going to an intro orientation class this Thursday the 4th at Dive N' Trips to get pricing and all the info!!! Hopefully be able to go out with you guys sooner rather than later. I'm amped to start!

Anyone up for some Great White Shark Cage Dives in the Farallons on November 10th? ;) You get nearly as much time in the cage as you handle, and you'll have the privilege of having me be the DM as I do my best to distract the shark from eating you :)

Any cage dive plans in the near future? :teeth

+1 We'd be interested in that for sure.

And since I never followed after asking questions about Caribbean diving, I'll say that we did indeed go to Key Largo, Key West and Bonaire over xmas and it was very cool.

Bonaire is unlike any other place we've been (limited, admittedly) in that the reef ran the entire leeward length of the island (probably windward side too) and started about 20-30 feet in most places and just kept going. We got to about 110 at one point and the reef was still going as far as you could see, 40feet or so at that depth. It was one big continuous reef. I would have to say that the biodiversity is maybe not as good as the Pacific.

Here's a good picture I took:

The wifey takes way more better pics than me, so hopefully she'll post some up

I am sure it has been listed in this thread somewhere, but my lack of reading prowess and overall laziness have brought me here...

Where do you guys prefer to buy gear online? I need some new fins, the local dive shop didn't have anything my style. Any suggestions are welcome!

It would be Ben and I dont really know anyone else we know that dives.

I want to give it a shot this summer. I just don't want to dive in Monterey.

Can't I get certified in a nice warm lake? :teeth

Its not so bad! Plus you automatically get street cred for diving in cold water as your first dive. Then diving in warm water will be a piece of cake.

Monterey's visibility sucked when i went but people do come all over to see our kelp fields which are eerily beautiful.

Im MIGHT be doing my first warm water dive in December at the Bay Islands :teeth REALLY REALLY hoping we can pull off the trip.

Sweet.

Yeah, I know. If you dive Monterey you can dive anywhere.

Checked out Tahoe, didn't know you needed special training for altitude diving. Interwesting.

Bump.
I am going for my OW end of Sep. :party

Hopefully I will have the resource and time to play with you guys after I am certified.

Having depth withdrawls!!!! My gear won't arrive in Europe for another 2 months!

Now, the next question is: Should I risk going to Egypt or sneaking through Israel to get The Red Sea.

I would let Egypt "politically" cool down, get on a live aboard in Israel. The Red Sea would be amazing.
Or, train it to Amsterdam and take the 747 that flies to Sint Maarten/ St. Martin.
I went out to see some sharks when I was their a couple of weeks ago.

or, go to Norway and dive with nudibranch and Orca.

Any recommendations on dive sites in Oahu? My last experience there was pretty crappy (very choppy waters and not much to see).

I'm finally doing it!!!!! I got my books and am just starting the process...something I've wanted to do since high school XXXXX years ago :D

Looking forward to yet another hobby to spend money on and adventure!

LOL weasel. Get a dry suit !! Unfortunately for ya, Oyashivo come down from the North and hit the Bay Area with cold water. We've got great weather thanks to that. Point Lobos is a hell of a place to dive though.

I got certified years ago at SJSU. coach is NAUI. The guys who run it were associated to Anywater in Saratoga. I think they still are doing that. I went back a few years back for a refresher. So many outlet in the B.A. to learn the sport. JCs have classes or you can go private. They got charter boats down to Catalina. FUN stuffs. Go for it and enjoy !!!!! ;)

I am officially certified last weekend at Monterey. Water temp 57F. I thought I was going to be dead after I came out of water. Not that bad overall.

The sad part there were 6 studens, and 2 clowns in the group and it took all the time. I though we would have sometimes left for fun dive.
One student lost mask/snorkel while descending :laughing
The other one never followed where we went. We had to keep looking for her, she even lost her fin while swimming underwater :shocker

I am stoked !
I am still thinking about buying Vs renting.
