SCUBA / Diving / Diving license

I have my pool class on Tuesday then going to meet up with a Dive Instructor buddy in Huntington Beach. If he doens't certify me then I'm planning on a Channel Islands dive in Dec! I'm stoked about finally doing this too.

I am in the same boat about gear. I am learning as much as I can about computers, BC's and regs. Such a range in cost and many opinions. Kind of reminds me of motorcycle gear!

We did the channel islands in April. Note the vid above. It was AWESOME that was my first real dive outside of the diving i did to get certified.

Congrats on getting cert! Have fun on your trip. :thumbup

If anyone is up for a bit of adrenaline and adventure in The Red Sea, let me know. Despite the turmoil there, I'm still down to go anytime. I can make all the bookings from here.

Where were you lately ?
I am up Monterey dive any weekend !

Hey Chet - I moved to Germany back in August, and just started unpacking gear so I can get back in the water again.

Red Sea - Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt - February 7-20
Mediterranean Sea - Malta - Week around July 13th

So far those are my only trips. There's a lot of folk doing freshwater dives out here, but I'm reallllly not in the mood to battle 50 degree water and 5ft viz if I don't have to.

Anyone go on any pretty sweet dives lately? I heard Monterey viz has been fantastic this season with a ton of whale sightings.

I did fort ross last month and it was perfect. 40 FT. viz and water was about 55. I even found 15lbs of lead. I never find anything!

Last weekend I did 2 dives at Breakwater. These were dives after my open water.
My buoyancy was crab on the 1st dive, the 2nd dive got better. Vis is 25ft, quite surgy.

If anyone up for a fun dive on any weekend, let me know.

Figured I'd contribute a little to this thread since my wife and I just got PADI OW certified.

We wanted to get certified in Monterey before our trip to Oahu, but time didn't pan out so we did our class/pool work locally with Aquarius Dive Shop in Monterey and open water dives with Deep Ecology in Haleiwa on the North Shore. Since we live in San Jose and didn't want to drive down to Monterey for the classes at night, James @ Aquarius worked with us to do our class work after the pool work which while making for long days, worked out great.

Got to say I was really happy with both shops- the instructors were top notch. Both were easy going, but wanted to make sure we got it right. My wife started off a bit tentative about the whole thing, but ended up doing really well and is looking forward to diving in Monterey with Aquarius.

Ended up doing another day of diving with Deep Ecology with another of their DM's and he was really pro. We were with some friends who are experienced divers and another guy who was working on some certs and everyone had a great time. :teeth

No one dive local anymore or what...:cool

I only dive in Puerto Vallarta where my second home is ;) The water around here is just too damn cold for me.

'Zactly!

We keep meaning to get down to the Channel Islands. Former barf 'celebrity' poster TAKS just moved to Santa Barbara and has invited us down, so maybe that's a good enough excuse to finally go.

Is the diving good in PV? We talk about making a trip down there too.

It's also abalone season. You can take them freedive only.
It's my first ab season, I got the limit 3 last weekend. Anyone going ?

The water can be hit or miss, there have been a lot of really nice days to be there. I have had more than a few dives where I wished I could of stayed under for like another 6 hours or more it was that nice. Rainy season is kind of the hard part to dive in with all the creeks and rivers feeding into the Bay, but even with some of those days you can hit some nice spots.

We have clients that keep coming back to PV to dive time and time again. If you ever come down let me know, my Dad owns and operates his own shop down there and my older brother is about the best Dive Master I know. He may not be that most talkative but he will be able to accommodate any skill level and show you some pretty cool spots. I am down there two to three times a year, I plan on getting a Go Pro so I can start filming my dives and sharing them on YT.

Okay enough of me babbling on and on, take care.

Heading to Kauai in a few months, any recommendations? I'll check Tripadvisor and Yelp, but wondering if any of you have had any first hand experience diving in Kauai.

I've only done shore dives their. An old pier just north of the airport, was only, Okay, but did hear dolphins chatter and echo-sounding. A boat launch area off of Ho'onani road was much better. Their were quite a few different types of eels including Dragon Eel, very cool looking.

I just got certified this weekend, last dive was yesterday.. I was the only student in the class this weekend and just two of us in the pool. But there were a lot of people out on the lawn at San Carlos Beach suiting up in classes elsewhere.

Lemmie know if you're up to dive. I'm gonna be back on the 25th of June.
