The debate about gear rages on

Thanks, now I'm scared of running across a parking lot without gear on. :(

I recently started cycling (I've got a jacked-up hip, can't run any more)... I wear a bicycle helmet and gloves, but sometimes, when I'm picking up speed going downhill, I look at how fast the ground is going by, and I absolutely cringe at the idea of falling off... seriously, there has to be some better gear options than spandex shorts... :wtf particularly since I'm going to be moving to the clip-in pedals soon... I'm not graceful, and I know this is going to end poorly...
So nice to have that to look forward to... :nchantr

Its my knee so that's why I ride a bicycle for excercise, have for years. But I could never get used to clip-in pedals. Good luck, and after a few crashes, you may be going back.

I really don't think you need anymore coffee :rofl

^^^^Thinly veiled defensive post lacking any valid argument or point^^^^

You know if the comments of one party make the 2nd party feel the need to get defensive, then maybe the first party has a point. If not, then there would be no need to get defensive in the first place.

Just saying

Exactly what I was thinking! :thumbup

Please describe exactly how my choice makes yours more expensive.

For bonus points, justify YOUR choice to ride a motorcycle against this argument:

Your choice to ride a motorcycle--a far more dangerous vehicle than my car--makes my choice more expensive. Why should the 98% of us who DON'T ride motorcycles be forced to bear that cost?

I would like to see an intelligent answer to this as well.

Not holding my breath! :laughing

I'm sure there is a perfectly logical explanation but I'm still wondering how you "lowside at 15mph" Isn't that what everyone else refers to as "dropping it in a parking lot"?

So true! :laughing

I suppose the story sounds better when being told rather than I f'd up! :squid

My girlfriend had a minor concussion, and broken wrist from falling off a bicycle at 5mph...soooo.....:nchantr Any speed on any mobile vehicle, anything can happen.

A friend who was in his early 60's had not been on his bike for around 9 months due to cancer treatment. Excellent rider for something like 40 years.
Took safety seriously when riding, flying his beachcraft or boating off shore.
He was taking his bike about two miles down the road from his home in Ventura to have it gone over and make sure everything was still in order. His front calipers evidently were draging and heated up. When he let off the throttle the bike stopped abruptly and he went over. Hit his head on the curb hard enough to do significant damage to the helmet, broke his shoulder and a few ribs.

I'm not atgatt but yeh, it can happen.

My brothers use the clip-in pedals with the shoes, they make it seem pretty easy to snap on and off. So in the case of an emergency I can't see it being too big a deal unless your still getting use it. One of those things I think would become second nature.

And yea, I see some weekend cyclists go downhill pretty damn fast (easily 40mph+), if they were to fall, they would get very similar injuries to a motorcycle accident.

So I give props to our two-wheeled brothers who go riding at those speeds. You guys got some serious gonads to go that fast with only wicking gear and tiny wheels

Not defensive at all and I'm about the last person who would "Thinly Veil" anything. I pretty much say what I feel.

You simply went off on a rant at me and I was not going to participate. Thus I just made the coffee comment. You are already high strung enough to need more caffeine or maybe had too much already when you posted. I don't know. Either way I don't really care and was just making a joke to lighten the situation which of course you didn't get or maybe just didn't like being the butt of. Again, don't know or care.

Be safe.

Yep pretty simple to explain. Just got gas and went around behind the station in question to go out the side exit. There was a lane that went behind the station which is on my right with a parking lot to a strip mall on my left. As I came to the corner of the building (doing about 15mph or so) a truck came form the side of the building trying to cut across the parking lot. He was hugging the building on his left and I was on the road with the building on my right. So picture two people walking around a corner and meeting head on......same thing.

So when he popped out he was right on top of me. I could either Tbone him or slam on the brakes and lay the bike down. I will admit it was a panic situation as one minute all was cool and the exit to the main road was in sight then all of a sudden there was a truck less than 5ft in front of me. I'm not sure really if I laid the bike down or if the front washed out on gravel but the result was the same. It simply happened so damn quick that I barely registered the entire situation.

Simple enough. Lowside at 15mph or so. $3500 worth of damage to the bike +500 to replace my helmet. Witnessed and even his insurance company agreed he was at fault and thus paid.

Shit can happen. Even though looking back I did hold some responsibility and I surely could have prevented the situation if I had just slowed in anticipation of someone doing exactly what he did. However, I was focused on the exit and getting to work.

I gathered some people wear gear, some people don't, and there are various degrees of butt hurt in both camps at the other.

Anything new? 39 pages in. Can someone sum up any new points that have been made in this thread?

This^^

I was riding my bike down PCH a few years back and noted on a downhill I was doing 42 MPH. On a motorcycle, I'd be wearing ATG, but because I was on a bike, I was wearing what amounted to pantyhose and a styrofoam hat. I realized that if I biffed it, it would truly suck to be me.

As for the clip-ins, try SPD's - they allow for some lateral and twist movement, but keep you connected to the bike. Also, they're easy to get in and out of. FWIW, when I went to clip-ins, I find that I have more trouble getting into the clips than getting out..
