The debate about gear rages on

OK so let me see if I can sum up the last three months and 530 posts of this,

......for the TLDR crowd that want to just jump into the fray.

Gear is proven to reduce your injuries if you fail at the primary rubber-side-down mission.

It's your choice to wear gear or not. (except that which is mandated by Big Brother)

Those of us that do wear gear, would really prefer that you did too.

Your choice to not wear gear, makes my choice to ride more expensive. (but I'll choose that expense any way because I can afford it and I love to ride)

Us= gear wearers. You= Non gear wearers. (no particular BARFER is intended)

Except pretty much everyone chiming in on this thread has plenty of gear in the closet and sometimes choose not to wear the most protective solution, especially during the summer.

In my case that means the 'Stich stays in the closet during the summer and the armored leather jackets and kevlar jeans are chosen instead.

I'm guessing there are less than a handful of true "non gear wearers" on this thread.

Please describe exactly how my choice makes yours more expensive.

For bonus points, justify YOUR choice to ride a motorcycle against this argument:

Your choice to ride a motorcycle--a far more dangerous vehicle than my car--makes my choice more expensive. Why should the 98% of us who DON'T ride motorcycles be forced to bear that cost?

You know if the comments of one party make the 2nd party feel the need to get defensive, then maybe the first party has a point. If not, then there would be no need to get defensive in the first place.

Just saying

If you understand how your "Bonus Points" turn my being a motorcyclist into your burden as a motorist then you can describe exactly how your choice makes mine more expensive when it comes to gear.

I guess I should have been more specific. Riding a motorcycle with or without gear is irrelevant. So lets forget I said that part. So in our statistical sample lets forget about those who ride without gear.

Crashing is where gear and no gear matters. It's all speculation any way as real data is difficult to come by. I mean what is "dangerous"? Likely to Crash? Likely to be injured?

What it boils down to is if you don't want to pay the price then don't buy it. Cars, Bikes, Bicycle, Bus Pass. Everything has something negative applied to it by those without personal responsibility for their actions.

I agree with everything up until the expensive part. If your referring to insurance, your wrong. If your not, im clueless as to what your are referring to.

If your referring to insurance, your wrong.

That's what every one is talking about.

I was always under the impression that when an insurance company spends more money to operate by paying claims to repair bikes and ever more expensive hospital bills they pass those increased operating expenses on to every one.

Is that not how it works?

You would be partially correct in the reason rates go up. But incorrect in the collective cause. But I do give credit where due.

I never said it was the Sole reason for increased rates. Nobody thinks that. (Do they?)

Regardless, that's what tied this knot in the collective panties of us all. The tiny bit of the "socializing" of loss by insurance companies among their insured.

Car drivers use it us, so we in turn use it on the sub-sets of "us".

The point is:
It bumms me out when all the people don't share my values on everything. This is reason enough for me to bitch about it. But I'm over it, so you should be too.

Oh okay, well the tone of some of the people hear seemed to go that way. When its completely untrue. If anything, blame the people stealing our bikes for making insurance rates go up, as its a much bigger cause than personal crash/injury

The first statement is correct. Everything is related to everything. Nothing is in the empty. The question's answer is life is unfair.

all i know about gear is 34 years back NO leather would have prevented the crushed leg i received.

i knew nothing about let along the word "gear",
but my life was saved cause i wore a bucket on my head every time i got on the bike ( pre helmet law)
always had better than the norm of boots on no moto specific.
leather gloves, and jackets pending heat / cold temps.

now i gear up ride crazy at times. just out having fun. some say mid life crises, hay i am over 50 and got grey hair.
but if you want to be along on a ride with me... you had better plan right.
there is this saying
dress for the slide.
not the ride.

not to pump my nose in the air or anything like that. just I do not want to be picking up your parts and placing them in the black garbage bag.
or watching the FD hose you off the rd.
things do and will happen, what is wrong in planing to midagate them?

But learning how to be a better rider is the best one can do to never need the "gear".

think of GEAR as plan B.

.

Cheers to this thread and ones like it. Trust me it's not pointless. It can help push someone over the tipping point to get more/proper gear.

The many gear threads and debates were among the things that helped nudge me into adding a pair of Draggin jeans to my riding gear, followed by a roadcrafter not long afterwards. I still have the Draggins and never wear em cause the areostitch is a no brainer.

So, if you are out there and up to now only ride in regular jeans, PM me and I'll give you a free, lightly used, pair of Draggins (size 32/32) to send you along your merry gear way. Worked for me. Danke BARF.

Full disclosure: I was a squid once too. :twofinger

Should I ride in full gear in Alameda? 25mph an all.

I had a lowside in a parking lot doing maybe 15mph. I was lucky to have on all my gear as I had just got gas and was heading to work.

25mph is bike speed right? Hell Skateboards go faster than I was in my parking log instance.

The only issue is that at those speeds you are not likely to be separated from the bike. As in my case the bike fell on top of me. I was pinned under it and was very damn lucky I had on my boots as my foot was not in a pleasant location.

Simple parking lot accident. Not my fault, didn't see it coming. I limped away with a busted up knee and a really black and blue ankle that still gives me pain from time to time. The boots saved my foot/ankle from worse damage and the knee pads helped prevent my knee from being basketball sized vs. softball. Gloves of course saved my hands from any damage as did my jacket.

So the decision is yours but don't fool yourself into thinking 25mph is slow and nothing can happen. Bikes are heavy.

My girlfriend had a minor concussion, and broken wrist from falling off a bicycle at 5mph...soooo.....:nchantr Any speed on any mobile vehicle, anything can happen.

That is a really cool thing for you to do! Thanks for being the kind of person we need more of around here! :) :thumbup :applause

I dunno... how fast can you run- less than 25mph? If I give you $20, will you run across a parking lot without any gear... and jump on your knees? No? Well, there ya go! :p :thumbup

I recently started cycling (I've got a jacked-up hip, can't run any more)... I wear a bicycle helmet and gloves, but sometimes, when I'm picking up speed going downhill, I look at how fast the ground is going by, and I absolutely cringe at the idea of falling off... seriously, there has to be some better gear options than spandex shorts... :wtf particularly since I'm going to be moving to the clip-in pedals soon... I'm not graceful, and I know this is going to end poorly...
So nice to have that to look forward to... :nchantr
