The NHL Thread, 2012/2013 season

Yes Joe and Marleau will need to step it up for sure. but the whole team will need to play well. These Sharks will not last long if only one or two lines are contributing.

and I assume the reason Havlat skated at ~80% all year was that he was saving himself for the playoffs...well, now it's time. I expect him to play his guts out.

The defensmen will need to be solid in clearing those rebounds and helping Niemi out as much as possible.

There's not any real room for error with the Sharks. Even if they play well, it may not be enough.

Rangers v Capitals again, this is getting a little too common. It's still going to be a fun series though, it always is.

The other match ups I am really looking forward to are Bruins v Maple Leafs and the Kings v Blues those are going to be brutal (physical) and the winners are sure going to earn it the hard way :)

Was hoping Boston would lose yesterday's game just so we could all watch Bruins vs Leafs. I think it has potential to be the best series of the bunch. Shit gonna get cray cray

The big question for the Sharks is, as always, which Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau are going to show up in the playoffs. The superstars or the invisible men. In the last 14 games, Thornton has 0 goals and 5 assists and Marleau as 1 goal and 5 assists. Kinda tough to win with your two highest paid players playing like that.

Sharks management has to be patting themselves on the back for not biting on any trades for Couture. Without his play and without the positive turn of the Burns' experiment, we'd already be sunk. The Sharks need Thornton and Marleau to be a factor against Vancouver.

JT has been one of our best players in the playoffs over the past couple years. I feel like our shortcoming has always been the bottom 6, but this year's might be the best. Marleau, Pavelski, Torres on the third line; that's pretty ridiculous. Hopefully Gomez is feeling better. As much flak as he gets for not scoring, his passing ability is impressive. And the fact we have him for 700k on our 4th line LOL...outrageous. Galiardi is looking good too; showing signs of that pesky player we faced in the playoffs.

Regardless, I hope we stomp Vancouver. Go Sharks!

I agree and I'm a huge fan of his, but I've never seen a period in his entire career like the last half of this season, where he was almost invisible for extended periods. Watching Sharks games for the last month, I have to struggle to recall more than a couple of times either he or Marleau was even on the ice. Their combined production for the last month has been about equal to a single third line center. We need more from them to win. I'm hoping they both turn on the jets in the first round.

Good news for me is that I hate Vancouver more than I despise Raffi Torres, so I'm gonna get to pull for his this series. Hope he destroys somebody.

I think McLellan should throw the Pavs/Torres line out first, to basically shove it in the 'Nucks faces that Raffi's here, in teal, ready to do ill to you (but then he actually doesn't). Get them thinking about him and about what he can do (but won't, because he'll be playing in the rules).

There's an opportunity for Torres here. behave, play HARD, play fast and skilled, but stay away from the transgressions, and people can start rooting for you again (a la matt cooke).

If he gets suspended for something he does, even for the team and even if it's borderline, in this series, I'm not going to shed a single tear.

But McLellan shouldn't make any mistake: players mark his presence on the ice. this is an advantage that a coach must exploit.

Make the Nucks mark him. address his presence. then the other players should have a better path to success.

LETS GO SHARKS

Can only catch the game in small glimpses as I get ready for bed, no time to waste with the 0500 wake ups. Just glad to see Couture even things up, future Captain, and current Clutch all-star!

Pssh, I'm watching that shit CST and I gotta get up at 0700, no excuses :twofinger

great start. love seeing the team get rewarded for mucking it up in front of the crease. those are big time playoff goals there, from boyle and marleau. oh yeah, and couture's snipe wasn't all that bad either.

anyone think that if it was Torres who delivered the head-hit into the boards on Galiardi, he'd have received a match penalty and suspension? that non-call was curious at best. that's playoff hockey I guess.

Two things were evident last night. One, Vancouver is still the biggest collection of dirtbag, punks in the NHL and, two, the refs had their whistles so far down their throats all game that you have to wonder if there was a directive from on high to just 'let em play' in the first round of the playoffs.

I hate the Canucks and their fans so much, that I found myself cheering for Raffi Torres. My son thought I'd gone mad! I'm actually gonna be pissed if he doesn't board someone into the hospital this series.

Prediction: the Nucks tone done the cheap stuff next game and try to win with a more finesse/skill game that plays more to the Sedins.

Observation: The Sharks are way better and faster in breakout and transition with the lineup they have now than what they had before they made those trades. Shedding the concrete skate boys made a huge difference.

We're all friends here. It's okay, you can admit it; Raffi's converted you. If it makes you feel any better, he's converted Randy and Drew too. They were on his nuts all game last night! :laughing

^It doesn't take long to make a convert out of someone, when you see the other team taking liberties and you have a weapon to combat that at your disposal.

don't have to like the guy.

But I have to like that what he brings to the table is exactly what was in desperate need on SJ's roster.

Randy n Drew mentioned that VAN was very interested in re-aquiring him but lost out to the Sharks. could you imagine what game 1 would have looked like if Torres was with them, punishing our guys too? it would have been ugly.

but the last thing I want at this point is for him to get suspended. he's essential to SJ's success going forward in these playoffs.

No, he hasn't converted me and he never will. I've always recognized how good he was, both physically and as a 3rd/4th line winger, and I realize he adds value to the team and that he's a warrior. But I will never be a fan of his.

The perfect scenario for me would be for him to play great all series and then get suspended for the rest of the year after laying out Kesler with the same type of head shot he gave Hossa last year and then two handed slashing Burrows, Kassian, etc. on the way off the ice, with 5 minutes left in Game 7 of the series and the Sharks up 4 to 1 in the game. Would be worth it for the post-game rioting that would ensue alone.
