The NHL Thread, 2012/2013 season

Goon movie inspires the possibility of a NHL franchise being created for the Halifax market. Of course, this is all fan fare business; but the jersey concepts are pretty awesome.

ME Pickles signed on for a 5yrs/21M contract!!!!!!! Hell yea!!!!!
:banana

DW gives fair price to dmen. he don't mess around with the players he covets. good for him.

I'd rock one of those blue sweaters.

from the Merc:

There is "strong mutual interest" between the Sharks and Phoenix Coyote captain Shane Doan, according to the veteran forward's agent

Where in the hell would the Sharks get the cap room to sign Doan?

I think we have something like 5.5M left to sign 2 players. I think some people were speculating a Handzus buyout? Not sure if that's just fans hoping or if there's something more to that.

Doan was a 4.5M hit for Phoenix. I think the hope is he'll sign for something similar with San Jose? :dunno

If DW is able to lock up Doan, you'd best believe that either Clowe (but more likely Murray) will be on the way out.

I believe the buyout window has closed for the season. At least that's the deal in NHL 12 :laughing, buyout periods are the last five days of June leading to July 1 free agent day.

Doan's a free agent, so if we sign him we would have to trade Clowe or anyone else to someone willing to pick up about $4 million in salary without returning a contract of much of any value to us. I just don't see how the Sharks can make any free agent signing of any value work for us this year.

Doh. You're right about the buyout.

According to CapGeek, we have 5.57M left in cap space. If we can sign Doan for 4.5M, which is the amount he made in Phoenix, that would leave us with 1M left to sign a 4th liner. Possible? Maybe under ideal conditions. Likely? IMO, probably not.

Still a couple guys left in UFA: Semin, A Kostitsyn, Brunette, Moore, Winnik, etcetc.

For a team like the Sharks, with stars like Thorton, Marleau, Boyle, Burns, and a partial Havlat, we ranked 13th in G and 8th in GA. 30th in TSH (fewest PKs) but 7th in PPGA. 13th in PPO and 3rd in PPGs.

Seems like we need to a bit more depth in our 3rd line, especially considering they were probably the shittiest line all year last year.

Teemu has signed another 1-year contract with the Ducks worth 4.5M. Still kind of butt hurt that Teemu cost the Sharks so much in trade while performing mediocre, veoting a trade, and leaving in UFA. But you got to respect a guy, at the age of 42, who can still hang with the "kids."

honestly, I think Doan would be an asset. he'd give all he had and it's always good to pick up the old-good-guy-who-hasn't-got-a-cup.

But if instead, DW went for two speedsters I think that would be great too. SJ needs a few guys that will keep the opposing defense honest, that can break away and create fits for pinching dmen.

One of the big things that was a glaring weakness IMO on SJ last year: all their goals seemed to be hard-earned goals. As if they were working too hard for not enough results. A couple of speedsters could create space and perhaps some easy goals, easing the burden the top players have offensively.

but like I said, I'd take Doan and his heart just as well.
