The NHL Thread, 2012/2013 season

Weber offer sheet matched by NSH. Will become highest paid player for next few seasons, $14M salary.

As much as the assets that Columbus got back in the trade are not spectacular, you can't forget that they were able to shed that enormous contract. As good as Nash is, they were not getting $7.5 million in value out of him on the ice, he's not that young anymore and there are a lot of years left. So you have to figure there's value in getting out of that equation.

IMO, a team/market like Columbus is not going to be successful trying to build a team around one player with such a high percentage of their payroll in him. They have to build the way Nashville did, with depth, consistency and work ethic, and expect to do some rebuilding more often than the bigger market teams.

Given Howson's situation, there wasn't much he could do. Everyone knew Nash wanted out. Everyone knew Howson was desperate to make a trade. The NYR trade was probably the best deal Columbus could do. At least they have three first round picks for next year LOL. But, at the end of the day, Columbus fans deserve more and Howson needs to be canned.

The difference between Nashville and Columbus is that the Predators are a well run organization who are able to operate efficiently and effectively given the constraints of their budget from a small market. It's not a surprise the Predators are fan favorites. I'm glad Nashville matched Philly's offer for retaining Weber. It's a big fuck you to Philadelphia while reaffirming to their fans that they're committed to winning the cup.

I also read this morning that Weber's contract doesn't include a NTC/NMC and his agents are now trying to get the Predators to throw one in. Personally, I'd tell them to fuck off. You signed a ridiculous contract, that doesn't include a NTC, purposely structured to inhibit small market teams and you want us to throw in extra goodies for free? Fuck that noise.

And then there was one......Doan.

@EJHradek_NHL

Semin signing w/Canes makes sense. CAR very familiar with him from division rivalry. High skill guy. One year deal is very low risk. Smart

*snort* :laughing :cry :laughing

7M/1 year. Damn that is a lot of money! At least he knows it'll be a contract year :laughing 'Canes better hope he puts up more than his paltry 21 goals from last year.

Poor Logan. I feel his pain ! My Twitter got hacked a few months ago and it was a similar link. Thankfully I only had like twenty followers at the time so no one noticed. :laughing :laughing

Bettman threatening lockout:

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/8...e-commissioner-gary-bettman-updates-cba-talks

the owners don't have to lockout the players. if there's no agreement and the existing CBA expires, they could opt to do nothing and keep everything how they already set it up to be like.

basically he's saying the owners want to make more money by sharing the revenue generated by reducing player salaries.

gee, I wonder who made the offers to the players in the first place? ultimately, the owners did.

With this news, I'm now positive that at least for the last 2 years, owners have been operating under the assumption of reducing all the salaries they've been handing out to players. This would explain why the Coyotes were bought by the NHL and allowed to continue in Phoenix without ownership...I'd wager that the NHL already has a buyer, in which the sale is contingent on a new CBA with revenue-sharing, thus giving a team like the Coyotes extra cash at the end of the year.

yeah, F Bettman

This whole situation is pretty fucked. I hope there's no lockout, but really, I hope they get to the root of the issues.

I don't want to hear anymore about Mr. Superstar signing 20 year contracts, where he's set to make 50 million in his first two years, and 250 thousand in his last 10 years.

It'd be a real shame if the NHL locked-out, halting all momentum it's gained over the last 5 years. It'd be a bigger shame if they passed a compromised CBA that will fuck the league in the future.

Fuck Bettman. Commish with no.fucking clue. Lockout would.be the worst thing. All the fans gained would.be lost. Do they even care ?!?!? Gah !

this seals it. Chris Mason is officially my favorite goalie. top of his new mask for this year:
