The NHL Thread, 2012/2013 season

Just got the update now that I'm home from work. Things for NASH just went from bad, to worse. After losing Ryan Suter, their #2 dman (easily #1 on other teams), to the Wild; Shea Weber has signed a $100/14yrs offer sheet with the Flyers (the largest offer sheet in NHL history).

Options;
1) The Preds have 7 days to match the offer sheet.
2) Let Weber go to the Flyers, and receive as compensation; 2 first rds, 1 second rd, 1 third rd

I hate these long term contracts and I hope they're seriously limited in the upcoming CBA negotiations. Anything more than a 5 year signing is ridiculous.

Having said that, I think this is a no brainer for Nashville. Weber will be making 7.14M for 14 years vs Suter's 7.54M for 13 years. He's definitely worth more than 4 draft picks. Nashville is also 13.5M under the cap floor. If they don't resign Weber, they will end up over paying everyone else just to hit the cap floor. They're better off keeping the face of their franchise and rebuilding around him. Worst case, hold onto him for a year and use him as trait bait next year.

Contract breakdown;

12/13 - 15/16: $1M + $13M SB = $14M (Max Salary)
16/17 - 17/18: $4M + $8M SB = $12M
18/19 - 21/22: $6M
22/23: $3M
23/24 - 25/26: $1M

sb = signing bonus

Another peeve of mine, besides ridiculously long contracts, is a ridiculously long contract that is front loaded in an obvious attempt to keep under the cap.

Damn right.

:mad I want to personally thank Holmgren and the Flyer organization for pretty much guaranteeing a lock out next year.

One of the best run organization that is handcuffed by their market, get screwed in the ass by a big market team. Holmgren just made a lot of enemies.

Folks, we have a trade...........

@DarrenDreger Dubinsky, Anisimov, Erixon and a 1st for Rick Nash.

Howson shit the bed. Dubinsky is slight above average, Anisimov is an underachiever, Erixson is unproven, and the 1st will be 20-30th position.

This after that no talent ass clown (thank you Office Space) Howson demanded Couture from SJS and Skinner from CAR.

Wow, if I was a Columbus fan I'd be pissed. No wonder they continue to lose fans.

More people will be in the arena for all star weekend than for the months prior to the asg. :laughing

Agreed. I can't imagine what Columbus fans must be going through; hopefully for their sake this joke of a trade gets him fired. Meanwhile, the rest of the Central Division breathes a little easier.
