The Official 2012 NFL Thread

Hey Harbaugh, I see Vernon Davis got a concussion, did you fire him yet?

"Happy Birthday Jim Harbaugh from the 49ers"

49ers played so bad last night, it literally broke my ESPN NFL Gamecast window at one point

The hit on Davis was text book. Lead with your shoulder and hit to seperate the ball. The hit on manningham wasn't dirty at all in my opinion.

Look like two normal NFL tackles to me. All the guy did was wrap up Manningham's legs, same technique is taught to 6-year-old Pop Warner kids.

I don't understand the receiver hits rules. The D has to allow the receiver to catch the ball, count 2 mississippi, then hit? It's too strange to understand. Davis caught the ball, no helmet to helmet, just mano vs mano. And yet here came the flag....and the smelling salts.

Tackling the legs is one thing. Tackling the legs while another defender is holding up the guy and he can't defend himself is different.

People always get bent when hit by two people at the same time, hope Manningham is ok. Didn't see any intent to injure though, like the dreaded helmet to the knee.

Got to hype Ryan Tannehill some more, he has really shook off the rookie jitters and is having a strong finish to the year.

Last five games have included matchups against three playoff teams Seattle, New England and San Francisco, and yet his stats are still improving: 7 TD's, 91 QB rating average, over 130 yards rushing (!), and my favorite part...only one interception. :thumbup

Next week coulda been a Fins playoff spot battle vs New England, but not anymore since the Bengals won to clinch the final spot, congrats to them. Kinda weird to have the AFC playoff teams already decided and there's still a week to go. :wtf

It's funny, two telecasts yesterday did Rookie QB comparisons.

Each one listed the top 3 Rookie QBs:
Russell Wilson
RG3
Andrew Luck

Neither channel/telecast mentioned Tannehill.

I'm with you man, ain't it funny how the media cares about ratings only? :p

Tannehill has more passing yards than Wilson.
Tannehill has a better passer rating than Luck.
Tannehill has more pass completions than RGIII.

Those three are on playoff teams so they deservedly get more media play. Meanwhile the forgotten rook is quietly playing rather well lately.

Tannehill just had his best game as a pro last week vs Jacksonville. Let's see how some other QB's have rated against Jacksonville this year:

2012 QB ratings vs Jacksonville:
Ryan Tannehill: 123
Tom Brady: 73
Aaron Rodgers: 95
Andy Dalton: 96
Andrew Luck: 75 & 80

:teeth

Can the Giants suck any more in this game?! I just needed them to play one more great game today. They're gonna end up giving up like 70 points thesse past two weeks on a row.

Close. We're like 64-14 for the last two games. Fell right out of the playoffs. Honestly though, I can't say I'm mad. This is the kind of end of year disappointment I was hoping for at the beginning of the season for the chip on our shoulder I want next year.

No mad? Only two Super Bowl wins every 5 years, and you're not mad at your slacker team? ;)

Passing yards has to be the most overrated stat for a QB. Drew Brees and Matt Stafford lead the league in total passing yards and neither team is going to the play offs. Touchdown passes, completion percentage, yards per pass and interceptions are the true measuring stick for a QB.

And leading the team to a victory is kinda important too. :p

Which Tannehill did two extra times this year then the MF'in FG kicker choked both times. We should be 9-6 right now, getting ready for the wildcard game. :x

No doubt. I think Tannehill is having an ok year. You'd like to see a guy toss more than 14 tds by week 16 but assume that may be more of a team issue. I hope you guys rough up New England this week, I think it's most likely that the Bengals have to face them in the first round.

Tannehill has stunk it up mightily in four games. Then played either average or above average in the rest. Way better than I expected when they drafted the guy, I'll take it.

Strangely, the Fins often get destroyed by the Pats in Miami, then play them tough in Foxboro. Weird. Looks like the Pats are nothing but a wildcard round team this year as the Broncos and Texans are winnin' mo' games.

Manningham out indefinitely. ACL and PCL both torn.

fuck.

Yes horrible news. But they do have that rookie 1st-rd pick waiting in the wings....

For Raiders fans, Carson Palmer's busted ribs and lung injury will keep him out of the final game. Finally some Terrelle Pryor time?

Manningham has been one of the more consistent targets this year, though.

Sucks that his season gets taken away on a dirty ass hit like that.

sucks that he got hurt, but you're the only one who seems to think the tackle was dirty. No penalty, no fine, no complaints from the coach or players or commentators.

Doesn't need to be a fine or penalty to be a crappy hit. And others agree. The first page I looked said the following, from Mike Sando @ ESPN.
What I didn't like: ...
Later in the game, the 49res lost Manningham after Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill hit Manningham low. Years ago, that type of hit might have sparked a brawl. But with current rules discouraging players from hitting high, that type of play could become more common.

And I don't even like the guy. Between he and Tyree's "miracle" catches, they've rooned two Superbowls for me.

The key words being "years ago". When you could go head hunting, which was totally acceptable, no one went low. It wasnt acceptable. Now, you cant hit high. Even if you lead with the shoulder you could get a flag. As a result, hits to the knees, whether another is already wrapping up the player or not, is just not unacceptable anymore. The refs didnt call it in that game, nor did they call it on the Bengals when Big Ben was sacked from top and bottom in Sundays game in Pittsburgh. He ended up limping off the field. No crying from the commentators, no flag, no panties in a bunch. There was certainly no malice in either tackle. It's 2012 football. Move on.
