The Official 2016/2017 NFL Thread

Caught a Few Raider highlights. They look fast, very fast.

Fast is the rook WR/kick returner the Fins drafted, who ran a reported 4.1 in the 40. He's only 5'6, 165 lbs though. Can you imagine being 165 with a 330-lb man tackling you? :wtf

Rook had like 200 yards vs the Giants last night, but unfortunately has cracked ribs already, from arm tackles. Be fast, little guy. But never, ever take a hit. Fall down or get out of bounds!

...Kaep not even playing...

This isn't good. He's not even doing a normal amount of throwing, he's splitting it 50/50 with Blaine...and still with a half-workload Kaep's arm is too sore to play?

Considering that he really isn't a "great" QB I don't exactly count it as a loss. I mean how much does the offense lose by not having him on the field? Would he have completed more than YGG?

Guys guys. Kap was playing. Didn't you see? He was just wearing a jersey with "Lewis" on it for some reason.

decent play by the Raiders. The secondary seemed in much better shape than this time last year, which is good news with all the new players. I saw some good blocks by the o-line, but the ARZ defense was pretty damned stout as well. They did show that their depth has improved. Wasn't happy about Cooper's performance. I expected his awareness as to where out of bounds is to be much better.

ARZ looks fucking legit! they had very good balance on offense. And as typical for Palmer, he is lights out between the 20s, but get him in the red zone and he just can't seem to make it happen. They looked very much like a contender.

True. But it won't matter unless he can throw accurately. Same goes for all NFL QB. Defenses are just too fast.

Some of the things the announcers were saying got me to thinking about the hurry-up offense. Does it seem like it's kind of a dumbing down of the game? Not in the sense that implementation is simplistic. But it seems to reduce complexity by limiting substitution. And that goes for both the O and D.

Limiting offensive complexity means it's easier to figure out what's going to happen in any given formation. Or at least limits the number of options that a defense has to plan for. It does a great job of forcing teams to be in shape though.

Guys.

The Niners put up 300 yards of offense in the 1st half. They went for it on a 4th and 1 in the 1st Quarter.

Last year they would have punted. On 3rd down.

Say what you want, but Kelly's offense will be way more interesting than dive/dive/checkdown/punt last year.

The defenses are so fast, the QB has like 2.4 seconds to do something, or get crushed. That's why QB is such a primo position.

The new head coach for the Dolphins said the NFL is now a Dink N Dunk leaguet:

The d-ends are too good. If you want to stand back there and have your quarterbacks get your brains beat out, go at it.

Of all the new players, who is most impressive?

sean smith stood out the most. he looked quick and effortless. though it was just like you said: on one play he jumped a route intended for Fitzgerald, had it in his hands with a sure pick-6, and then dropped it. maybe he should work on batting it to a teammate, haha.

I would say that any great offense that can stay in the hurry-up has to be able to have multiple formations based on the same personnel, so I dont see it as dumbing down offensively. An offense that cant run the hurry-up offense well is most likely not using multiple formations out of the one set and therefore becomes predictable. P Manning and Roethlisberger run (or ran) very effective hurry up based on the multiple looks they give with the same personnel.

I have to say that's the bit that's always impressive about Chip Kelly's game plan. Puts up staggering yardage stats.

Also sounded like ADavis may get moved to guard leaving Brown at tackle. The o-line should be able to handle any front in the league if they can stay healthy.

But that's exactly what I've been saying. GO GO GO GO, play after play, the opposing defense is begging for an oxygen mask.

When he was with the Fins there was some guy on a fan site who was tracking how many INT's Smith dropped.

He's a good DB though, just plain HUGE compared to most DB's. I wonder if he's ever had to cover Julio Jones of the Falcons? That would be a good matchup of giant DB vs giant WR.

September 18, in Oakland.

September 18, in Oaklamd.

That should be a hell of a game of fringe teams on the rise trying to prove they are contenders. I also hear that the Raiders have sold out on Season Ticket holders for the first time since EVER. These poor bastards have been waiting for that terrible owner to die for so damn long so they could build a decent team. Oaklamd is going to be in a frenzy as they start winning this year for the first time since like back in Grandpa's day. :laughing

They will have come out like gang busters, though, as the schedule is rather unforgiving with travel, especially to the eastern time zone. They open in NOLA, then have back to back games on the road in Tenn & Baltimore, then home for 2 weeks followed by back to back games in Florida. Those eastern time zone games have been brutal in the past, but lately, any time zone has been brutal to the Raiders.

After the bye they play the Texans in Mexico City...
