The Official 2016/2017 NFL Thread

Here's the best part: From 1999-2013, out of all the players picked in the top 5 (75 total), there would have been ONE that offset language applied to.

The Chargers are willing to lose a top 3 pick over something that's happened one time in 15 years. That's amazing.

you know there's the flip side to that - Bosa is willing to play chicken over something that's happened 1x in 15 years.....

Bosa may be able to afford to sit out a year, but he wont get picked in the top 5 next year, maybe not top 15, so he's not going to see that money ever, unless he plays lights out and earns a huge second contract. I dont care who is "right or wrong" or really think that applies here. SD has the right to offer their draft picks anything they want, and said draft pick can sign or not. *....snip....*
yup. the opportunity cost for Bosa to sit out a year is huge.

say he gets drafted 10-15 next year. his bracket maxes out several million less than the 85% he's turning his nose up at. and it's not like he shouldn't get the $.... just has to wait until next year. ffs.... enjoy your millions...

it's dumb. agent should be kicked to the curb.

#4 Ezekiel Elliott, who will actually have a huge impact on his team in 2016, deferred.

#3 Bosa, now utterly useless for his team in 2016, did not.

Good luck, Bosa. You'll cave in and sign, rather soon, and we'll laugh at you. The Chargers are right, you are wrong.

This. Hella 100%.

Well yea, at this point it's the principal. SD aren't negotiating in good faith.

Like I said, if they didn't want to pay a #3 overall pick the standard contract agreed by the CBA, trade down from the pick or win more games.

All this situation will do is fuck over SD in the future, because more players will realize they pull shit like this and refuse to sign if they're drafted. Free agents aren't gonna be likely to go there either.

shouldn't that be the other way around? Bosa's asking for more, SD is offering less?

To find a holdout longer than Bosa’s, you’d have to go back to the 2009 season, when then-rookie Michael Crabtree missed the entire preseason and part of the regular season before finally signing with the 49ers on Oct. 7.

Damn I forgot about that guy's holdout.

I heard the REAL reason for Bosa's holdout on a getting that last 15% of his signing bonus this year is because he's doesn't want to pay taxes in California in 2017. He apparently resides in Florida which has no state income tax. If he gets 100% of his signing bonus this calendar year, he won't have to pay state income tax on it.

Come on cheap-ass Bosa, you could've had 85% of your $17 Million signing bonus this year with the remaining 15% paid in March 2017, and we need better roads in California. Man up and pay your 2017 taxes. :laughing

holy. it wouldn't even be taxes on the full 17. 15% is 2.55 million that he'd be paying taxes on.

well i guess 38% (?) of 2.55 million is quite a bit of coin, almost 970k, to give up.

That makes sense, fuck those taxes, but I wonder if he can't maintain a Florida Residency for the additional year?

Doesn't matter, you still have to pay taxes for the state you earned the money in, which would be California.

again, that has nothing to do with the situation, which is SD offering Bosa less than what the standard contract is for where they drafted him. They are trying to strongarm him and he's perfectly in the right to tell them to fuck off.

Romo sacked, Romo hurt, in the 1st quarter of preseason game #3. Dayum!

WAT? Chargers offered Bosa every cent he deserves as the #3 pick, yet Bosa turned it down. Or prolly his greedy-ass agent turned it down not him. Which seems incomprehensible as the CBA sets the guidelines for the contract. There's nothing to negotiate. Except...Bosa's agent is trying to negotiate! :wtf

The Chargers made an offer, then upped their offer, then upped their offer again...stonewalled by Bosa's agent every time.

Bosa could've had 85% of his signing bonus this year, and the remainder in March 2017. The entire signing bonus, as per the CBA rules. That's a cool $17 Million into his bank account between now and 7 months from now. Bosa's agent said no. So weird. You can't wait 7 months to help your team that is maxed out for the calendar year after signing Rivers for $83 Million? (which appears to be San Diego's issue, they are hurting for money to close out 2016).

Bosa a rookie 4-3 DE from Ohio State trying to learn a new position in the 3-4 Chargers defense. He is basically worthless for 2016 at this point as he's missed the entire training camp.

You keep saying the same thing over and over again. Do you not understand?

Top draft picks get one of two things -- 100% of the signing bonus up front OR offset language removed from the contract.

San Diego offered neither. You keep saying they offered 85% -- that's less than what they should have offered. It's not hard to understand that. Also, they didn't even offer 85% until just recently, but still aren't removing offset from the deal.

They are still offering him less than they should be based on where he was drafted. The NFLPA agrees and is backing him as well.

You are totally buying the propaganda the Chargers are putting out.

The funny thing is the Chargers are only hurting themselves in this whole situation. Other free agents and future draftees will see the shit that they try to pull and be less likely to play for them.

Quote the section of the CBA that backs up what you just said. I'll give you some time to research your mistake. :laughing

:facepalm

The CBA set the contract length and value. There are only 2 things to negotiate. Offset language and bonus payment deferral. The Chargers are offering neither.

I don't know why it's so hard for you to comprehend that

Wentz signed with Philly a contract that does NOT include 100% of his guaranteed bonus money this year, AND it DOES include off set language. Wentz was willing to let 6% of his bonus guarantee come in January of 17. Bosa turned down an offer that gives him everything but 15% of the bonus in 16.

Sounds like the Romo thing was no big deal though.

Bah, the kid is getting rich, he needs to sit down, shut the fuck up, and recognize who is in charge here. Players are expendable and management makes the rules. This fucking stupid puke could be having daily treasure baths while he was preparing to contribute for his team. Instead he is holding out and throwing millions down the toilet on a matter of principle, and failed principles at that. Let him sit his whole rookie year and not get any money, good for him. It isn't like the Chargers were a threat to anybody anyway. :laughing
