The Official 2017/2018 NFL Thread

Niners are trading a 2018 2nd rounder to NE for Garoppolo WTF

Possibly a good trade. They’ll have a real chance to evaluate Garrafolo, and can decide to pay him or not. He won’t go for top tier bucks unless he really lights it up, which is unlikely.

SF still will have a chance to get a top pick in the draft. It’s hard to see any victories in the schedule. Maybe the Cardinals.

2 things.

1) They can always just use the franchise tag on him next year for 22M or whatever it's gonna be. They essentially spent a 2nd round draft pick they got for free on a 1.5 season evaluation of Garoppolo -- if they spend a 2nd round pick next year on Luke Falk or Baker Mayfield or Jake Browning, it's not a big deal. May as well spend it on a guy that's at least got SOME tape on him in the NFL.

2) 0-8 aside, there are worse places to be than SF for a young QB. They've got a young defense, a fucking TON of salary cap room to pay FAs and to pay a QB, high picks in the draft, etc. I personally subscribe to the idea that the QB is the last thing you add to a team so you don't end up with David Carr, BUT, getting Jimmy G and then building around him with a few big dollar OLine guys and some solid draft picks a la Raiders w/ Derek Carr is a decent way to build an offense too.

I just look at how smart the Patriots are. The Steelers used to fill the secondary market with linebackers but the Patriots have made the hall of fame on selling backup quarterbacks and coaches. :laughing

Patriots had to choose Brady or Garoppolo for next year, they weren't going to be able to afford to pay both

this is an awful trade.
  • Garrapollo is a UFA after this season (8 weeks...)
  • there has never been a backup QB from NE who succeeded elsewhere
  • Niners just made a "win now" trade on an 0-8 team.....

Agreed. I have seen Garroppolo as the second coming of Matt Cassell. The Niners are all set to take a top 3 pick in next years hella QB rich Draft. They will be like what, pick #36 with their #2 pick? That is a WR or DE who contributes their rookie year.

The trade makes no sense to me unless Jimmy G is the franchise guy, but I guess they feel he might be the one and maybe buy him the top WR in the draft and maybe a new Tackle with the #1 pick?

My question is whether they play him and have him get slaughtered due to their diminished o-line....or what....he ain't the QB of the future if they play him now, just another IR candidate...

That's exactly what Shanahan said. Didn't love any of the QBs coming out this year (I still think Rosen is legit) and thinks JG is a long term guy.

Apparently NE tried to keep him and pay him starter money to sit behind Brady, but he turned it down because he wanted playing time.

If he's the real thing he will beat people with his arm and will force teams to respect it. Right now no one worries about the 9ers beating them through the air so coverage can be traded for pressure. Having a one dimension offense makes it easier on defenses.

I have not been impressed by Rosen in the clips I've seen. Maybe he has what it takes and needs development. I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe he does.

Giving up our top #2 draft spot for Garapallo seems like a waste of time and draft capital to me. I'd love to be wrong about it. The one thing it's sure to do is give the coaches an opportunity to pull the team back together for at least another 4 games or so.

Ajayi to the Iggles for a 4th round pick. Where's Zerox? Wonder how he feels about his team being dismantled (apparently they're shopping Jarvis Landry as well)?

I think they have (2) 2nd round picks...I think this was a good trade. Upgrade from what they had...

the only positive i can pull from this is he's not a rookie. he's got 2.5 years of NFL seasoning under his belt. that's it.

the Niners gave away *their* 2018 second Rnd pick, which is likely to be a top 5. top 5 picks in the second round are the most valuable picks in the entire draft from a cost/value/performance perspective

the other second Rnd pick Niners have is from the 5-2, division leading Saints. that one will be lucky if it's mid-20's, more likely to be high 20's

since NE needs a LB i would have liked to see Dumervil or Lynch packaged with the Saints pick instead but whatever. rumor has it the Pats wanted a 1st or two 2nds for Jimmy G :wow

So if SF had used the 2nd round pick to draft a QB instead of trading for Jimmy G would that have been OK?

That was a negotiating ploy only; given they are the ones who would have ahd to make a move I would have like to have seen only our conditional #2 go to them. Forget giving anything else. Garapallo will be an FA at the end of the year. Could have picked him up at cost then if he really is a franchise guy rather than spending draft value on him.

It was a gamble by Shanahan and Lynch. Maybe their inexperience got the better of them this time. Maybe not. We'll see in the next few weeks or so.

Oh and BTW, here's further proof that the Niners aren't even close to the worst organization in football:

I got several emails last night that the coaching staff for Browns is HIGHLY upset at the front office. Coaches were in the building working, and the front office went home at 5 PM. While coaches continued to work the night before the trade deadline, Sashi Brown was unaware of the Jimmy G trade and was actually informed of it by an irate coaching staff who had lobbied to acquire him, over an hour after it happened.

Coaching staff feels that the front office is undercutting them by not acquiring the talent they need to win, and not putting in matching effort to do so. Like anything, there's three sides to the story (his, hers and the truth) but this was relayed to me last night.

Hey, I still like Shanahan and Lynch. I believe. So much better than Bad News Baalke. I know, the record doesn't show it, but they are sentient and well-informed. It will get better, I think.

They're still cleaning house. Just traded Rashard Robinson to the Jets and released Will Redmond.

It's like they wanna get rid of almost everything Baalke touched lol.

re pick - ostensibly it would have been QB in the first and then position of need here. or flip this pick for another 1st rounder in 2019. but what do i know, i'm just a schmuck prognosticating on someone elses work while avoiding my own :laughing

re: Browns dysfunction :wtf:wtf:wtf

to be fair i don't see the Niners as dysfunctional anymore. they're just ineffective.

Eh, they had 5 crazy close losses and then got dismantled by 2 of the best teams in the NFC. It's gonna take more than one offseason to turn around a team that was as bad as they were last year.

Going back 5 years, the top 5 picks in the 2nd round to make the Pro Bowl consists of Landon Collins and Derek Carr. There are a few decent players in there, there are also some scrubs. It will remain to be seen if Jimmy G. pans out but I think this is a deal you make every day of the week. I'm sure the Jaguars would have...

I wonder if it was a slight 'F You' by Belichick to the Browns...could be still bitter LOL.

...aaaaand the Browns apparently had a trade for AJ Mccarron but while they were celebrating they didn't submit it to the league in time, so no deal.

LOL

The story I heard is the FO went out for lunch promptly at noon so the paperwork didn't get filed until it was too late.
