Thoughts on SUV?

I'd have to agree with Freddo.

Two kids are easier (in my experience)-they play together.

Mine are months away from being 7 and 4. We are in the mother of all sweet spots. No diapers, they can dress themselves, feed themselves And they play together. Seriously it's rad. One attached to your hip forever is harder.

I've always loved the Jeep Grand Cherokee

I've owned 2 myself.

Wife is interested in getting 1. We went and test drove the Hemi V8 Overland Summit at the Jeep dealer on Stevens Creek. I've heard the V6s weren't up to snuff in the last few years.

We REALLY liked it but completely hated the dealer experience so we bailed. Stop trying to upsell me and sell me what I want. Give me numbers and stop trying to play around with APRs and trade-in value BS to "get me into a better vehicle"

Now it gives me time to do some research and ASK YOU

What SUV would you get - 2015 under $40k

what say you?

I asked for 3 numbers when I walked in the dealer. Trade In value on her car, msrp on the V8 limited and the V8 Hemi. That's all the info I need to make my decision... I don't want you running my credit to see what loan I can get (I don't need it). I don't want you trying to stretch the loan out to 72 months to up me into the next vehicle.

As others said Jeeps have never had a good reputation. Brand new they always look and feel nice, until stuff starts falling apart, breaking down, chassis starts to squeak, electrical fails. The new cherokees are just pretending to be all fancy thinking it could compete with BMW X5's, Range Rover Sports, Mercedes ML's and the like for much less $$.

Personally I'd overlook the 'plastic' feel of the Japanese SUV's like the Pilot and the 4Runner. Fully loaded they are quite nice interiors also, but will likely be more than $40k. I had a '04 4Runner for 7 yrs and I drove the piss out of it. I'd definitely get another one in the future.

If you want something more refined then consider the Honda Pilot. I don't like how the current ones look but they sure are a smooth quiet ride.

As for walking into a dealership, well you're doing it wrong. Only suckers walk into a dealership to 'shop and buy'. Smart buyers don't haggle. They know what they are willing to pay, email dealers in the area with either their OTF offer, or ask for their best OTD offer. Always deal in OTD price.

Why trade in her current car when you should sell it privately for more cash? Is it a tough to sell car? If so then know what you can realistically expect for it, the used car market is hot right now and dealers are willing to pay top dollar for trade-ins, but of course they will try low balling you. The internet sales guys for dealerships operate more on volume than per sale commission.

If you walk in, test drive, ask for prices, of course you're gonna get the full on sales tactics. They think they can close you, and if they don't its not their fault, its that they think you're a bitch that came in to pull their leg going for a joyride and they hate you for that. They'll be super nice to you throughout the process up until they see you're really not agreeing to their terms or buying then they won't even so much as shake your hand or look you in the eye as you leave. That's what happened right? Haha, I know this shit all too well.

3 rows of seating has her turned off

but her friend loves hers

maybe I can talk her into a test drive

one of the concerns is lifting a baby seat into the rear, she's 5'6" so it helps some.

The Jeep Overland had the electronic lowering suspension in Park so it was a non-issue

I have a shark in my pocket if I need to go into a price battle, but I want easy peasy and Costco sounds like the way to go.

3rd row folds down, out of site and more flat cargo in the back.

A buddy just bought a new jeep grand and he posted on a pic on his insta with it on the back of a flatbed tow truck. Guess the transmission blew up. Not good.

Also, the Jeep's are generally pretty solid from what I have seen (few relatives love them), but they are GAS guzzlers!! Obviously you are looking at a HEMI so that's prob not a concern, but worth mentioning.

I would get either a Nissan or Toyota (Lexus GX for me specifically) personally. I have heard nothing but good things about the Pilot too. However, my wife didn't like any of those.

We were looking at buying the Ford Explorer Sport. That thing was decked out with options and the turbo v6 drives like a V8. I thought it was awesome for about $45k, but that blows your budget up. The Tahoe LT was too big for her, and about $53k or something, so too expensive as well.

The 8HP70 is the transmission in the JGC V8 which is identical to the 7 series, the x5, the Phantom and the Quattroporte

DO NOT BUY A V6

Sounds like you have been doing your research plenty. WHy are you asking us? :p

working in this industry there really is no difference between the manufactures regarding breakdowns.

its all about the money you'd like to spend. Go for German if you need a super sporty SUV which capabilities you most likely never explore. High quality parts and over engineered but you pay for it.

Id personally go for a Ford Explorer Ecoboost (Great Engine Transmission combo) or little bigger GMC/Chevy Tahoe body on Frame.

Frankly any SUV you choose will have horrible Gas Milage with the driving you going to do. Doesn't really matter what SUV JGC, X5, etc...

Yep, the american car companies sweet spot is trucks and SUV's. Japan does a good job, but not entirely sold on the German SUV's really.

I didn't test drive the ecoboost (that's a 4 cyl turbo, yea?). But really liked the sport with the v6 turbo, felt like a v8. Fast, torque was on demand. Very well set up. Would like to see how it goes long term.

talking V6 Turbo. is also called Ecoboost. its their branding for turbocharged engines.

German SUV are great, the problem is they are build to compete with the sport sedans in Europe and therefore everything is setup for sportiness. (Engine, Transmission and first the Suspension Setup is not really made for our style of driving)

I have a Ford Expedition and actual love it for what it is. i don't expect to break gas milage records, but that was never the question.

:laughing - just making sure there is not an angle that I am missing ;)

What ever makes her happy is what you do! :thumbup

this - at the end of the day this. She's tossing between the smart economical choice (the accord) and the "splurge" choice. She's never owned a "nice" car before so it weigh on her pretty heavy.

I vote for the new Ford Explorer. Super nice interior for the money and looks like a range rover. lol

I voted for it too but got denied.

I think Ford calls all their turbo engines Ecoboost. They have at least one I4 and I think a couple V6s.

I pitched it to her, she said no :laughing

we will test drive the RDX and she then has to make the decision.

So right now it's JGC, RDX, Accord :wtf

I work for a dealer. So if you wanna test drive the RDX, I'll be happy to set you up with my best salesperson to help you out.
