I'm onboard with this post (Here's to you, Art Modell), including the ironic shift of the team while the gentrification of Oaklamd continues. That said, there are still deeper pockets in SFO right now, and so they're going while the going is hot. Had Curry/Klay not pulled the 'ship off, they probably wouldn't have moved. But Curry sells, and they're asking top dollar.
At the end of the day, we need to remember that modern sports teams hardly have loyal hometown competitors playing on their behalf; Lebron is a rare exception, you know? Wade can make a similar argument, too, having gone back to Chicago.
Ultimately, it's all about the money. Loyalty to a home team is absurd, given that most players are free agents from all over the country. And yet we care, and those in power take advantage of that irrational loyalty to increase the size of their wallet... and when that wallet isn't fat enough, changes get made. Sucks, but us fans are suckers for it all the same.
That's what was kinda funny about the latest Jeddy York interview when he pointed out he couldn't be fired, etc. Of course the bottom line is its HIS team, godammit.
You are absolutely right about loyalty, about owners, etc. Those of us who follow either BA football team have learned about how loyal owners are to us. And that's not even with the ever-changing roster aspect!
All we ask is that they retain the hazy delusion that we fans count. I have to say that Seattle Seahawks has done a good job with that. Only Green Bay, and other sport teams, like Seattle Sounders and Barcelona FC have some kind of municipal ownership deals that translate to some level of actual ownership. Otherwise its the moguls club.
Welts appealed to that describing the new Center, saying that, while there would be 1,500 less seats, that they were eliminating a second bunch of luxury boxes whatever (which is only logical since big-shots sit on court anyway, so not much of a Milkbone). He emphasized that they were trying to recreate the Oracle feel and sound. Which made me chuckle, because it's "like Oakland, but without the Oakland part," which as I pointed out, is gentrifying anyway, so why run away?
I actually have favorable feelings toward the ownership despite a kind of LA angle (Guber, etc). Look at why. Damn. They have given us a good team, found a great and friendly coach who is as California as they come albeit LoCal. They really feel like a California joint. Unlike Jeddy, I don't think they will let the team wither once they get the new playground.
THe ultimate insider native view, to this ultimate insider native, is that we don't have to aspire to be San Francisco. We know who we are, we know who the Warriors are and its almost an inverse philosophy to go out of our way NOT to name them to our most famous local town. Because thinking it adds cachet is just not cool....(Hey, I don't even wear all-black clothes and hang in the cafes with this snobbery)...It's sorta like the local thing to go out of your way NOT to acknowledge celebrities and such...
And by contrast, York hangs ONTO the San Francisco name even while he's moved away. In case we forget who the 49ers are. Because York is all about Fisherman's Wharf, the hearty gold miners, etc etc. Right. It is different, but this is the opportunity for Dubs owners to distinguish themselves. I hope they don't squander it.
Good ol Lattrell. We are in the Golden State, it's our state nickname etc etc.
