When should I apply for CHP?

They never asked me about any parking violations during my BI with sfpd. Departments don't really care if you forgot to put an extra quarter that one time, it doesn't say anything bad or good about you. Movers on the other hand can show important qualities of lack there of: speeding, no insurance, no registration/expired, dui, reckless driving... is what they are interested in.

Failure to pay parking tickets can be reported to DMV....will you know if your BI knows that you have a ton of past parking tickets? If you are up front, and disclose these things, usually ok. If you omit things, then stand by to stand by.

Ok I should've clarified that they don't care about paid parking tickets.

You can get a felony for any number of reasons, do a little research.

They, the BI, wants you to list everything. It does not matter if you think it is too small or trivial. If you got parking tickets list them, paid or not.

They told us at the PAT not to put down parking viloations. Only traffic citations and arrest. Though Im sure if someone has alot of unpaid parking tickets, that will come up in the BI.
Like Rel said though, no matter is too small. 100% honesty. Let them decide if its important or not.

Next question: what's the CHP's policy on tattoos? I don't have one yet, but I'm planning on getting one. The one I plan to get is not gang related or offensive in any way, but I'll wait if it might make the process more difficult than needed.

Have you actually spoken to a recruiter?

Tattoos are allowed, however they have to be covered up, should you be so fortunate to actually pass the academy and make it to the road. Additionally, they have to be covered while at the academy.

No problem :thumbup

One word of advice, dont post unless you have tried all you can to search for answers. Better yet to PM someone. They dont allow hiring questions and are very strict with their rules. I dont post at all, just read only, because you can easliy start to stand out. You dont want any extra attention , especially if you make it through the process.

Well I watched the video and the guy still has the tattoos. Care to explain since you work for the department.

i wont comment on the video because i have not seen it. but Rel speaks the truth, it is policy that all tattoos must be covered.

It just makes no sense to me. You have someone who works for the CHP that says no tattoos visible. Then you have this video from the CHP with a guy with a full sleeve tattoo.

So if you have tattoos and are accepted in to the academy is it long sleeve shirts for you everyday?

First of all, if you want to work for this department, you need to learn this: It doesnt matter if it makes sense to you or not.

Perhaps the video was produced before the policy was changed?

I'm sure that you've seen videos of people riding motorcycles without helmets. Guess what, you're required to wear helmets now.

If you were to get hired, and were to get to break in, your FTO would not like to have to explain himself/herself to you after they've told you what the policy is.

As for your question: Yes. You have full sleve tats, you need to have them covered all the time. No matter what the temp is outside.

Perhaps it was an intentional recruiting ploy. From what I hear, military recruiters will tell you things that are not reality once they get you to enlist. On a subtle level, the video could attract those who may have a tattoo sleeve(s) that otherwise might not have considered the CHP or a career in law enforcement, thereby increasing their potential applicant pool. Clever if you ask me. :nerd

How long does it take to get a background investigator assigned? Its been 5 months since I turned in my PHS. Does it usually take this long?
