Yay datacenters...driving up electricity costs

I not in favor of that either. Kessler will be the limit there. Its a false choice between AI data centers on earth vs in space. We simply don’t not need ubiquitous AI. We definitely don’t need it as a commercial venture with zero plan on how to manage the social fallout. Believe me, I would love to be wrong about AI being a WMD. I don’t think I am though.

You sound like folks saying that we don't need Internet to every household, brother. We need controls around what AI is allowed to do, but it's a nascent technology. We really have no idea what it can unlock for coming generations, much like your grandfather never thought that the newspaper in his hand on the commode would be replaced by a smartphone in the hand of his grandson. Just try wiping with the smartphone, tho. Kinda ineffective.

Exactly. It's a lab grade tool at this point. One we should absolutely be dedicating the best minds to putting to work for humanity. You and I both know that is NOT what's its going to happen. I think we will look back with sadness that we released it into the wild to make a quick buck and subjugate what used to be the working class. You have illustrated my point perfectly. AI is a fire we shouldn't be playing with the way we are.

FWIW, i know is sounds like I'm coming down on YOU as a person. I'm really not. I know where your heart is and I don't think you are "responsible" for what's coming. We have failed to be wise collectively. I get your taking the work you can get and paying the bills. I have manufactured weapons before. None of are completely "pure" in this economic system.

Because it's not available until 2028. We are, but the demand is today, and won't wait for the buildings to be built (longest lead times are six to nine months for gensets, UPSes, chillers, CRAHs, CDUs, etc. The walls and floor are easy.) I'm expanding every facility I'm in today and acquiring new capacity in the dozens of MW per tranche.
Ah so the REAL material shortage isn't RAM but transformers and cooling.... (too bad we used to rely on overseas friends for that as well huh?)

So you are flipping any building that was already equipped with enough power and cooling to a cluster then?

I once believed I could help the people building A.I. get ahead of the problems it would create. This week confirmed my slow realization that OpenAI seems to have stopped asking the questions I’d joined to help answer.

I don’t believe ads are immoral or unethical. A.I. is expensive to run, and ads can be a critical source of revenue. But I have deep reservations about OpenAI’s strategy.

For several years, ChatGPT users have generated an archive of human candor that has no precedent, in part because people believed they were talking to something that had no ulterior agenda. Users are interacting with an adaptive, conversational voice to which they have revealed their most private thoughts. People tell chatbots about their medical fears, their relationship problems, their beliefs about God and the afterlife. Advertising built on that archive creates a potential for manipulating users in ways we don’t have the tools to understand, let alone prevent.

It's everything. I can't get DIMMs, I can't get NICs, I can't get NVMe, I can't get CPUs, I can't get GPUs, I can't get racks, I can't get PDUs, I can't get CDUs, I can't get chillers, CRAHs, airside economizers for cooling towers, none of it. Lead times are 20x of last year in some cases. Rumors I'm hearing from my NVMe vendors is that supply side constraints won't let up until 2029 at this point (that's when products sourced from a new NVMe foundry will start to hit the market.)

I get your perspective and agree with it; I also think that it could enable a future where there is no need for humans to labor. The path we tread between here and there is not dictated by AI, but by the moral compasses of those using it. We were tested with the atom bomb- our society's collective morality (has so far) stopped it from being used, but _not until we'd used it_. What will the fallout of AI be? Only time can tell- but we need to regulate it and stop this wild west 'anything goes' development with it before it craters the stock market, commodities markets, healthcare industry, and every other market it can be used to rig.

I'm still pissed that previously crypto, and now AI, are causing hardware prices to skyrocket. Fuck all that noise :mad

It's moved a bit since this was made, past Soylent Green, almost to children of Men.
Terminator oddly not on the timeline

Pushback.

"...a dozen states have targeted data centers with separate, higher electric rates to protect other customers. States also are requiring long-term commitments and financial guarantees through collateral before greenlighting infrastructure investments for new data center projects. But lawmakers acknowledge that numerous factors affect energy prices, so targeting data center-specific costs can be complicated."

Glad that states are waking up and pushing back.

Data centers are impactful things, requiring huge energy volume and large water/cooling requirements. They should absolutely not be allowed in areas that are dry or are faced with electricity blackouts due to hot summers.

Cheap desert land in Az. The only thing they buy,
Everything else is supplied by the power company, or the state.
Outsiders were also buying up water rights in Az. for resale, another Owens Valley.

Apparently there are a bunch of foreign-owned farms in Arizona who are hogging water, growing crops and shipping them out of the country.

Yep, some of this was only a mile or so away from my wintering spot in Hope Az.
Growing alfalfa, for shipment back to the sand pile, Arabians need to be fed, ya know.
They can't sell this in the US, export only, locals were looking for horse feed, but no, not available.
The Az. canal runs along this property, but not used, local water table is pumped.

Red Lake a dry lake bed north of Kingman, that was looked at for water to be sent to Los Vegas.

It will be great when the data pools are fully poisoned and it's just trillions of dollars of junk in buildings where kids go to smoke weed and break bottles.

But it isn't just AI driving this, right? It's also cloud usage. So all you guys constantly sync'ing your shit to the cloud, and even worse, your employers doing the same.....

The dead Internet theory is coming true. It's all bots reposting bot content
