Do You Mountain Bike?

I'll be out of town until Tuesday, in Florida.

Once I'm back, I am doing Mailbox all day on a Saturday or Sunday. :)

Downieville Classic 2008

Just to double check - who all is in for the race this year?

Me - DH (XC if I can't get in)
Lisa - XC
Scott - XC + DH
Jeff Tigert - XC (just talked to him at the AFM race)
Roxy - DH (are you still going for it?)

Sonny? Jeremy?

Came across this photo of the descent on the XC course - cool stuff :)

As you stated, ill be racing the AM class, either sport or expert, as they give you a choice this yr. I would be in the expert DH, but prob beg or sport xc, bc ill be on my enduro sl. So, its kind of a toss up for me....Hmmm

Mikey, when is DV?
Do you have to sign up way ahead of time for the dh race?

downievilleclassic.com reg open at 8pm on april 21st. the dh-only class WILL FILL UP WITHIN AND HOUR, so be on your game.

still playing DV by ear

Hope you're doing lots of training! When Lisa and I looked at last year's XC results last night, it looked like the gal who won her class at the CCCX XC race barely made the cutoff. She's thinking about ramping up her midweek roadbike rides with some longer 20-30 mile weekend trail rides to prepare for it. I have a few routes in mind, and I suspect she's not going to be a happy camper when she's doing them. I seem to handle the long suffer-fests better than she does.

Kick ass. I hope Ryan has a bike by then too.

I got home at 8:30 last year, and remembered on the trip home that registration was that evening. When I got home, 5 of the 6 classes were full.

Mike, when are they?

July 11 through 13. If you're a little more budget conscious, it's a lot cheaper to go up with friends and shuttle it on any given weekend. The DH race is $100, hard to get into, and you only get one run. To just go up and shuttle it any other weekend is $20, give or take a few bucks, depending on which shop you go with.

whats this about a cutoff on the xc?

I think there's a three hour limit to finish the XC course, and you must qualify (finish within those 3 hours) to run the DH portion if you are doing the AM. I may be mistaken though.

They posted up at the event last year that you needed to reach the summit by a certain time. If you didn't - and I could be wrong - I don't think they let you finish the course.

I highly doubt you have any reason to worry. I know some of the people who finished further back in the race, and I'd put money on you being well within the cutoff.

E-caps to prevent cramping, with some time to acclimate to the altitude, and you're totally good.

Just wondering John - where'd ya find that info? We're gonna pre-run the XC course when it opens up, and the cutoff time would be a good thing to know.

It's definitely longer than 3 hours though. Some stats:

- The gal who beat Lisa at CCCX XC - 4:43, 9th of 10 in class (Beginner Women).
- The guy who finished behind me at CCCX XC - 4:39, 27th of 27 in class (Beginner Men 35-44).
- Jeff Tigert - 3:00, 7th of 41 in class* (Beginner men 19-34).

* Used a Foes Fly 45 lb DH bike :)

I'll see if I can dig up the info. I think I read it in the Weir v. Beneke article.

That was a cool article. Looking at the Sea Otter DH results, Beneke smoked Weir - it'll be kinda neat to see what Beneke does with some open trail ahead of him and fewer riders to pass.

Looks like Dimitri from the Annadel ride did the XC course in 2:57 - that's pretty damn solid!

I wouldn't call that smoking Weir, even though he had to deal with some traffic, Weir had to deal with mechanical issues towards the end of the DH:

2007

PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Mark Weir: #1 0:46:14.5 1 33
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Jason Moeschler: #2 0:46:51.2 2 33
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Nathan Riddle: #7 0:47:09.3 3 33
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Jergen Beneke: #18 0:47:33.7 4 33

2006

PRO MEN Mark Weir: #1 0:38:57 1 40
PRO MEN Jason Moeschler: #2 0:40:22 2 40

Particularly when it seems as though he only went all out in the DH and I do not even see his results in he Pro AM class.

2007

PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Jason Moeschler 1:53:08.3 0:46:51.2 2:39:59.5 1 30
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Mark Weir 1:55:42.3 0:46:14.5 2:41:56.8 2 30
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Tim Olson 1:56:05.1 0:48:52.0 2:44:57.1 3 30
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Kenny Burt 2:01:57.8 0:50:08.3 2:52:06.1 4 30
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Mike West 2:06:43.6 0:48:25.7 2:55:09.3 5 30
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Ariel Lindsley 2:06:25.3 0:49:09.6 2:55:34.9 6 30
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Sean Donovan 2:06:05.8 0:52:07.3 2:58:13.1 7 30
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Kevin Smallman 2:10:46.0 0:53:36.2 3:04:22.2 8 30
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Nathan Riddle 2:19:24.2 0:47:09.3 3:06:33.6 9 30
PRO MEN ALL-MOUNTAIN Anthony Medaglia 2:16:26.6 0:50:47.3 3:07:13.9 10 30

Moeschler is my fucking hero. :thumbup

For sure, it was a close race at DV. It probably will be again.

I was actually looking at the Sea Otter DH results (not the Downieville DH results) from 2007 though, from http://www.seaotterclassic.com/pdf/results/2007/MTB_Downhill/401.pdf

6th place - BENEKE JURGEN KINGSTON NY OLD WORLD PLASTER 0:02:18
30th place - WEIR MARK NOVATO CA WTB/SANTA CRUZ 0:02:24

The format of the DV race is what makes this really intriguing and exciting for me. It requires a rider to be well rounded, not just be able to go balls out for 2.5 minutes. If Beneke does not do the XC portion, to me, his DH finish will be close to meaningless. I'm still looking forward to seeing how it goes. Even if I do not race XC, I would want to go to check out the scene and see the action live. It will depend mostly on the baby, being that she's due in late July.

Oh, and don't laugh, but I may be taking after Budman... I've been asked to be a spin class instructor :laughing
