Do You Mountain Bike?

I will be there at least 2 weekends a month, for most of the summer---minus downieville classic weekend. getting a season pass and staying with a friend on the trail crew:thumbup

I know Harpo and I are good for at least a couple of days up there - from the looks of things, so are Ryan (Pakow), Sonny (Fawndog) and Roxy. We'll give ya a heads up!

What are you using as a downhill rig?

a huffy, bought new from K-mart. ;)

I built a 04 S-Works Enduro up from a bare frame, even though I haven't really ridden a mountain bike since college. I am trying to take it easy getting back into bicycles, but northstar is about 40 miles from my doorstep. :thumbup

LOL :laughing Here is what happens to cheap bikes, ..... and idiots that don't wear helmets..

:laughing:ride

Here is a glamor shot of my huffy from the Sacramento river trail last weekend.

I'm such a squid I crack myself up. I can't ride for shit but I'm all about the bling. Even did the classic standing-still crash 'cause I couldn't unclip my shoe! :squid

Nice bike. Let me know if you ever want to hit Auburn. I'm usually on the trail bike but shuttle the big bike from time to time.

I can't wait for Northstar. I'm usually up there once or twice a week.

Come on Kurt, you're not the first fast guy to come in here and say "i'm slow".

Hey J B, maybe one of these days you can show us around Aburn. It's just as far as Annandale for some of us.

Either way, looks like I'm in for the Boggs 8Hr this weekend --WOOHOO!!:party

Let the pain begin!:laughing

Which trails do you normally ride in Auburn? I dig that place :)

Oh yeah? Are you guys a 4-man (+woman) team now?

:thumbup It's not that bad Roxy, compared to that downhill crazyness you guys are used to. The question is can you guys be FAST going uphill as well:devil This course is all pedal pedal pedal pedal pedal pedal

I heart XC:thumbup

I'm sure its not that bad, each lap is ~1200' of climbing...I'll just think of it as West/East Ridge (1500') with less downhill.

I'm wondering if I should stick with the 24lb hardtail or the hefty 34lb Turner:toothless

Do not bring the Turner. Sonny's Enduro was a beast for that course, way overkill. If it wasn't for the fact that my bike pedals so well uphill even mine would be a beast to lug around that course. There are just a few spots where you will wish you had FS but not enough to actually bring one. I think the lightweight hardtailers are going to own this course.

The only difference with the climbing here is that alot of it is fast. It's not slow really steep acsents like in the Oakland hills. These are long drawn out uphills of seemingly mild grade. Even more drawn out than the CCCX course. You will rarely get down into the small chainwheel upfront until you get really tired. It's going to be all about muscle, stamina, and endurance here. Fuel Fuel Fuel is all I can say. Sonny and I planned on a leisurly ride to investigate so I don't think (or at least as for me) we concentrated enough on nourishment. But we ended up pushing pretty hard and I was quite dehydrated after that lap which was still only 75% of the effort I intend to put into the race. I'm going to drink a gallon of water before this race and have fanny pack full of salt:teeth

The HT it is!:teeth

After riding West/East on the HT, riding the Turner was absolutely dreadful -- I can't believe I managed to put myself through 2 laps of it yesterday.

Nutrition for long distance events is fairly easy, I've always succeeded with sips of gatorade every 15 minutes, gel/bar every 30-45 minutes and a small meal every 2-2.5 hours (fruit with yogurt, and PB&J sammich).

For this race, I will have the gels/bars taped on the bike, and carrying gatorade in the camelbak...while having the smaller meals in between sessions.

Here's the MB player for the last 10 miles of the MTB, and the 4 mile run from my xterra:

I realized I really do love XC riding, pedal, pedal, pedal all the way. I ran the bike at just under 26 lbs, with Mutano Raptor 2.4's at 36 psi, and had no real traction issues, although rolling resistance seemed high on some of the loose flats.

My legs were cramping by the run, and could not lengthen my stride more than 2 feet without both quads going into cramps. Full write up still to come.

Trail: Confluence, Culvert, Manzanita, Stagecoach, Old Stage Coach, a trail we call "Tinker's" off of Stagecoach. Occasionally will climb Clementine to Forest Hill connector and do Forest Hill Loop with Culvert/Confluence thrown in.

DH: Mammoth OHV, Culvert/Confluence.

Excellent route - I usually hit all the trails you mentioned with the exception of Tinker's since the No Bikes sign was raised. Is that still there?

Nothing like jumping in the river at the end of the ride after doing the loop on a warm day!

There hasn't been a sign at the trail head for a few months now.

If no one knows about this then maybe ya might wanna come on out and get some shuttling in.
