Do You Mountain Bike?

Had the chance to watch the Stars & Bars dh movie ....pretty dope:cool

We grabbed a copy of it from the RideSFO shop on Saturday :) Phil is a cool cat!

Going to be doing this ride twice a month now, so i wanna do it with you mike at least once or twice before d ville :)

I'm game for trying it once. Since I'm only planning on doing the Downhill rather than the All Mountain (assuming I get in), I'm not too worried about the mileage. I do plan on chilling out with my trail riding until my triathlon in the first week of May, just to make sure I don't hurt myself. Once I'm past that, I'm all trails.

I didn't see you on the list of "finishers" posted on mtbr.com - I was wondering how you did!

The fun ends somewhere after 24 -25 miles. Did 30 once and when it was done I was glad it was done.

Let's do it again this summer. Auburn!

ya, i wasn't one of the people who were going up and down aptos creek fireroad for an hour trying to get that last 900 feet or so. i was having probs with my lower back, and the 34 lb bike was starting to get to me without a granny gear, so when i heard someone say "beer for all back at the BBQ" (with no mention of minors <21) i said F THIS, 9,000 and change is plenty for me, and cruised the 13 miles DOWNHILL back to the car.

on a side note, you tri people have any tips on lower back pain? i only get in on rides over about 4 hrs, but when it starts, it FAWKING HURTS, and pretty much kills any energy i had previously.

another side note, did you really snap some ribs on that crash sonny? shitty if ya did. ive broken 3 and ohhh boy is it fun :shocker

Yea, welcome to my world only it doesn't take anywhere near 4 hours to start.

Hmmmm, .... as per recomendation - Well I strongly reccomend two 8 inch long titanium rods place at center spine :wtf Ohhh, never mind! That probably won't help. :teeth

Alright sonny, im down for this boggs race deal. Whats the plan, camp? go up morning of? I'm down for either, and can come back sat night or sunday morning, makes no difference to me. I should be able to make this pre ride thing this weekend also, long as nothing major comes up. Any idea/plans on how to split the 8 hrs up fairly? 8 hrs isnt a TON of time, just a thought

It's probably simply your posture. It's hard to concentrate and keep good form when you are heaving and grunting trying to get up a hill. I was having serious back pain when I first started racing. Then I did the Chi running class with mike and a few others. It's all about posture. I carried some of that over into my biking and it has helped loads. It's almost unavoidable to lean far forward whn you are going up a really steep incline but I think alot of us tend to do the same even when we don't really need to on less aggressive climbs like some of the stuff at demo. Try locking your pelvis rigid and keeping your back straight when climbing. You can lean forward but concentrate on doing it at the butt and not bending at the waist. Kinda hard to visualize but it works. I did 25 miles at Demo recently including tractor uphill and of all the pains I came home with my back wasn't the worst and it normally is.

well some of the guys asked about Dom, but we should ride Boggs on Sunday instead.

i'd like to camp, just looking to work out a generator.
a properly set up bike will reduce the muscle strain, but if you don't have a granny then all that "power pedaling" might be adding up. see what the roadies have to say about it, I try to spin mostly and only power pedal in short burst.

So all you racer(edit: girls too :teeth) boys too good to put together another group ride? :twofinger

Oh and Ryan, any word on a new ride?

I asked my girlfriend about it - she's a certified personal trainer and a solid triathlete. Her advice pretty much agrees with what Sonny and others have said already - it's probably an issue of posture on the bike with underdeveloped lower back muscles. Adjusting your posture when climbing, adjusting your seat height (if you don't already do that) and incorporating back extensions into your training could help.

She said it's sometimes a fit issue on a road bike, but that gets a little tricky on the mountain bike, as a nice XC climbing setup is quite different from a flexible DH setup. On my Cannondale, I have to hunch over to keep my front end down on climbs, and it works my back. On my Specialized, I can get away with being more upright.

You need core strength! Core strength refers to the muscles of your abs and back and their ability to support your spine and keep your body stable and balanced. Strengthening your core will reduce back pain.

..ie work on abs/obliques and do some back extensions...

:thumbupback Agreed. i 'blew out' my lower twice in the past before. Every morning when i wake up i do core exercises.. sit-up, back extensions, etc.. Along with weight training the days i don't ride.

I will start incorporating this things into my daily workout routine which is as follows:

-Wake up, Eat 2 home made breakfast burritos w/ eggs and salsa
-go to work/school from 730-5pm, with a meaty sandwich and banana or apple thrown in for lunch
HW/dinner, then ride until 10-11 on local trails, usually do 2-3 hrs a night, unless i ride JMP with the SFO guys.

I sorta figured it was a core prob, as that has usually been my prob in the past. Prob riding my bike TOO much for it right now, until i strengthen it up a bit.

crunches, sit ups here we come.

Begin your core training with simple traditional exercises- abdominal crunches, back extensions, squat lifts, deadlifts, leg presses, lunges, leg raises, pull-ups, pull-downs-that stress the core muscles.

You can do sissy squats also. Find a low chair and practice sitting and standing, but don't sit all the way, just sit until your butt brushes the chair and stand back up. Do like sets of 50 and feel the burn!
