5 dead in limo crash on SM bridge

Are there safety regulations for Limos? You would think there would be an emergency door on those things now.

The driver is required to perform a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle and verify it's compliance with DOT safety regulations covering vehicles-for-hire. All of this is documented on a form that they fill out and sign before starting their shift.

It's easier said than done. A screwdriver can do it only by prying on the edge of the glass using the jamb as a point of leverage.

Well, I'm convinced.:teeth

Sheesh people. You can't break tempered glass by pounding on it IN THE MIDDLE! :rolleyes (Alan's advice is valid though)

I can be broken very easily though. I've broken them in training by ripping the radio antenna off the car and using that. The trick is to get out into the corners. I carried a simple punch tool in my turnouts to do this too.

This is a stupid video...but it proves the point.

Knowing this (how to break a car window) could save someone someday (a pet or child locked in a hot car for example)

Holy shit that's useful to know! I learned something today! :thumbup

after being the first person to come upon a limo vs car crash on the foggy 1 just north of Santa Cruz I will never get in another limo again unless it has seat belts. The pile of dead and dying in the cab was enough. What was worse? They were all screaming for me to help them and there wasn't a damn thing I could do besides the most basic stuff.

Oddly enough i broke the car window with a tap from my wedding ring right in the center of it.

I remember one time at a landfill I was trying to smash a side window in a wrecked car before my brother smashed it (thats the kind of things brothers do).
I picked up a brake rotor and ran at the car and threw it. Its path wasnt quite perpendicular and the damn thing bounced off the window. We couldn't believe it didn't brake. But it wasn't long before we fixed that :cool

see...that's the problem right there. You can't make a window slow down :p

Okay that enough, I'm being bullied on the internet. Can everyone just go back to picking on Lou

I have one in my truck and one in my vest.

^^^ good thing to have also if driving out in the delta. Probably more than a few drownings from people going into the water and not able to get out.

Heard an interview with the driver a bit ago on KCBS.

Evidently one of the ladies tapped on the glass and mentioned smoke and he thought they meant pull over so they could smoke. :wtf

30 to 60 seconds later they tapped again and made it clear there was smoke in the back.

He pulled over.

Several women piled through the window leading to the front but when they opened the back door the whole car went up immediately. :(

He had a lot of experience as a shuttle bus driver but had only been driving a Limo for two months.

What a tragedy.
