busy may schedule

looks like May will be tough

especially if you are also trying to attend some of the pro motorcross and flat track events. May 5 for Calistoga flat track and May 19 for both Hangtown and Sacramento Mile. And toss in Memorial Day weekend as well. Might as well make the whole month one big vacation!

... yes, was talking to a long-time
Sheetiron guy, who says he's going
to Hangtown this year ... sez he's
tired of having to miss epic motox to go to the SI300 ... :laughing

I'm trying to figure out shift-shifting, but
working on a Saturday/Sunday does not
help too much with back-to-back weekend events ...
it'll be vacation/sick time, I guess ... :party

... really kind of want to do the Mendo Rally
this year because I don't think there will
be a lot of snow on Mt Hull ... (compared to last year, anyway)

... any one else noticing sign-ups for the usual
events seems low ...? Death Valley Daze actually
fell apart and does not seem to be happening, there
have been posts on the n00bs Rally asking people to
register (it usually sells out), the Mendo Rally has posted
that there seems to be less interest ...? :dunno

... worried about keeping my poor KLR running
with DV and Cedarville runs ... :facepalm

Soooo.... looks like my riding career is at an end. Giving you ADV folks a first dibs on this. Anybody interested in a 2008 KTM 990 ADV with a whopping 13,000 miles on the clock?

I may have a buyer interested in transitioning to an ADV. Still available before I tell him about the bike?

Ive owned the 2004 950 and now a '17 1090R. Love KTM!!!

Decided to do a little "recon" of Mendo forest on my new 1190 before killing off the stock rear TKC80. Fortunately had just finished wiring up heated grips, gear, headlight upgrade, skid plate.. you know the usual cruft. Just your avg day trip from SF.

Plan was to go as far I felt comfortable then turn around if not feeling it. Unfortunately, that point turned out to be 90% through the journey, at roughly the 3rd marker below.

Route as it turned out: Google Maps

And right around here is where I should have turned around.

Had planned to cut up to Alder Springs Rd then drop into the valley, but the last mile was climbing up, north, and into heavy snow with large snow/ice sheets covering the road. And I had no idea if Alder was even open. So instead I went down, south, and away from the weather hoping the apparent road at Dogtown was open.

Still had to traverse some large/ice snow sheets (no pics, survival mode kicked in) but since I could punch through the icy crud it wasn't too bad. Worst (i.e. zero) traction by far was one some of the wet clay portions.

Turned out the road was open down from Dogtown, so ended up getting down into the valley with about 30 min of daylight to spare. :D

John, Trey will be at Hollister Saturday night. Be on the lookout for his LandCruiser and KDX.

Nah. He'd probably appreciate riding with someone who actually knows how to ride. :laughing

... spent Friday night around the campfire
at Hollister and on Saturday morning packed
up and took the old San Juan Grade over to
Salinas to watch the TT races ... the San Juan Grade
replaced the Old Stage Road in the early '20s, and
you can still see some of the original pavement ...
god bless concrete say the Romans ... :toothless

... here's some history about the Old Stage Road
and the San Juan Grade ...

mtmdnnamap.jpg

... here's a map that kind of shows the way from
Lower Haight past Alice's, down Hwy 35, where we
were pleased to find the huge winter wash-outs
have been repaired, past the Summit Store and
up and over the dirt on Mt. Madonna and down
to Redwood Retreat Road (not really shown on map) ... :party

... looked for and missed tag3 and his Kawasaki ... :(

He wasn't there until Saturday evening which is why you missed him.

You still owe me one trip down Mt. Madonna road Johnny!

hey all, I'm not sure where to post this so I'll join in here. For whatever reason my wife just started to love riding pillion which led me to buying an FJ-09. I know its not an adventure bike bike I'd like to try some fire roads or similar hardpacked, wide, relatively smooth trails in the area and even better yet if they lead do a camp site. Hopefully theres something out there within a few hours riding. I have a decent amount of dirt experiance, and enjoy goaty roads on the supermoto but taking a bigger bike, especially with a passenger, will be a new adventure for me. The FJ has a skid plate, engine guards and most important, Ohlins on the front and rear. It still has road tires but its about as ready as it'll ever be. Any help with be much appreciated!

That looks awesome Bruno!

Ditto what Bruno said about the ADV Mendo rally - did it years ago when just learning dirt on my big vstrom - was an absolute blast with excellent peeps and riding :thumbup:thumbup big ADV bikes as well as small and fast dualsports. Was a group of couples back then all riding two-up on 990s - fast and with mad dirt skillz :twofinger

I'd consider throwing on some dirt tires or at list some decent 50-50 tires: TKC80 up front and a Shinko 705? or Hiedenau Scout works well on the bigger bikes - you will notice the difference and be happy you did :thumbup:teeth

Do signup proper with the organizers - there are usually cancellations and they work hard to accommodate everyone. Don't miss the Sat night pulled-pork - it's to die for:teeth

/T
