Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

x2 on the Mendo Rally ... :party

... if the Mendo Rally dates don’t work
for you this year, Lake Pillsbury is still
a good gateway into the Mendocino National Forest
from the Bay Area that more or less meets your
“few hours” away goal ... easy dirt county
roads to get to the campgrounds at Lake Pillsbury ...

Mendo probably has hundreds of miles of bash-plated FJ-09
worthy fire roads ...

... I used a AAA map, which showed me the big
“M” and “FH7” through-routes, to help make sense
of google maps and the excellent $10 Mendo NF map
you can buy at ranger stations, which each otherwise had too much
detail (for me) to understand or easily find the
through routes without the help of the simpler AAA map ...

... if you like the social camping scene,
check out a StonyBARF weekend ... Stonyford/Fouts Springs
is a gateway to Mendo I use from the east ... there
will be lots of easy-Mendo-fireroad knowledge
among the dirt-bike peeps ... :thumbup

Mendo gets too hot for me in the summer ...
Hwy 108/Sonora Pass has a couple of
reasonably close and easy dispersed
camping routes when the passes open ...

... sure someone else will chime in
about other easy/close/dirt/camping ...

... my wife rides a ‘15 FJ-09 she loves ... :ride

Regarding maps: mapper.acme.com has USGS topo maps, which show the type of road (rather than just showing that there is a road, like google, which often shows roads where there aren't any).

Bungee Brent's Backyard Boogie is another good one! Happens in June I'll get a flyer.

Stonyford Stomp/Sheetiron Mountain Shakedown ...

It’s a pretty easy loop, but if you are unsure of your bike or dirt ability for the SI it would be a good way to shake out any bugs ahead of time. I had been planning to do this at StonyBARF 10.5, but they changed the dates on that gathering to later in May..

attachment.php

... heading up there this pm,
Cabrito and I will try to find snow, mud, scary water crossings
and fallen trees on the way to the
top of Sheetiron Mountain ... :toothless

... may try and see if the restaurant
in Stonyford is open ... :dunno

:party

see you around
the campfire,

Wait, are you leaving for Cedarville already? :twofinger

John and I are meeting in Stony to do some dual sport riding... I think he heads up to your thing a few days later.

Oh I get what's going on, I'm just giving John some grief.

... cuz that's what we do ... :laughing
... at work Sunday, so I can leave for Cedarville on Wednesday ... :toothless

is always "yes!" :teeth ... fresh eggs supplied by Saltwater's flock, so good,
thanks Saltwater!

... Cabrito got a couple pics at the last water crossing on M3,
just before M10 ...

river.jpg

... we found a swimming hole after
our wonderful ride ...

...big "thank you" to Cabrito for
the campground hospitality and
for giving me another reason to
head up to Mendo! :thumbup

... saw a crew of big KTMs from
the Mendo Rally on M3 ...

Sheetiron Intel:
the restaurant in Stonyford is open ...
the Stonyford Store had 91 octane and good sandwiches ...
SI likely water crossings we saw looked safe and sane ...
it may be dusty ...
it may be hot ...
it will be awesome!

see you in the
rodeo grounds,

The pleasure was all mine.. It was fun following you and watching you launch the KLR off all the water bars...

Getting there, but not quite ready for prime time.. The XR is totally read for anything..

Great to see Cabrito back on that XR! Looks fantastic!

Thanks G, it's great being back on the bike for sure.

Somehow I always end up in mud puddles..

Stonyford is beautiful right now. .

I love the pics of John in the water crossing.

... Cabrito's post Baja-resurrection, pre-mud-puddle XR400 ... :laughing

... kind of heartwarming to hear about all the
help the XR had getting back together from
BARF Baja vets ... one of the prettiest XR400s ever ... :thumbup

Took a day ride out to the Yolla Bolly wilderness. John knows where this is at... Parked at Ides Cove Backpacker trailhead and walked in 1/2 hour to Square Lake for a bit of lunch and visit with some folks flyfishing. The granite knob behind the lake is the South Yolla Bolly.

... wow, how cool is Square Lake? :thumbup

... hope to be riding by Ides Cove on Thursday, 7/19,
if I can get my KLR running ... :rolleyes

... thanks for dragging me up there in 2017! :toothless

Went camping in Eldorado National Forest last weekend with a friend. The plan was to go from 88 to 50 to 80 using forest service roads. Unfortunately, the only suitable path from 50 to 80 was closed, so we exited by Wentworth Springs Road (very nice) to Georgetown.

Stopped by the abandoned ski lifts where Mormon Immigrant Trail takes off of 88.

Bike took a little nap in a beautiful spot on one of the forest service roads.

Break on the side of one of the nicer sections of forest service road.

Accidentally ended up part of Wentworth Springs Road that was totally inappropriate for my bike with luggage.

Camped by Union Valley Reservoir the final night.
