All the sh!t talk about Harley Davidison

HD's are cruisers and you look really cool on them with a HD t-shirt, pirate hat, chaps, and extra points if you are super duper loud!

Whatever dood.

My dad and brother are HD brethern. Whatever.

All I have to say is, there's a long list of bikes I'd buy before an HD.

That Honda ST1300 being one.

This Harley mystique is kind of funny/odd to me, and I've always been pretty turned off by the image of the riders.

But when I went looking for a bike a couple of months ago, I decided I needed (at my age) something with upright ergonomics and a pulled back bar, so I got a cruiser. Not being into Harleys saved me some serious money. Got a used V Star instead.

Btw, ran out of gas on 280 this afternoon and 3 or 4 crusiers and one cop flew by without stopping. The cop had an excuse (speed trap a few hundred yards back), but the M/C's - that surprised me. Without looking up, but hearing these loud frickin' pipes pass me, I wondered if they were Harley riders (hey, I'm not proud of my biases, but am willing to explore them). And by running out of gas, I mean I had to find my reserve tank (for the 1st time), and pulled over to do it.

But the deal with Harley (from a bizness point of view) is fantastic brand marketing. Harley, Apple, Coca-Cola, Nike - these companies have tremendous value in their name (and sometimes even in their products).

edit: speaking of brand, I have to confess to buying "American" on occasion: Fender (see Avatar), Gibson, Martin

Riding a Harley is a Blues thang... you can't blues ride an RC45...
oh yeah!

And so the thread will morph again. Gatemouth and Albert Collins are in the pantheon of Gods , along with Lightning Hopkins , Sonny Boy ( 1 and 2) . Bessie Smith leads the choir. All the way back to Hart Wand and W.C. Handy.

'Course we wouldn't have any of it today if Lomax hadn't started running around recording it out of the trunk of his car.

The MoCo now makes a neat little bike that might change a few opinions about Harleys. The XR1200. Its a hoot to ride. By no means a "sport" bike, but pretty a darned sporty (no pun intended) offering from the boys and girls in Wiscansen. It would have been rockin in 1975 or so, but still a real fun motorcycle. If you get a chance to ride one, I think you will very pleasantly surprised. :thumbup

Railed the chop this weekend... doing 100 mph on a springer-hard tail is like breaking the sound barrier in a biplane.

Nice riding shot. This one too.

Borrowed a friend's sportster to take a then-GF on her first ride. It nice and low to the ground, and had a relatively comfy seat and backrest for her. It was perfect for her. It was uninteresting but fine for me. Handling, brakes, motor, transmission, clutch all left a lot to be desired, but at our casual pace it was all workable. And that model is actually quite affordable... ~$8k I think.

If you're not in it for the "sport," but you simply like cruising in open air, it shouldn't be surprising that a cruiser is a good option.

A dude who buys monster cables can be an expert at electronic entertainment, or a guy who uses craftsman can be a great mechanic.

I'm with you on bikes and cables, but fill me in on hand tools. I ask out of curiosity not indignation. Is there a cheaper option than craftsman that still gets the job done and has lifetime replacement? I've never bothered looking.

I think the home depot and lowes lines do (matco and kobalt iirc).

If you want cheaper tools, try the yard sales and flea markets. Santa Cruz flea market has some tool dealers-lots of good prices for good stuff.

I happily bought a broken craftsman socket wrench off some idiot for $1 and turned it in for a new one.

That said, craftsman tools aren't bad if you buy one of the big kits.

Normally I wouldn't threadjack but we don't seem to really be on topic.

Besides, what better thread to discuss needing tools than a harley thread? :teeth

I wanted a Harley but they wouldn't sell me one cause I got no tats. :cry

Don't forget to mention the two guys on FXRs on the hooligan ride that were more than capable of keeping up!

It's less comfortable than the bandit? The seat on that thing kills me, when I rode it for the first time up from SLO my ass was devastated. (/no homo)

btw, i still need to edit and upload the hoolie ride. and i got the pass on the dy in front of the cop.:teeth

Excellent!

I ran the Street Glide today, slapped a new exhaust on 'er too. Sounds proper now. Oh how I love these things....
