Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

If that's the case, then the guys she was sparring with treated her with baby gloves.

I was in martial arts, I know the environment quite well. At least with a valid school. She shouldn't have been told that she could go toe to toe with guys much bigger than her. Pure and simple. If she had that impression, as she apparently did, she was done a massive disservice.

Also, are you sure she didn't watch those movies where women go toe to toe with guys and kick their asses? If find it hard to believe that she had that kind of confidence and that it wasn't reinforced by idiot movies like that.

I'm all for empowerment of women, but putting stupid ideas in their head isn't empowerment, it's setting them up for failure.

Dude. Stop acting like you know my friend better than I know her.
Just fucking stop.

...I've noticed that when you get in an argument, you tend to want to put the person on the other side the argument into your own defined box...It's a crappy tactic for many reasons, not the least is wrongly defining others into a box that is entirely wrong.

:thumbup

Valid points :thumbup, you did not say inferior. Please don't see my arguments as just emotional. I logic the shit out of everything, to a fault :laughing.

For that line of questioning, I agree I made some inaccurate assumptions. Those questions cannot be the first or only ones to help make our environment more safe.

I'm very much a numbers guy, but for hate crime the numbers aren't there and I don't see a feasible way to get an accurate dataset. AI/ML has this problem as well, biased datasets used as input for their models. Bad, missing, or inaccurate data = garbage in, garbage out.

For this Atlanta incident, it's not a clear cut event. It's messy with all sorts of issues at play: mental illness, misogyny, racism, etc. And the media has not deemed it as a hate crime really. Just a could-be, is it a hate crime, etc.

The Asian women thing...dude, there's all sorts of racist historical context for how Asian women are portrayed in the U.S..

Understanding it's not clear cut is why I'm being very measured in how I'm approaching our collective dialogue.
We're essentially putting this criminal event through a "Trial of Public Opinion". Given that it's the internet and what we say is very public, I'd like to set an example of a civil discussion on race with the data on hand.

Also, while the focus is on Asian Women because they were his victims there's a broader discussion to be had that will benefit a greater pool.

Women as a whole suffer a number of unique issues that Men don't. Let's take a look at Polygamy, Sex Work, and Religion (Specifically Islam).
One can argue that each on of those categories harms women.
Polygamy argument could be a single man in possession and control of multiple women. (Subjugation?)
Sex Work = Empowered Women or Subjugated Women
Religion = Male dominant roles of power. Also specific to Islam there's genital mutilation, honor killings, and Women having or choosing to be covered in order to "Prevent Temptation" of Men

Speaking to these issues as a whole changes society for the betterment of all women, Asians included.

This is Systemically "Anti Asian":

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-...-drop-academic-achievement-admission-n1256488

The proposal calls for a random lottery for admission to Lowell, which is majority Asian American, to replace the current grade-and-test system, which allegedly "excludes students of color" and "perpetuates the opportunity gap."

Of Lowell's 2,871 students, 18.1 percent are white, 11.5 percent Hispanic, 1.8 percent Black and 50.6 percent Asian, largely Chinese, according to the most recent state education data. That compares to the district's 52,778 total enrollment of 14.9 percent white, 28.2 percent Hispanic, 6.4 percent Black and 33.4 percent Asian.

Are they implying that Asians are not "People of Color"?

I guess the real question is should a District High School resemble the District's population, which is, indeed, 33 percent Asian but not 51 percent Asian.

From your link.

The school is the San Francisco Unified School District's only 9-12 campus that uses a formula of grades and standardized test scores for admission of most students...

yes. model minority in full effect.

Who the heck would want to go to that h.s.? Never knew a public high school could have an admissions process...just like Taiwan and other Asian countries, which is nuts. Insane concentration of burnout kids and tiger parents, wtf. My older son (7th) attends a private school, mildly competitive, nothing like Harker. One of his good friends is Korean and her parents have private tutors, cram school style. She's up all night and doing work all weekend for cram school stuff. She's not taking it well at all, the "don't complain" and "honor your family" is at the maximum level :(.

It is weird to me that a kid can't go to the Public High School closest to where they live.

That would seem to be the priority for a Public School in my view but maybe I'm behind the times. :afm199

A key piece of data is getting overlooked: "Just the right amount of alcohol." :laughing

Probably no need to speculate about what movies she watches or how good her training was.

So should the NBA be 76% White, 19% Hispanic, 13% Black, and 6% Asian?

"National" Basketball Association; therefore it should reflect the demographics of the Nation, right?

We are talking about a District PUBLIC School.

Should your kid not have access to the nearest public school to your house be it Elementary School, Middle School or High School?

There are numerous good reasons for that including easier access that might have kids walking to School in an urban school district rather than taking some form of transportation.

On the subject of Movies VS. Reality.......

I always laugh at a movie when "a Man gets kicked in the Nuts and the Woman runs away, then the guys gets up 15 seconds later and chases her down".

That's Utter BS.

I used to dare my ex g/f's kids to punch me in the stomach as hard as they could (this was a looong time ago- when I had 6 pack abs),

Well, her Son missed and hit me in the nuts--- I was on the ground for 5 minutes gasping for air.

:laughing
... "who the heck".. that school is famous from here to SJC as a "good" public high. Ask someone else!!! As for the disparity of numbers, increase to 50% from 33% "enrolled in the District", I presume the same young persons were in the adjacent private/Catholic schools for Elementary and Middle...

Also--"Never knew"--I guess additionally from Stuy High in NYC? ;-)

. One of his good friends[outside of SF] ...her parents have private tutors, cram school style. She's up all night and doing work all weekend for cram school stuff. She's not taking it well at all, ..

:( terrible. Hope they stop that and she sleeps well.
I guess they're preparing her for Lowell, man! :laughing I've heard that the cramming for that school is "a bit much".

It is by semi-distance-weighed lottery in SF, TLDR: I think it was made that way for diversity 4.5 decades ago.

At her request, I have volunteered to teach a Chinese American friend of mine basic firearms safety in the next few weeks. I have advised her against carrying firearms without significant training beyond my informal instruction.

To answer your question as a school official, no. A neat trick of "school choice" is to throw all schools into a basket and enroll them via a formula that starts with (our)"choice." Now all the sites get to discriminate (carefully chosen word) between applicants, effectively putting the admission process through subjective criteria. Athletes come first in my experience. They are mostly students of color that can dunk.

If only there was a way for women to defend themselves effectively against anyone...:rolleyes

That took a lot of posts before someone figured it out...:laughing

I remain mystified at the timing of these incidents. I mean, things are lightening up, the checks went out, just what the hell....I saw the latest where the lady beat the guy with her cane, which was awesome. But why.... It's not like it's going to foment civil war for the righties, it's just weird.
