FTFY.

I mean, for the NFL, I think the Rooney Rule has pretty much created the meritocracy they deserve.

Tony Dungy and Mike Tomlin have pretty much put most of the BS to rest. With multiple Black HC's winning Superbowls at this point, the old racist Boomer Owner types pretty much have to sit back and let the GM's make the decisions that let their team win, because that is how a franchise makes money.

I am curious about what went down for Gene Chung though. Quite frankly, being a HC seems like a leap for him, he has mainly only coached for the position he used to play and he never even has held an Offensive Coordinator Position.
Great points.:thumbup

I didn't even know who the hell he was before this bruhaha, the article doesn't say what level of coaching position he was trying for, I doubt it was for head coach, it might have been for offensive linemen coach. Maybe he thought the time was ripe to exploit the environment. If you stay in the same assistant position for 10 years, you're probably not one of the better ones.
As a player:

New England Patriots (1992−1994)
Jacksonville Jaguars (1995)
Tampa Bay Storm (1996)
Indianapolis Colts (1997)
Kansas City Chiefs (1998−1999)*
Philadelphia Eagles (2000)*

* Offseason and/or practice squad member only
As a coach:

Philadelphia Eagles (2010−2012)
(Asst. offensive line coach)
Kansas City Chiefs (2013−2015)
(Asst. offensive line coach)
Philadelphia Eagles (2016−2019)
(Asst. offensive line/tight ends/run game)

Good info here, gents. I don't give a fuck about handegg so most of this is all new to me.

Yeah but he wasn't being funny. at all. And that's not just because I have thin skin, I think you know me well enough to know I don't.

This is nothing new to stand up comedy. If you're gonna offensive, at least be funny and deliver it well. What is "funny" is subjective, of course.

Richards wasn't even try to be funny. It wasn't part of his bit. He just fuckin lost his shit and went on a racist rant. Totally different than a comedian intentionally making jokes on racial stereotypes.

I was just watching Filipino comedian Jo Koy the other night. He was dropping all kinds of racial stereotype jokes. He's pretty funny too.

So I don't want to speculate to much or easily dismiss dudes experience, but the negative conversation he had may have been Rooney Rule related.

In order to try and get ahead of the lack of Black Leadership on NFL Teams in Coaching positions, the, "Rooney Rule," was created to force NFL Teams to interview Minority Candidates for open positions. It does not have a quota requirement for hiring, but it was drafted to at least help close the Opportunity Gap that comes from Pro-Balls relationship with College Ball. i.e it is hard to get a Pro Job unless you had a College Job first unless you were a Pro Player first so you already knew people.

It is entirely possible that dude was shooting for a Rooney Rule interview to force an application for a Coaching position over his head and some dummy told him he wasn't the right minority because they thought the Rooney Rule was for Black applicants specifically, which when it first started (2003) it was, but it has since been expanded to include all ethnic minorities.

No he wasn't. He just lost his shit. I saw some footage from the other parts of the set and he wasn't even that funny in the first place.

This is a whole different tangent (not that it should matter because the other boys are deep into foosball talk). Jo Koy is pretty good. Racial stereotype jokes are easier for minorities of course, because of the whole punching up vs punching down aspect of stand up comedy. If a black dude tells a joke about white people and it's weak, generally will just be shrugged off. White dude tells a joke about black people and it's not funny, a lot more backlash. Not saying that as my personal opinion, just how things are usually perceived. Stand up comedy should be the wild west, as I said before but still gotta know your audience, I suppose.

This reminds me of an episode of King of the Hill I was watching the other day where Bobby tries to emulate the kind of jokes from a comedian he saw (voiced by Chris Rock) and falls flat on his face. :laughing

Auto correct got me, damn it! :laughing. I wrote WASN'T...I agree, Richards wasn't even trying to be funny. He just lost his shit with a racist rant.

When one of my exes broke up with me and listed all her reasons, one of them was I don't like sports. I do like sports, I just don't like stick ball sports. :p

We wanted to call it that but NHL as an acronym was already taken. :)

I'm smelling conspiracy here... I'm gonna look into this more. There's a youtube rabbit hole waiting for me.

I knew what you meant, brotha. :teeth He was not one of those guys that can cross over successfully to different platforms of humor.

I’d be curious to see the overall 2020/2021 statistics after the year ends.
The previous San Bernardino research made you think it was huge by their percentage, until you actually looked at the raw number and realized it was within historical margins.
This NYC percentage of over 300% could definitely be interesting if it keeps climbing.

I don't believe other races use their derogatory terms the same as Blacks. It's not just in humor...

Maybe this is a little more relevant to the topic?

https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/04/us/new-york-city-hate-crimes/index.html

I don't know of other racial groups that have reclaimed slurs used against them, but the LGBTQ+ community have done a ton of work to reclaim the word "queer"

Its used a little differently, and generally speaking, using it to directly address a person or group ("sup queers?") likely wouldn't be received well. But used indirectly (That city has a thriving queer community) or as a rallying cry ("We're here, we're queer, we're here to drink your beer")

It's also less exclusive - Its less offensive for folks outside that community to use the word queer - as long as its done in a respectful manner.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Jew is another example of a reclaimed racial slur.

Oof...that's harsh! I had a boyfriend once who only liked hockey and lacrosse, only because he grew up playing them. He hated it when I watched my Giants or Warriors on TV, but was very supportive of my playing softball. I ended up leaving him, even though he was fabulously wealthy, loved motorcycles and rode them all very well, and was drop-dead gorgeous. Sports had nothing to do with it, though :laughing

I mean for fuck's sake, there is a giant pink triangle lit up over San Francisco right now. :dunno

Yeah, but my point was that you kind of need to keep one eyebrow raise don the whole, Open Season,: in comedy thing. There is no documentation as to a person's intent, you know? I think dude was clearly losing it and doing some pretty gross behavior, showing what kind of person he really was, but it isn't like there was a clear line and now Broski needs to be held accountable you know? There are a lot of shades of grey. Similarly I never really much understood the appeal of Andrew Dice Clay, although I support his right to get on stage and be awful. :dunno

I'm just gonna say that's its fairly amazing to have lived from the time of Don Rickles routines to current times. I haven't checked, but I wonder if Youtube even allows his old stuff. Just one stereotype after another.

While we're at it mentioning comedians, Redd Foxx was so far ahead of his time, considering the various premium cable shows featuring black comics these days. Listening to Redd Foxx records was a naughty thing we got away with because of older siblings. And yeah, we listened to Bill Cosby records, too.... okay Boomer.

Personally, that sounds like a situation I normally like. You have your thing, I have mine. Don't have to agree, just accept.

Not going to ask about the other reasons why it ended. :p

No disagreement from me here.

To clarify, I don't want comedians being held accountable for anything they say on stage. Being held accountable, to me, means nobody's buying tickets to your shows anymore because they don't think you're funny. A self-enforcing system. I don't need comedians shamed and 'cancelled'. Getting to that point starts stifling the art. Some comedians say some really stupid things on their social media platforms they get in hot water for but that's a whole different conversation.

Also, as someone that likes going to comedy clubs on random nights where you don't know who might show up, the stuff that's officially filmed for Netflix/HBO/etc is usually fairly 'tame' compared to what you might hear on a random Thursday night at [insert club] and the crowd isn't 'enjoying' the experience watching through their phone screen, recording to share later.

Richard Prior. Though I did get to listen to Red a bit at my friends house. Cheech and Chong were a little edgy about hitting racial stereotypes without using derogatory labels.

I was expecting this to end with something along the lines of "spanked them all soundly and sent them to bed!"

Just a reminder to the Raider haters:

Al Davis hired the first Hispanic HEAD coach, Tom Flores, and Art Schell, the first African American HEAD coach in the modern era.

Knowing how he was, he probably did it purely as a marketing gimmick to sell more merch.

You do have to give Art Schell credit though, under his leadership, the Raiders managed to string together 2 winning seasons in a row, which is a nearly unheard of accomplishment for them in living memory.

I mean, even if you hate comedy, everyone should watch Harlem Nights just for the legendary living history in that picture.

Tom Flores won 2 Super Bowls, you can't diminish his accomplishments no matter how hard you try. :x
