Personally I think this is an attempt by the Media to divide us once again. And as mentally weak as people are it won't take much to have us all looking at each other with suspicion. Corona has EVERYONE on edge and right now you cannot be perceived as a target as they say blood is in the water and the Sharks are circling.
Travel in groups, be aware of your surroundings, carry pepper spray.
And I also find this portrayal of Asians as weak to be bullshit. I remember when a pack of Asian dudes caught me and my cousin cutting school over near James Denman Middle school and beat the brakes off of us LOL. These guys out here involved in all the fuckery WILL run into a group of young Asian savages and they are going to regret it. I got my head slammed in someones gate and about 25 stitches behind my ear you know what I learned TRAVEL IN A BIGGER GROUP.
This is more a decline in moral decency than a coordinated attack on a specific ethnicity. I've stepped in between a group of kids accosting a older Asian woman on BART before when you project confidence and make it known you are willing to legitimately fuck someone up they back off. Asians need to start doling out some vicious street justice and I guarantee this shit stops.
Solid post Critter.
Interesting numbers, but seems kind of like a surprise side jam. What do you suppose is the reason for the variance on that table and specifically how do you feel that plays into this larger conversation?
Crime. Needs. Drugs. Bad upbringings. Etc.
Let's call crime what it is, for example; Burglary = Property Crime and Murder = Violent Crime
You know, when a bunch of thugs grab an elderly Asian person and put their hands through their pockets, that isn't a hate crime. It's just a crime (robbery.)
+1. The crimes we're seeing are crimes of opportunity. Why Asians and Black Americans? Proximity. See: Hasidic Jews in NY. Same thing. Anti-semitic? Not the case, despite media reports stoking that fire. Gentrification and Ortho Jews moving into poor neighborhoods, pushing existing residents out. Much like Californians in Idaho and Montana.
I feel this is the case as well, but with pretty ambiguous metrics on how hate crime charges are applied, it's almost impossible to really tell how many are based off racism vs opportunity.
Again though, I struggle with the idea of a hate crime as a classification in law.
You know a hate crime when you see it. I've told the story before; in High School in a smallish town in PA, one of my best friends (and family) had a cross burned on their lawn. They're Tongan, from Oakland who moved back to PA. They were a tad creeped out, but not offended enough to file charges. Police did. The town supported them immensely. I watched the trial...we were on our way there when we walked out of the Wawa and the kids escort pulled up with them in the back of the car, cuffed up. They looked all of 12 to me. One was 19, the other 16. They got 8 and 2 years, respectively. Federal. It was obvious, their crime. I feel great they got real prison time.
The White on Black crimes that are classified as hate crimes aren’t usually committed to steal, but because the attacker has a prejudiced view of the victim.
Is there a reliable resource for the comment tho? I mean, I think plenty of white/ black crime is just good ol' fashioned crime. Crime, being an act of opportunity. The news media HIGHLY over represents all hate crimes on all races. It must sell well.
But, bottomline is a policy based on race. Each person is an individual (duh). It is of no solace to a rejected Asian applicant that the slot was given to a ________ person. To this applicant, he/she was denied entry despite favorable numbers, because of his/her race. I don't mind a "holistic" approach to admissions, provided it's not race-based.
What AA does is force races to compete with their own race for slots. Think about that for a second; is that good thing or a bad thing? It seems highly inequitable on one hand. OTOH, it seems a competition for "best of the race". Where does it leave us as a society when people figure this reality out? That they want a certain race doctor, lawyer, etc.
That's the problem I find may arise.
One less racist hate crime committing turd off the streets. I hope PG&E keeps the power grid fully energized for this one.
Drugs. Again, fucking drugs he was on.
1. Having people tell me I should go across the room and talk to the only Asian girl on scene.
2. Professors confusing my name with Asian classmate, for the whole quarter.
Two things:
1. White males seem to be THE WORST in keeping their mouths shut about other races dating/ marrying white women. There is no political affiliation that makes this worse or better, but by my count; my Democrat friends are worse than Republicans, although that may be because the Reps don't seem to talk about politics much.
2. Berto. In no way could I claim any issues against me from my race (height, sure), but my name is a funny one when transacting over email, phone, etc...anywhere someone hasn't seen me in person. There are times (several a month on some months) where I get the whiff the other person is treating me different due to my name. w/out a doubt, hispanics are treated at a different level than whites. I most recently experienced this at the service department of a local car dealership. It was very interesting.
