Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

I wasnt planning on getting another lens in another month or so (happy with my Nikon 50mm 1.8 and 18-135mm) but the price was too good to pass up for a NIB. But if I have the money to burn right now, my ideal pair would be the Nikon 17-55 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 and i'll be set.

my brother has the 70-200 f2.8 and its sharp on his d700...the only thing about those 70-200 2.8 is the weight...i have rented the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 and man both lenses are top notch...so now having two bodies with those lenses will be a good combo...70-200 on the crop and 24-70 on the FF...

check out www.borrowlenses.com sometimes they have this promo thing where you can get 1 week free on top of your order..

+1 for borrowlenses. Those guys are awesome, I've been renting from them since it was just Max answering phones and one other dude running to Starbucks with a bag full of lenses. :laughing They're good people to do business with. :thumbup

wd...my maxtor gave up on me, i can still get files from the drive but it wont let me write on it...it sucks ass big time, especially when im running out of space...

That's supposed to be an awesome lens. I've never tried one, but I've heard very good things about them. :thumbup

It's a nice one , got one for the ole man for his toy collection . Took a few shots to show him how it works .

Ah, sorry. Yep, a 50 definitely makes a light kit. I'd want wider though. Have you seen this?

The 35mm f/1.8 DX Nikkor

About freakin time Nikon made a wider fast prime that doesn't cost a zillion dollars.

It's roughly the same size as the 50/1.8 and costs ~$200. If I used a crop camera I'd be on this like white on rice.

Saw that and I was tempted but im saving my cash for the 17-55 and 70-200.

Some sample photos of the Tamron. No post processing, just resized and ignore the chef, I was focusing on the Creole seasoning.:laughing

WD +1. Two 1tb WD drives here, both have every picture I've ever taken on them. I feel ok about drive failure, and my wife has instructions to grab either one of them if the house catches on fire and she has time to escape. :laughing

HDD? For general storage I normally buy the second-biggest available and don't get a fast drive. I'm looking for longevity and best $/GB. I'd go with WD first too, but it's an emotional consideration.

I've been buying 1TB WD internal drives(WDGWD10EADS) and swapping them out as my macpro fills up. You can get them from macsales.com around $120 with shipping. Just like any drive they'll eventually bite the dust so you should also back up to other places and media.

I'm using the D90. If you saw Sean's rick roll video, I recorded it on it. Of course Youtube doesn't really show the quality all too well... It's pretty sharp and at 720p it's a good size. Manual focus only is a bit tough, and you gotta mess around with AE Lock to make it so video doesnt keep changing exposure every second. I wouldn't really use it to do any sort of professional type filming, but it's convenient thing to have. Tripod is a must too.

If you need a backup cropped camera, the D90 is pretty swell. I've used my dad's D300 a bit, and it's basically the same thing except his costs more, weighs more/bigger, and has a few more features I don't really need. Everything easy to adjust quickly, and besides that weird mirror lockup error thing you saw once, I haven't had a problem.

So I've been messing around with ND filters to take long exposures in the light.

The only problem that I've run into is that at times, with the filters on, I can barely see the subject that I want to focus on. Results is that some of my pics are just out of focus.

Any tips?

Focus with filter off?

Well, the thought did come to mind but I worriy that when I put the filter back on I will screw up the focus again.

Edit: forgot to add that the front of my lense rotates when it focuses
