Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

Tripod? Hood?

Seriously on the hood. I try to have a jacket and a ball cap with me when I'm shooting for use as a hood and glare-shield. A jacket will also serve as a changing bag in a pinch.

Yep, on a tri pod with a hood....which would also make it a little difficult to put the filter on after I focus.

Again this is just an extreme case that I ran into a couple of times the other day.

I was shooting a stream and wanted to get as long of an exposure as possible so I stacked two ND8 filters and tried to focus on a rock that was in the water but it was so dark it made very difficult to see if I had it focused 100%.

Oh, sorry. I meant the other kind of hood that drapes over your head to make it darker and that'll make it easier to see it. I also try to carry sunglasses for cases like this... if I'm going to need the hood I don't want my eyes to adjust back to normal so quickly.

Ok, good idea. I'll try that next time. Thanks!

If you didn't have that hood on, you could also just focus without filters on, then hold the filters up with your hands instead of screwing them in if you are worried that will screw up your focus.

I don't know if I could hold the filter still for 3-5 seconds. I didn't have my fix so I had the shakes.

If you're on a tripod and shooting more than a couple of feet away, how is screwing on the filter half a turn going to change the focus? (I'm assuming you can hold the end of the lens still with a finger while you screw it...)

Good idea!........I'll work on my screwing:)

Maybe set your camera to a narrower aperture?? f/16 and up? This will increase the DoF.

edit: forgot to add subject distance is a factor too.

battle damage anyone?
i got a scratch of a grand canyon on my 70-200.
got it from lending it to someone while i battled in the cardboard board tubefight.

Don't think that will buff out.......what a shame

I'll bet it doesn't show up in the pictures. Worst case scenario, the lens is more prone to flare than it used to be. Long lenses are nice that way. Anything on or near the front element is so defocused it doesn't even show up.

For example: 420mm (300 + 1.4TC) shot with the front of the lens at an angle up against a chain link fence. (Yes this is my pic. I was working for Joe)

And battle damage? The filter ring of my 24-70 took a solid whack in Yosemite, when I was scaling a rock and the camera swung around my body and CRACK right into the granite. :(
