Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

first off,

I say again, SUPER Thanks to Cycle61.

The D40x you sold me produces excellent shots with my 55-200mm.

2nd,

This is my new old school lens, awaiting arrival.

Funstuff.

Sweet pics, good to see it's found an appreciative home. I'm proud. :)

2nd: The D40 and (x) are unique among the Nikon bodies in that they will meter correctly, and not have any mechanical interference with the old pre-AI lenses. Pretty much all of the other ones require an expensive modification to the lens. You're gonna love it. :thumbup

I'm predicting 24mm, 35mm, and 85mm f/1.4 lenses to be introduced shortly. That would completely refresh the f/1.4 line: it would be the only line to be all current lens designs if I'm right. This still leaves a lot of FX primes that could use updates, but at least the FX prime lineup would be remarkably full with a wide range of options.

Also also: I'm pretty happy with my new 35/1.8 so far. No real world pics, I'm kicking myself that I didn't bring it today with the kids playing in the snow above Livermore, but I'll get something posted soon.

I would punch a roomful of nuns for a 24/1.4....:love

If I were a bazillionare, I'd have a Canon 5dMII just so I could use that lens.

Lightroom, Photoshop, NeatImage, PhotoMatix if you do HDR images.

Well, that's what I use. Lightroom is good for most stuff, and is a handy RAW preview tool, as Vista doesn't support thumbnails previews for RAW (this simply confirms Vista as the POS it really is).

If I could have a do-over, I'd have got a Mac for doing work stuff at home :|

Photomatix is only good for HDR if you want your HDR images to look like everyone else's. The look is far too telltale for me. But them I'm of the mind that you shouldn't be able to tell that an HDR is and HDR. it should just look like an image with extraordinary dynamic range.

I do mine by hand in photoshop.

98% of my images only get the Lightroom treatment, some get hit with the NeatImage hammer if they need it. Very rarely do I need to go into photoshop.

The default settings in Photomatix overdo it... as do most people - I can get nice results that fool most people. Not sure if you'll agree with the posted pic, but I can post the source images later :)

I'm hoping to be able to drop NeatImage when I upgrade the camera...

Hmm... this is the top-end image.

When I do a comparo between the 3 images, looks pretty good to me?

The thing that leaps out at me is it appears to be a bit over-saturated.

This might not be the best example as even the originals look a bit 'HDR'ish.

But also bear in mind, this is my attempts at manually adjusting stuff with Photomatix, it may well still be 'overdone'.

Point being, I think the tool is fine, I think that for most users of Photomatix, it's what they do with it that's the issue.

I saw that on BorrowLens's twitter a few hours ago. :laughing

Also, meet and test shoot with Amber and Crisieda just a few minutes ago at Borders'. Amber is a MUA, and Charlena wants to get into some modeling. Hopefully gonna be working with them a couple of times here. Can't upload any pics right now because I'm at Starbux with no USB cable. Looks good on the camera screen, I'll share later if they hold up fullsize. :thumbup

Also, I swear I'm gonna give in and get an iPhone one of these days. Just a few more articles like THIS. :)

Good suggestions, thanks. I'm not thrilled with how they came out. I should have stopped down to 2.8 or so, and been more careful with my focus points. She was happy with what she saw though, should have some more refined stuff with her over the next few weeks.

I like the high ISO capabilities of your camera. Mine is horribly grainy at anything over 400 ISO. Nikon definitely does high ISO better than Canon.

Canon Eos Rebel XT:

Is this a decent camera for $250. no lense?
