Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

What was that for? What did I say?

I'm staying clear of the C vs N brand wars. You all know my preference, and the reasons why. I would tend to agree that N has the lead in high ISO performance right now, but certainly not with the D200. These look decent with regard to noise because I processed them carefully, and they're significantly downsized for web use. The originals aren't too pretty. I'd say N is half a generation ahead, at best, with the top of the line bodies. The D3/D700 took the crown a few years ago, Canon fired back with the 5DMkII, and Nikon has again responded with the D3s. Canon owned the lead for many years, and probably will again at some point. The pendulum swings both ways, and to be honest, it's tough to buy a bad camera these days.

Thanks for the response, Nick. I was in no way trying to flame the wars here. I was just making an observation based on my limited experience. I don't read and reviews or keep up with the latest and greatest. I just take pictures with my lowly Xti
and, based on what I saw, your d200 has better high iso capabilities than mu xti. Maybe I should have said that instead of generalizing.

I'll just shut up now.

Here is a 100% crop :))) of a pic taken at ISO 1600 with my XSi. And a reasonably sized copy of the full image. Would you guys consider this excessive noise?

Taken at 1/100s f/2.8

I'm guessing that was a Jpeg with the NR turned on medium or high. Looks fairly clean, not much chroma noise, but some detail gets lost. Certainly not excessive, and perfectly usable for most purposes.

In other news, the SJ Childrens' museum is awesome. I haven't been there in quite a while, should go back soon.

NR settings have not been adjusted from the factory so whatever the stock setting is is what it is at. And yes, it was shot as a jpeg. I'm curious to see what some of the higher end bodies can do at higher ISOs.

Here is one at 800 1/60s f/2.8

From the factory, Noise Reduction (NR) is almost always turned on high, because it gives cleaner images out of the box. The sacrifice you make is in fine image detail. FWIW, my D700 at ISO 3200 looked about as clean as your pictures above with the NR turned off. The Canon 5DMkII is about equal to the D700/D3.

Here's one, at ISO 3200 with no noise reduction

Fussing over high ISO noise is one of those slippery slopes where you can get overly mired in the arguments or afraid to push the ISO capabilities of your camera. At the end of the day, its all about getting the shot, and that's on of the things that High ISO avails us.

I shot this a few years ago at a benefit at the DNA Lounge. It was at ISO 1600 on my Canon 10D. The 100% crop ain't so pretty, but very few things are when you scrutinize them under a microscope.

I just shot another benefit last night at the DNA. Will be interesting to see how things have improved since last time.

Hey Nick,
Been following this thread for a while... good stuff. Didn't you pick up a 35/1.8? How do you like it? I'd like to get a 35mm prime (no DX) to fit between my 20/2.8d and my 50/1.4d.

I haven't really had a chance to work with it much, it's a little soft at f/1.8 but seems to be pretty solid, overall. Mostly my daughter has been using it for shooting low-light stuff that needs something wider than the 85/1.4. Nice to have a fast lens with a "normal" focal length. I'm going to try some real shooting with it and see how everything goes.

As for the 35/2 that you're looking at, opinions seem very mixed. I've tried them a couple of times, and never been very impressed. Maybe that focal length just doesn't do much for me. Dunno. Will probably have some more solid answers in a few weeks.

Really need to print more stuff. I always seem to stop one step short of having a tangible photograph, instead of a pretty image on a computer screen.
