Do You Mountain Bike?

Does anyone have any weekend getaway trips for MTBing? I'm trying to plan a trip but have NO clue where to go. Any ideas? Of course I want something with lots and lots of singletrack. That's really the only requirement. Thanks!

Some of us just raced Boggs Mountain forest area. IT's got a huge campsite and the single track is freakin awsome smooth and swoopy. Alot of climbing but alot of payoff and we barely explored the park. There are tons more trails we never even saw. Weather was awsome. Pizza joint and nice liquor store half a mile away. 2 hr drive.

Not alot of technical DH though if thats what you are into.

22 miles at Napa Valley Dirt Classic this sunday scott, one lap. Just 5-10 miles from Boggs, very similar terrain. Only the climbs are more severe and a few more :ridedownhillish fun sections. The pro's are finishing the lap in 1:33's average 2hr's. C'mon man, you did pretty damn good at Boggs. We are going tocamp out Sat night and come back sun night. You can register in the morning. Lets show those 20lb bike ninny's what real riding is like:teeth

For some good info check out some of the current threads in MTBR. Alot of those guys have done this many times so you can glean more info there than I could offer. Word is though that aside from heartbreak hill (1200' in less than 2.5 miles, whereas Boggs was 1200' over 4.5 miles) this is a super fun course.

Last Sunday

Corte Madera? These are all I got. :/

Yep!

It was too slippery, since it was lightly raining and slightly damp. Plus, the rocks don't give any traction anyway.

Looking back on it, if I did the lockout on my forks, I could probably mash up that hill.. :)

Is that the little tech climb on Manzanita? Still haven't been able to figure that one out yet...

For me, it's half setup and half line selection. Start on the left, cross over halfway up (I think the best crossover point is right before a tree root), then grind up the right hand side. There's a thin but rideable line between the rocks - if your front end is wandering, it's tough to get.

I've done it on a GT I-Drive with 2.1 Panaracer Fire XC Pros at 32 psi. My Stumpjumper FSR with 2.4 Mutano Raptors at 40 psi weren't hooking up as well over the rocks, and I couldn't put the front tire on the line I wanted - due to the steepness of the grade and the short stem I like to run, it wandered a little with each pedal stroke up the hill.

Yeah, I wonder if I had a lighter bike, if I could do it..

Another thing I noticed is super important for "trials" type scenarios, is fitness. If you're in great shape it's a lot easier. If you hardly ride, its real hard.

The GT I used was actually heavier than my Stumpjumper - it was probably just over 30 lbs. It also had a longer stem which placed more weight on the front end, so it didn't wander quite so much on technical climbs.

With that same bike, I had a 30% success ratio climbing Two Dollar Hill at JMP. It's far from the 98% or whatever Ryan does, but it's a hell of a lot better than my current 0% with the Cannondale :)

you dont need a lighter bike. i've done it both ways on my enduro, just stand and mash. lets ride this weekend people

I wish. I can't.

I just did lexington, 3 loops. About 10 miles and I did the long climb each time. Feels good leaving it in the middle ring the whole way up and cranking hard.

I absolutely love that this thread has managed to reached epic purportions - 256 pages!!!!! It doesn't quite meet the span of my mountain biking career (closer to 18 years) but it sures makes a valient try!1!!

Mountain biking is in a word (2 actually) the bomb.

After about nearly 5 years or so mostly off the bike while I learned throttle control, I am back on the mtb (and the road bike as well) riding as much and better than ever and loving every minute of it. It also has improved my stamina and skills on the motorcycle (of course).

Lately I have been just riding local trails, Fort Ord and Toro Park, but I am itching to get back out to some of our more epic rides such as Wilder, Nicene (sp?), Ora Stimba and other out of town (for me) locales.

I am thrilled to read some of the places people are riding in Marin, and need to delve into it further. I grew up in Mill Valley, at the time of the birth of mountain biking (a good friend, who made Ziljian cymbals for a living, was earnestly modifying beach cruisers in his garage for this new sport, and later founded WTB). New born "mountain bikers" were running from park rangers tryng not to get tickets or just general harassment for riding on "running" trails.

Another good friend, who spent a great deal of time drawing wild pictures in my mother's kitchen because his "famous" muscian father was nowhere to be found (to this day have no idea who his mother was) later in life became a fixture on Cannondale's MTB bike team, as their head mechanic, and then later opened his own custom wheel shop in Fairfax, Gravy wheels (apparently with a partner, but that is a whole other contreaversy). His co-mechanic Tom was the younger brother of my best friend in middle school and high school.. I guess what I am saying is that there is a rich history for me in Marin and mountain biking.

But the few times I have riding there over the last years is that there is a great deal of restriction outside the parks ( I guess I am thinking mostly of Mt. Tam) and would love to know more of the cool riding spots. I think it is nearing time I go back and revisit my home county, and learn some cool places to ride.

Julie, what's you last (or maiden) name?

We have probably ridden or raced together in the past. We might have smooched even. (but I remember most all of the female riders I have smooched with in the past) At leat, we ran in the same circles.
Is Steve Potts your buddy who worked for Zildjian?
I remember when Steve G was just a greasy nailed wrench (and a hammer on the bike) Do you remember Jaque Phelan racing in a dress and a funky western shirt all the time? :ride
I am Gregory Kuhn

Hmmm... Gregeory Kuhn... I don't know your name is very familiar.. Yes indeed, Steve Potts. And when Steve G was hanging with us, he was years away from picking up any sort of tool for a bike... in fact he spent numerous hours drawing - I always thought he would end up being an artist or something.(we were just teenagers!) Oh my, the stories that come to mind.. I could spend hours.

My last name is Gennert... went to Tam High (most of the time anyway...)

Several of us will be DH racing at Toro park tomorrow. (Sunday 4/13)

We will probably get a ride out there sometime tomorrow, but most likely a family ride (with some friends who have kids that ride) but we may run into you (hopefully not literally). Are you getting ready for the Sea Otter?

MAddy and I are practicing in the Sunset :teeth

Damn, everyone and their mom is riding bicycles these days!! Even the Moto GP race meet at Benders was all bicycles.. :rolleyes

Napa Valley Dirt Classic

Had a smart race. Finished with a strong kick and had nothing more to give at the finish line. Never went anaerobic for more than 1 minute. Raced smart, and due to a clerical error I won the Junior 14-18 Sport class:ride:p
In my actual class I didn't do as well. Lots of fast guys with grey hair out there these days.
