Do You Mountain Bike?

Looks like I'm looking for a new set of shifters, I'm running some of the older XTR drivetrain including front and rear deraileurs and cranks. Should I go for XTR shifters? Anyone have anything they wanna sell or recommendations? Thanks!

Looks like China Camp tomorrow for us... :)

Oh yeah? What time are you planning on being out there? I know some people who may want to join ya.

If you like the Shimano shifting (I do :teeth) as opposed to the Sram shifting then I would definitely go with the new Shimano stuff. I have an older XTR rear shifter on my Nomad and a brand new "08 XT rear shifter on my DH bike. The older XTR is really plush but the new XT is even plusher.

And if you wanna be really trick you'll make the switch to the Sram X9 or XO grip shift in the front. Sounds corny but once you get used to it you'll never look back. :thumbup

Last but not least, ... I have mid-cage XTR rear derailleurs (new style, '07 or '08??) on both bikes and they are exceptional.

How do you guys keep from hitting the grip shift 24/7? When i bought my first Full on DH bike, it came with a grip shift. I had trouble during races where i would be going through sections and it would shift, b/c i had twisted it unknowingly.

I only use grip shift in the front and I just don't seem to have that issue. Possibly I hold the bars differently than you
or possibly from many years of aggressive motorcycle riding both street and dirt I just sort of learned how to hold on tightly, ...loosely. :teeth

I will also say that some people just don't like grip shift.

The other good thing about grip shift (and I only benefit from this on one side) is that you will never smash your knee and rip it open on a grip shift. Ask Doug. He swears by them.

+1 for grip shifters... although it's mostly -1 for triggers which I don't care for. Some people just don't like triggers :shocker

If your grip shifters are shifting when they shouldn't, stop twisting them!! Or just twist it back. Harpo's prolly right that motorcycling was good training for holding on to a twisting grip tightly, but loosely. It's a much more difficult task on a MC to modulate the throttle while muscling the MC around. Just takes practice... but Scott, don't you ride MCs?

Anyway, Harpo's recommending the grip front shifter b/c it gives the possibility to fine tune the front deraileur on the fly. I agree 100% and do that all of the time. Just my two cents...

My XTR trigger shifters rock (expensive), but then again, so do my SRAM X0 grip shifters (reasonable). The XTR's are a little on the sensitive side, but banging two shifts at once, with out a hitch is a huge plus.

I think I like my X0 drivetrain better than my XTR though as far as smoothness of the deraileurs. Both of these are worlds better than XT or X7 for shifting under load and for decreased chain suck. The 2007 XTRs are much much much better than the 2007 or older LX or XT stuff, so if you were gonna go one level below, I'd either get 2008 XT, or 2006+ X9.

I have a problem of my own though. Under heavy load, I am getting a click that seems to be coming from my BB on my XTR cranks, under normal or minimal load, the click goes away, and the click occurs only once through each pedal stroke. Are my bearings shot? These are brand new cranks and BB's, and the only real action they've seen was the Xterra in Granite Bay. Any ideas?

Bearings almost definitely Not shot. I'm certain I can make it go away. Could be any # of things and I might not narrow down which one it is but with the overall "creak be gone" tune I'm sure we can get it. :thumbup

I love Harpo stories. From the "How Fast On Public Road" thread at http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4014040&highlight=noid+harpo#post4014040

Dude, how do you come across this shit. :wtf
On the other hand, either Noid or Robbie is Great for my little ass to draft :teeth
Yea, back when I used to have balls. 50 or 60 crashes ago. :(

What do people know about painting plastics? I'm looking to paint a pro tec DJ type lid with a cali flag type of motif.

Wanna sell some shifters? :teeth

I'm thinking of going with some XT's like Harpo mentioned but they look pretty fragile with the entire housing made of plastic, although I'd guess they're fairly light, man those XTR's sure look like some nice bling but I don't think I'm gonna go for the $180 shifters :wow tempting though....

Apparently, not very early. We leave Vacaville @ 0900 hrs. So... 10ish I would say. Should not be too hot tomorrow...

Answers to all of the above.

Bap: double check of tightness on bottom bracket bearings and pedals usually takes care of rotational clicks.

Key to non intentional grip shifts: Run a full length grip on the outside of them. Keep your hands off them. May be tough with riser bars. Space is limited.

Yody: XT shifters are superb. Very durable and cheap. The XTR set the bar, but they are sooo expensive it's hard to justify the cost.

I just got a '08 Shadow series XT rear derailleur which is supposed to be a marked improvement on everything preceding it. I will give a report this week.

Best money you've spent this year??

For me: $246(super deal + employee discount) for Mavic CrossTrail wheelset. Tubeless capable, 1800g/set, and havent needed to be touched with a spoke wrench. $220 (closeout Greenfish) for Manitou Nixon Super was good money too. 145mm travel, Basic effective tuning controls and good steering precision.

Best Money I've Spent This Year...

$5 to ride Tamarancho with Doug and Joe (Who knew it would be a 4hr lesson?)
$90 for M545 spd pedals, clip out in mid air yo.

Raced Boggs with them, I just hold lightly, or grip outside of the shifter when pulling hard on the bars.

51:45 at Tamarancho this morning! All the triathlon training has really worked out well for me, considering my best time until one week ago was 58:00.

If I started logging major miles on the roadbike again to drop another 10 lbs, run a little less sag in my shock, and swap out to a 170mm crankset for some additional ground clearance, I'm wondering how fast I can do it. The Specialized pedals so well - I just have to get it to stop bashing its pedals into rocks :)

If I'm coming close to that 50 minute barrier, I figure someone like Ryan or Scotty can come close to 45 out there.

This is fun!

Congrats on the PR:applause

But, aren't you supposed to be doing an XC race tomorrow?:confused:wtf
