Do You Mountain Bike?

Hey I'd love to bike with you guys, but I just relocated permanently to the bay area and have no bike... I sold my Intense Tracer a couple internships back. Anyone got a line on a nice Intense frame or Ventana or Rocky Mountain? I will build it up myself... but I need a nice frame!

XC please :)

Just missed a medal in my XC race yesterday.

It was an 18 mile, four lap event, and I held down third for most of it. I was all alone for most of lap 3, and decided to click it down half a notch to let my legs recover. Somehow, the fourth place rider closed the gap quickly, making the pass at the start of lap 4 just before the start-finish. The guy literally came out of nowhere.

His burst of speed ran out on the first climb, allowing me to close the gap. From that point on, it became a chess match. I was outclimbing him, but he was cornering faster than I was on the loose stuff. I figured I could follow him to the line and explode up the hill, but there were 3-4 loose, grassy corners right before the final climb to the finish - I was pretty sure he'd gap me enough there to hold me off at the line.

I put my strategy into place, and decided to pass on one of the final climbs, gap through the faster section, and run defensive lines in the last few corners. My plan fell apart when I drifted wide on a faster corner, allowing the other rider to slip ahead of me again.

That was when slower riders from another wave came into play. The other rider made a pass on a younger rider that I couldn't follow, putting a 2-3 second gap on me. I tried forcing a pass on the same rider, but couldn't make it happen - he was on the edge of control and couldn't really slow down.

In retrospect, I probably should have done a few things once I took the lead:

- ridden conservatively in the fast section where it's difficult to pass instead of trying to make a break
- saved my strength for passing slower riders
- ridden defensive lines in the last few corners
- left myself something for the sprint to the finish.

Part of me is bummed that I didn't take home a medal, but I'm looking forward to doing it all again :)

Bearings almost definitely Not shot. I'm certain I can make it go away. Could be any # of things and I might not narrow down which one it is but with the overall "creak be gone" tune I'm sure we can get it. :thumbup

Bap: double check of tightness on bottom bracket bearings and pedals usually takes care of rotational clicks.

Yody: XT shifters are superb. Very durable and cheap. The XTR set the bar, but they are sooo expensive it's hard to justify the cost.

I just got a '08 Shadow series XT rear derailleur which is supposed to be a marked improvement on everything preceding it. I will give a report this week.

I'm gonna have to come see you guys again soon to get my rig worked on.

Wanna sell some shifters? :teeth

I'm thinking of going with some XT's like Harpo mentioned but they look pretty fragile with the entire housing made of plastic, although I'd guess they're fairly light, man those XTR's sure look like some nice bling but I don't think I'm gonna go for the $180 shifters :wow tempting though....

Sorry, I've got them all on my bikes. No spares. I scored all of my shifters on ebay though. If you are patient, and find auctions that end at weird times, you can get some really good deals. Less than $100 for my brand new 07 XTR shifters, and $60 for brand new, in the box, XO grip shifters.

nice write up...and good seein' ya out there :thumbup

i DNF'd......tore the threads off my rear non-drive side nut (solid axle) about 10 feet after lap 1......ugh.....never figured i'd get a mechanical on a rigid SS :mad

Thanks! The strategy reminded me a lot of roadracing - it's one of the elements of motorsports I really miss.

I read about that - that's a serious bummer!

I used to think single speed guys were nuts, but after chasing someone one of the guys at Annadel on a lightweight single speed next week and reading an article about it somewhere, it actually sounds kind of neat :)

ps - they are fun....well, not half way up a steep hill......

Great write up Mike – felt like I was in the thick of it. I live vicariously through you racer boys (and gals)! Podium at the next race!! Let me know… I’d like to go and support you guys.

Looped China Camp Saturday with S2RGRL and Achilles. Relatively short ride – not very technical at all, but fun in it’s on right. Nice views at the top. Was HOT, but the cool down was quick as you made your way through the shadows and the single track. LOTS of people (riders, runners, hikers, camera-yielding tourists, etc) – I was a bit surprised. Saw a lot of great bikes – MANY hard tails – made me feel all happy-like! I’m making China Camp my hard tail destination. :)

The locals were out and tearing up the place – those fckrs are FAST! It was GREAT watching them. A couple of “newer” non-local riders were trying their hand at the dirt – and one of the riders bit it bad in front of me. He was going too quick around a corner and could not control his bike – he hit the side of the hill and tilted left – couldn’t clip out so he roooooollllled down over and over and over to the left down off the trail. Must have been at least three rotations of the guy - he screams, while rolling – “Ahhh! My finger!” – seems a tree took a nice chunk out of his “gloveless” pinkie – ouch. Hope next time he gets good gloves and ditches the loose basketball shorts (his ass-crack was showing the whole time – S2RGRL so considerately points that out to me – hahaha!).

Good times… Next weekend – Skyline.

Good job Mike!

I raced the soil saloon yesterday on my Intense Tracer, lots of SS guys, and one awesome dude on a Uzzi (easily the biggest bike out there). It was like a mini poker run with fun stops. They had Indian territory; Gravediggers site, Sherriff’s, Gold Miners, and a Bandit. It was a short course with either beer, shots or smoke at different stops. We had to get gold nuggets at a creek crossing from the miners, and then give it to the others for cards, five cards and you finished the race. I noticed I was getting bumped from behind by people for no reason, like in a wide part of the course or where everyone bottlenecked slowly. Turns out some asshole was trying to break my derailleur, fortunately it held up and I finished anyway. :twofinger I was joking with all the people at the different stops, and in the end I won a category. The gravediggers awarded me for “best eulogy” because I goofed with them every time I went by. So you don’t have be the fastest or some raging ass yelling “heads up” at everyone or bashing someone’s bike to win, that alone makes the Soil Saloon my favorite race this year.

So you guys went all the way to the top? That's a pretty good grind :)

Wish I could have met you guys out there - I had to finish my day up early though. We're doing Muddy Buddy this Sunday, so we're probably taking it easy on Saturday - I'd be up for a little Tour de Skyline, but the gf might want to rest. If it looks like we can make it, I'll let ya know!

Ah, that must be the "underground race" someone mentioned. Sounds like fun :)

You took the Intense with you the last time you rode Tamarancho?

No that was the big bike. Hope to get better times through climbing on the XC rig.

I've sent the email to a couple of you - anyone interested in doing a BikeSkills riding clinic @ Tamarancho on Saturday, June 21?

They have one on Sunday, June 22 but that conflicts with the CCCX DH race.

when are you heading down to SLO mike? there's a ride a few people i know are doing the last weekend of November that you need to do with us :)

Cuesta starts mid-august, so right around then. I'll probably post here and on MTBR soon to see if any moto / mtb friendly places need a roommate.

Keep me posted!

Will do. I'll extend an invite to anyone whos interested. We will start at 6am, and finish around 5pm. Big climbing and long mileage. The guy in charges only rule is no granny gears...no 3 ring circus.

It will be epic. The best of SLO, in a day.
