Do You Road Bike?

Mike,

If you want to continue using your SPD cleats on your road bike, I have a pair of Shimano A530 pedals I no longer use. Here's what they look like:

The right-side pedal is a bit nicked up from a fall I took a few years ago, but I only stopped using them because I switched to LOOK Keo pedals.

Cool, how much? and why the platform? Do people use it?

I have these on my Mtb and love them. Although oven never used anything else.

I am just getting into road bikes and recently bought a 2011 Fuji SST 3.0. Now I have to figure out what pedals to get and a few other things like tweaking the bike ergonomics to fit properly. Any good shops in the bay area, preferably the peninsula, that anyone can recommend would be helpful.

Awesome to see more people get into biking... Haven't ridden in a while due to priorities; but I wouldn't mind joining you SJ folks for a chill/ relaxed ride. Please pm if you guys get something going in the weekends.

I bought my rb online (bikesdirect) but had goride bicycles help assemble and had the bike fitted to me. Super cool people, and although I didn't purchase a bike from them - they treated me as if I did. My bike included spd pedals; so when I asked them if I should upgrade to more expensive road pedals, the sales guy just said to stick with spd first and that I can always upgrade later. :thumbup

About a month later, after a good friend of mine saw my rb, he immediately bought his fuji roubaix from Cognition Cyclery. Good folks, they mostly sell specialized stuff, but they were super knowledgeable and you can't go wrong with any of the two aforementioned shops.

This is very helpful! Thanks JN!

Heck, I wasn't thinking of selling it. I'd rather pay it forward. They're yours if you want them. There were days I just wanted to wear sneakers, so the platform side came in handy.

Holy shit! I admit to being a huge Star Trek geek, but I don't know if I would ever wear that. Especially not the 'red shirt'.

Pictures from my ride last weekend. I can't wait for the wind to die down.

I totally dig the Gulf Oil color scheme. At the time I bought my CAAD10, that color scheme was backordered for months, so I ended up with the Liquigas Replica.

:thumbup I'll definitely post up rides when I get my bike in a week or two.

Haha, thanks!

My girlfriend and friends think it's a hipster color. I dig it!

What drink, if any, do you guys use on a long ride? Mainly energy I guess and fatigue help.

Noticed a major calf cramp the other day....first ride back after a long hiatus. Before the ride I did mix a packet of some gatorade endurance I had around. Took a few sips and cramp went away bout a mile later.

Gel packs and chews during the ride. What gets me tired is not eating enough the day/night before. I also take in protein and carbs the morning of. Always stay hydrated. I have to remind myself to drink water.

the cross bike ive been building for the past year is fully functional and ready to get beat on.

I thought protein was "bad" for pre-ride?
I like Nuun, but I'm looking for a bigger package electrolyte add to water type to share with 3 friends.

It really depends on your fitness level and on how long and what the intensity of the ride is. For short rides, 2 hours, I just bring water. If it's hot I mix in NUUN tablets, just electrolytes. For 3+ hours I start mixing in Gu2O and bring a baggel to munch on. I like Gu2O because it's not too sweet. I tried others and to get 200(ish) calories per bottle it makes it way to sweet. In general just get whatever tastes least horrible. :laughing

As for gels, meh unless it's a road race I prefer regular food. Plus that shit is expensive. Again this is what works for me, others might do it differently.

+1 I don't race or anything fancy but I've been riding more and getting faster and on short/fast rides under 4 hours, just regular food and some water seem fine to me. Haven't tried electrolyte tablets though.

I went on a recreational speed 50ish mile ride today and brought water, a snickers bar and had a beer after the climb when we stopped halfway and was fine.

I bought a Ultegra DI2 bike on clearance a little while back and finally took it out today and it really is nice to never worry about shifting. Doesn't get me up hills any faster though. :(

Thanks for the snack tips!

I'm riding to train for a late June sprint tri AND also to lose weight. I'm used to the gym mentality of cardio on an empty stomach, like in an hour spin class. I'll test and see how far I can go cycling without food/energy. I took half a scoop of NOxplode the other day and about 5 miles I was getting dizzy and had to pull over for 5 minutes.

As for Areobars, how does these look for only $20? I don't need full on shifters or anything. Just for flat stretches where I keep it in gear.

Also doing my first sprint tri in june.

Did a 36 mile loop sat. That's a lot for me.

Palomeras, niles canyon, sunol, foothill.

Carry a spare tube and learn to change it quickly. Having a flat during a race shouldn't end your race if you're prepared for it.

For sure, I carry spares and levers and a pump, and I can change a tube quickly - and it won't end my race (I phrased that badly), but it'd certainly knock me off of the podium, and that's what I'm out there for. :) Faster tires might help my time, but training would help it a lot more - that's what's most limiting right now.

I got on the box at the Silicon Valley tri again this weekend - I want to get on the top step, so, yes, more training. The bike portion was interesting - there were defintiely folk off with flats (I saw two on the way to the turn-around and three at the turn-around just in my stint), and the traffic was just insane. I ended up passing a semi on the left up a hill, and a pickup truck and an SUV on a downhill. :p

We got wine:

Protein is perfectly fine as long as you don't consume too much. Protein is very common before workouts for endurance athletes. I had to experiment with carbs, fats, and protein intake before my first triathlon.
