Hip Hop: What the Hell Happened??!

My favorite music genre of late is “SHUFFLE”... if I don’t like the music, I press the next arrow...

Songs I hope I will never hear as I have heard them over and over on classic rock radio for the last 40+ years: Sweet Home Alabama, Stairway to Heaven, any long drawn out dirge from Pink Floyd....

I find it really interesting when people tie their identity to a genre of music. I did. I'm not shitting on it. I think it makes people kinda of defensive and tribal about music though. As I have gotten older my tastes have gotten broader. I think I can find a good tune in almost any genre. I'm defining "a good tune" as one that evokes an emotional response from me. Some songs pump me up. Some are for when I'm bummed out.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion about what is good and what isn't. I have found that I enjoy music more when I just listen to a song with a more open minded point of view about what I could like. I for sure think some stuff is lame and ain't for me. I haven't really heard much new hip hop that does it for me aside from Eminem's new album. Hes far from a new artist tho. YMMV.
I'm with you on most of that. Don't think there's a genre i dislike as a whole. Def 95% of what i listen to is rap though. There's tons of good music and artist outside of the genre though. Anyone writing a genre off as a whole is just selling themselves short. My comment on metal and rock has nothing to do with disliking the genres just fyi.

I could listen to, and enjoy, dirtbag rap to make fun of it, but it's generally not a positive trait to genuinely enjoy representations of a gnarly criminal lifestyle, even if it's presented in an artistic medium. Certainly interesting from a societal decline standpoint.

My playlist on spotify looks like somebody just hit shuffle on the jukebox in the bar.

Darude - Sandstorm one minute, Judas Priest - Turbo Lover on next, DMX - Party Up after that. Give me any genre and I'll find an artist or a song I jive with within it.

Just seems like a weird thing to me, on a topic of something as subjective as music, to shut down any particular genre of music as all of it isn't good.

But in the name of humor and keeping this not too super serial,

Kind of like how ICP is pure shit but it is fun in a we are laughing at you, not with you sort of way. :laughing

(and nobody will ever admit to listening to it :shhh)

so much good new music, can't believe the go to is still stuff from the 80s/90s for some of you guys. I'll admit i probably have more time than most to listen to new music. Or at least did. Quarantine, no excuses :)

More than half of the artists in the list I provided have current stuff. :dunno

Gangstarr still making music is kinda a stretch, though i did like that last project and i am a fan. There's a few on that list im not familiar with honestly.

Nas doesn't make good music anymore. And i say that as someone that thinks Illmatic is arguably the best rap album of all time.

I mostly agree. Most of the stuff after Hip Hop Is Dead is mediocre.

Well...... Guru died like 10 years ago, so it would be hard for Gang Starr to continue to make music without an MC. DJ Premier is still arguably the best producer in the game.

I’d recommend checking out the artists on the list if you like old Nas, Gang Starr, etc...

Czarface is a newer group comprised of Inspectah Deck from Wu-Tang Clan and Esoteric, with 7L producing most of the beats. Very strong lyrical duo.

Jedi Mind Tricks and the larger scale Army of the Pharaohs will open a new world of artists for you. Apathy, Celph Titled, Blacastan, Planetary, Doap Nixon, etc... all great MCs.

Ill Bill is another fantastic lyricist. I’d start with his first group called Non Phixion and work forward. Non Phixion’s first studio album titled The Future is Now is a Top 5 album for me.

Sean Price is dead, but his first few albums from the early-mid 2000s are fantastic as is his work with Heltah Skeltah.

Definitely look into Apollo Brown. His beats are on the same level as Primo and he picks to good artists to colab with.

reading up on the newest Gangstarr album, it seems like Guru recorded the rhymes before his death, after their last album. Premier reached an agreement with his family and produced it.

I like how you know who i was talking about not knowing:laughing thought czarface mighta been typo for scarface but that's it.

Oh also forgot to add meek mill is really really good as of late, that championships album is an instant classic. Tory Lanez been putting out fire too! Huge young MA fan.

Just so much stuff drops each and every Friday, sometimes midweek, i haven't loaded up the 2pac stuff in a very very long time.

It's good, production is really well done, as expected. Hasnt gotten much replay from me though.

There's a budding bromance here.

Love is love.
