Hip Hop: What the Hell Happened??!

I get what kornholio is saying and I agree with him.

A few years ago, my friends and I were in a band and a couple of us took a class at DVC about recording so we could cut an album for cheap.

The producer (and one of the teachers) said he really appreciated us because we came in and played our music, rather than engineered a bunch of stuff by sampling like EVERY OTHER PERSON IN CLASS was doing.

You could tell the difference in the final product. While ours was raw and their were audible mistakes in the recordings, it sounded real and was. We played that shit live.

That's basically a portrait of myself, and I do play bass, so yeah. :twofinger

I've seen like four posts of yours in the last day or two. All have the words bawls or pants free in them.

And if that looks like you, you might want to get that thing checked out. Looking kind of faded.

If advising a snotnose no talent kid about breaking into the music industry I'd probably suggest they pursue the hip hop angle. Don't put a cap in my ass, just sayin.

Since I'm a musician, it's hard for me to listen to rap sometimes and think that anything talented was done by the people on the microphone side. Not always the case, but certainly most of the time. From a pure musical talent standpoint, I do not and likely will not understand it. Drum machines have a learning curve, as does Autotune, but it's not hard for someone to read the manual and figure it out in an afternoon and be "writing" songs by the evening. Real music takes real instruments IMO, not sampling, drum machines and spoken-word lyrics. I do very much appreciate "Old School" (funk and old "rap") music as that was made with real instruments by musicians, not some hacks with a label overpaying a producer to make them sound "hot". :dunno

rapping is no different than singing: most everyone can do it poorly. lots of those people think they can do it well. but in reality almost no one can. this in no way diminishes rap being actual music just like it doesnt for singing.

if u want to talk about the bottom of the barrel, its actually easier and quicker to make shitty music on a piano than in software. open piano, press keys, done - shitty music. but its stupid to define a craft or talent by the bottom of the barrel. the people that are good at producing beats, EDM, etc devote just as much time to their craft as instrument musicians - and their craft is music.

That's why I invited him to Faces.

X2 well said

Humor aside, I'm curious if this is the hill you're willing to die on.

Not liking a genre of music and saying none of it is good are two very different things.

So, since a significant consideration in quality of music with vocals is the singing of the artist, so, yes, I am willing to put that out there. Rap is mainly trash, just like Punk Rock and Death Metal.

Because apparently Rappers as a general rule Do Not Sing. From what I can tell, some even CAN SING, but do not do it on their Rap Albums, because that, I have been told, isn't rap. While there are exceptions, the Genre it seems is intentionally about shitty vocals. If they do get some real vocals on a track, it is often a guest performer.

U should take a listen

I respect your opinion and will review it based on that recommendation.

Hip hop has no melody harmony or rhythm. It ain't music to me but some people think a screaming engine is music.
Listen to whatever turns your crank but for fuck sake keep your windows rolled up, no one else is interested.

I could take your preferred genre of music and write an equally condescending post about it calling it trash and not real music.

So I suppose this discussion is pointless. Based on my conversations with you over the years, I was hoping you'd at least try to level with me.

You do you, man.

That is a completely inaccurate statement, BP.
