Mines and Mt Hamilton Roads: The Official Thread

Recently...
We were up there with a bunch od dudes, all over the no parking area.
Local dude pointed out we were in the no parking zone.

“No Parking” means leaving your vehicle. If the key is in the ignition, you are only “standing”. That is how the law read, last time I looked. Back in the day. Prolly changed.

Who you calling :afm199

Heads up! Mines road (from Livermore) is hella dirty after recent rains, marker 9 is basically a pile of gravel now. Be careful and take it easy!

Thank you, sir!

How are the water crossings?

At least from alum rock entrance up to the top, I didn’t see any piles of gravel or water crossings. I did notice some sections of pavement were a bit rough where they cut out whole patches to refill

The Junction is reopen, with new owners. For now it's a limited menu (hamburger / cheeseburger / drinks), they should be expanding soon.

Mines: More gravel than usual, be careful.
San Antonio Valley / Mt. Hamilton: No problems.
Del Puerto Cyn: Did not ride, but talked to some who did, they didn't report anything unusual.

still have yet to make a mines rd trip. I think I'll wait until spring since it seems to be a bit more treacherous in the winter months

Outside the total f#$@!ng idiots in cars the road is not bad. Couple spots are dusty and it looks like mile 9 got cleaned up a bit or the report earlier was way exaggerated

Mile 9-10, my nemesis ... always has gravel ... I always want to carry a broom with me :laughing

I guess ya'all missed the news of the rider who had heart attack and died few weeks back on the east side a few turns from Lick observatory.

Mines and Mt. Hamilton were great today. No issue at the mile 9 marker, though you can see where something was swept up. The usual water crossings were a little wet but not deep and not growing algae. Great day to be out.

I got a short ride halfway up the Ham side, first time on the Alta Motard.
Whoa. Very turny thing. Different than any other bike I have ridden.

Edit... there was a gaggle o groms going up. Group o Groms? Gathering of Grommits? Funny stuff.

A lot of Hamilton was repaved recently (I haven't ridden it in a year or so.. so it may not be that recent). Surface was great... however there are no center lines so a lot people are treating it like a one-lane road. Didn't feel great.

San Antonio Valley Road felt way more bumpy, can wildfires damage the road surface? There was one terrible right-hander (around 37.350387, -121.534975) that has some bumps about a foot or two of the center line... I felt the front tuck twice in quick succession but luckily I didn't lose it completely.

And then on my way into Livermore I saw a hook & ladder, one EMT, and one patrol car heading back towards Mines. Was concerned that the Camaro and E36 M3 had an accident behind me or that something else happened. Anybody know where to look or heard anything?

Next time look at quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ with everything enabled, CHP accidents will show.

I just rode the short bottom piece of Hamilton to Grant Ranch and back. Way sweet. I have not quite ridden to the top and back, like 42 miles from my house. No range problem if I am mellow, but if I am “on it” I run out of electrons as the ride reaches completion. Or before. We call that “range anxiety”.

Rode Mines to the Junction, out to Patterson and back, over Hamilton, then took Sierra/Felter to Calaveras to complete the loop. Was good to get out. Most roads were in good shape, though Del Puerto is a war zone. The front side of Hamilton is wonderful right now.

A bunch of Mustangs were pulled over on Calaveras, a couple of them wadded up and being loaded onto flatbeds. Be on the lookout for morons.

Oh my. Just rode the lower section of Ham to the Fire Station. OMG.
Don’t tell anyone. New, perfectly clean pavement, no bumps…

I think. Not sure.

Ride from alum rock side up to observatory and back down. Didn’t see the mustangs, but there were a pack of morons in dodge challengers trying to be cool with crossing the double lines, squealing tires around the corners, etc. too bad they didn’t get flatbedded as well. I’ve been quiet about the new pavement because I love having the road to myself. Barely see anyone up or down these days :D
