So. I went grocery shopping today. On my walk back home, I stopped by a restaurant to order a to-go plate for lunch. Had a beer while I was waiting. Somehow between the grocery store and the restaurant, I lost my wallet. Didn't even notice til my food was ready, finished my beer and I asked for the check. I told the waitress I'll be right back and retraced my steps between the grocery store and restaurant. Nothing.
So, I asked my waitress if she can get me the manager. (Yes, I asked to speak to the manager
)
I told her we have a problem and explained what happened then asked, how do we handle this? I can venmo or paypal you. She said don't worry, you're good. I've been eating at this restaurant for at least 6 years. They know me, hell they know where I live 1/2 mile up the street. She did me a huge solid, said enjoy your food and see you next time.
It never came up but in my head I'm thinking/panicking, I have a bag of groceries so clearly I just used some form of payment recently. Also, what am I gonna do? Skip out on a $20 check and never come back to one of my favorite local restaurants? I'm at this place enough, most of the time, I don't even order anymore. They know what I want and I'll be clear immediately if I want something different, food and beer.
I always tip well here but I'll leave a really big tip next time I'm there.
Maybe the universe also did me a solid after dealing with the headache of the no-water situation the past couple weeks at the house and my landlord being a complete assclown about it. Or maybe the simple answer is, it's not that fucking hard to be nice to people no matter how and why you know them and often enough they'll be nice to you too.
