Radio Controlled Airplanes?

OP-

Congratulations. Sorry I'm so late to the party- but everyone else gave you perfect advice.

You are a MUCH faster learner than I. I started off on the ParkZone SuperCub, and I still managed to crash that--- A LOT!!!

That was 6 years ago. I have about 16 planes and I've been trying to get rid of stuff. Geez- it is addicting.

One plane that you should get is a ParkZone T-28 Trojan. That is an AMAZING plane. It is not as sexxy as the Corsair or the P-51, but it is a fantastic plane.

It is a fun hobby. I fly at Bayfront Park in Menlo Park on early weekend mornings.

For anyone who is interested in getting a Flight Simulator for cheap- check out this http://www.hobbypartz.com/60p-dyu-1002.html

I had my buddy order this last week. I then set it up for him on the weekend. It requires you to download the planes/helis from the FMS site. It comes with one free plane, then the others you must pay for. If you order five or more- you can get them for $2.00/each. Order planes that look like the ones you plan to purchase .

Good Luck, and feel free to contact me if you have any issues- or just want to get together and fly.

Fraz-

That is so funny- I was typing as you were posting and we both mentioned the T-28.
I had so many of those. I would crash/rebuild crash/rebuild, over and over again.

I still have a white one, I had several grey ones, but they went to plane heaven. What a fun hobby/money pit.

You guys are funny! It was a toss up between the T-28 and P-51. I knew the T-28 was a better plane to begin on, but my friend who flies a lot was confident that if I stayed mature and really worked on building skills before trying to do too many things at once, the P-51 would be a better plane to "grow into."

Nonetheless, I ended up with the P-51 and am having a blast with it. I can't believe how addicting this shit is, seriously. All I keep doing is looking out the window at the trees to see if the wind has died down enough to let me get another flight in!

The real surprise is that I get 10-12 minutes out of a battery, in fact, I've never ran one down all the way yet -- I just set my alarm to 10 minutes and bring it in a short time after. On a 1300mAh battery, my friend (and I) were shocked!

I'll try to get some more flight-time in and when I'm not a danger to everyone else, we should arrange a nerd-fest get together and fly some shit!

Now that your hooked on fixed wing, it's not long before you'll try your first heli. There's nothing like flying something with a 5 1/2 foot rotor span of spinning carbon blades 3 feet from your head!

You weren't kidding about preferring nitro. I don't know anyone that flies nitro any longer..

But nice chopper nonetheless. You got anything flybarless?

For helis, anything above my Blade400 or Trex450 I use gas... for .90 sized helis electric power is just too limited for flight time and its insanely expensive! (and dangerous too! When I charge the lipo cells for flying things that large I have a steel containment vessel and a fire extinguisher right next to that. The equivalent in lipos to 24 nicads I used to use to fly in a JR Voyager heli is essentially a firebomb if you're careless in charging :wtf For cars and trucks its mainly electric of course and boats half and half :)

Right now I'm building a PT-19 around a OS SurpassIII 120 4-stroke :) when I'm done with that I might put that motor in a P-51. I LOVE the 4 stroke sound and realism... a 120 4 is about the equivalent of .90 2 in power but as you probably know 2-strokes in r/c aircraft just kill the suspension of disbelief! They sound like flying leaf blowers :( and electric power in a larger aircraft? Well... those sound like UFOs

Here is the same scale p-51 model one with an 120 4 stroke and the other with a .90 2 stroke... The difference in sound is significant in the videos, but even more impressive in person!

4 stroke power

2 stroke power

Next motor is a 1.60 4 stroke opposed twin in a Spad bi-plane :)

Oh! Flybarless I had an EC-135 that my wife bought me as an anniversary present, and that was a dream 4 blade rotor, but well... ummm... :RIP :(

My SIII 120 4 stroker waiting to be installed :) At one point I wanted to buy a jet turbine JUST so I could fire it up and run it on a stand LoL! I'd be terrified to try to fly something with that engine in it. The proverbial "flying your wallet" :)

I just looked it up. That things looks like it's barely above the rubber band airplanes that I used to play with when I was a kid.

Ever seen a slowstick with a Brushless motor, and a Li-Po pack? :laughing I have and it flew like a bat out of hell. I spent more money then I should have in R/C flying death traps.

Horrible photo of my plain jane, GWS E-Starter. Brushless with a Hacker motor and Castle brushless controller. Can you say vertical + torque roll? :cool

Right before going brushless. This is POST airstrike with a fucking 400 class plane, that decided to NOT call out he was crossing left to right as I was landing... :teeth Left overs of his Mad Dog, shown... :wtf

Death trap money pit. 100% modded out Blade CX2

I guess the convenience of flying in public parks is what does it for most people. I've always been intrigued with 4 strokes because I agree they sound better. The other thing is i'm not sure about the torque and responsiveness of nitro vs electric. Function>Form IMO. But i'd love to try one out one day

But as far as flybarless..wow. Big difference in smoothness and responsiveness. My buddy just maidened his Trex 700 DFC the other day. It flies like the ones in the sim. I always thought the sim was full of crap until I flew the bigger stuff..then I was like..yup they're that smooth and stable.

I've always been much more a "scale" flyer even in aerobatics :) I practice flying them as they would look in real life, but ocassionally its fun to fly a Cessna inverted LoL!

Totally agree on going bigger with Helis makes them easier to fly... Things aren't as twitchy and happen a bit slower than the smaller electrics. In almost everyway my Raptor .90 is MUCH easier to fly than a Blade CX2 entry level indoor heli :laughing That is if you fly in a sedate manner or you're learning the basics of hover. Its one of the reasons they do a lot of heli aerobatics with the large gas models, they're more predictable because of their mass and also far more resistant to wind effect. Also they're impressive because of their size :)

The first time I hovered the Raptor I was sweating bullets expecting all kinds of things to be happening at once! It rose up in slow motion, hovered there like a ROCK in a pretty decent crosswind, and then I landed it again and it came down in slow motion. Next flight was a slow figure 8 in front of me and I was like, "That's it?! That was easy!" LoL!

I used to joke with friends that a Raptor .90 gas helicopter with a 5 foot rotor diameter is a good choice as a trainer for a Blade CX2 :laughing

Honestly besides the fact that it's a 3 thousand dollar flying chainsaw, I agree

Sunnyvale and Santa Clara are way cool with "Park Flyers". Others are really rather apathetic about it. That is, till you fire up a plane that sounds like a weed eater.

I HAVE to get one of these just to play with! Or a Jet Joe turbine with afterburner! Those will go thru a gallon of fuel in afterburner in 15 seconds LoL!

Found a video of the Jet Joe 1800 with reheat! (afterburner)

LoL! Agree! But Here's Alan Szabo flying a gas .90 and he makes flying chainsaws impressive! He's my hero!

His precision is infallible.

I call though, with Tareq flying a Synergy E7. Skip to 2:45 for lawn mowing. Electric power is not too shabby

Amazing! I admit that performance wise gas and electric each have their own inherent advantages and benefits, and you couldn't really say one was superior over the other until of course batteries get FAR cheaper :) I could definitely be happy with either and it might just boil down to the fact that I grew up with gas models and there kind of in my blood :)

That is one of the coolest onboard videos I have ever seen, thanks. Good deeds get extra miles in my book.

I begrudgingly bought the t-28 cause it was not sexy looking or anything. But I bought because of the overwhelming number of pros who recommended it. Now I miss it badly and _WILL_ buy another. Been flying my 450 heli mostly lately and trying to get better. Started as a cheap HK kit and now I have it set up with BeastX flybarless with Align DFC head. Flies like a champ.

Feanor... give a shout out when the 4-smoker gets in the air. Would love to check that out. Those engines are amazing and pull some killer torque.

Can one of you guys recommend a quad copter kit that is beefy enough to carry a gopro?

I would need everything including the controller.

what's your budget? I'd recommend going as big as you can afford. especially if you're flying outside.
