Retail giants are blaming their lower profits on theft...

You were 25% more likely to be murdered in Nevada than California in 2021, which is the most recent data.

Total Violent crime is closer, but Nevada is still higher.

LOL, Reno is gonna Reno.

As with all stats, almost meaningless. Most of Nevada is desert, and the big cities are the violent ones. Probably 90% of California land mass is almost violence free, but LA and the SF Bay Area make up for that .

I'm not even sure where we are going with this. The thread was about theft/retail shrinkage.

WTF does this have to do with a weird Desert/Casino Drive through state?

I lived in Miami during the Cocaine Cowboy days; even witnesses the Dadeland shooting that was the straw that broke the camel's back for law enforcement.

People were predicting Armageddon but it didn't happen.

Big problem looming therre now is gridlock.

Uhh, don't have the slightest idea. I was hoping you would. This thread has been KSed, it's just a Rambler station wagon now, slowly but comfortably moving toward a boring end destination, but with AC and tinted windows.

As usual, it's not nearly that simple, but also way more interesting, and a perfect example of why the "common sense" narrative of dangerous cities and safe rural is really bad for trying to actually understand whats happening and the importance of actually looking at data.

Some rural counties are above average, while some urban counties are below the average. (though I would ignore the Alpine County data since it so small).

2019 data: https://www.ppic.org/data-set/crime-rates-in-california/

2014 data is on wiki in a way easier format for comparison over time

If I get really bored, it would be interesting to put the last decade together and graph it, I suspect there is a lot of noise in the data from small counties, so single year snapshots aren't ideal for comparison. Though ideally the data would be sorted more finely into blocks of population density instead of using counties as a proxy.

To me one of the most interesting trends nationally is how poorly rural areas are doing in terms of crime, that seems to be a change of kind as opposed to quantity, and is something worth looking carefully at.

i'm so confused. you talk about 'money CA people bring', but then that last bit 'I don't know what world you live in when you think only those with money move out of the state'. feels a little selective and dependent on the particular argument you are trying to make at the time.

and just out of curiosity, were you born where you currently live?

It is not that complicated to understand, it is common path. City is growing at very fast pace. Most people coming in are from CA. Many businesses from CA came here as well. Their money goes much further here than in CA. That in turn keeps rising prices and makes it hard to keep up for locals.
Pace of growth is creating all kind problems, crime is going up, homeless population is going up (believe it or not they move as well, not only the ones with money move), infrastructure is not keeping up, what it used to be 10 minute drive is now 40 min. Quality of life is going down.
People moving in are outnumbering locals which means everything is changing, from politics to way of life.
I do understand growth will happen and don't blame CA people, I put it on local politicians. I do not like what is going on with area but fortunately I have exit plan and will be out of here in few years.
Kind like that other thread here about corporations grabbing land from farmers, they don't like it.
My point to other guy was not really about CA people moving here but rather why they are leaving state in those numbers. What is driving them out?

And I am not going to defend it because I live in it. You could not pay me to live in Las Vegas and some other parts of this state.

Ah yeah, that was a bit of a jump in my head, but it's a reply to TWF talking about how everyone is bailing on California to go somewhere "safer" From his location of "Desert" I am assuming he is in Nevada and not Oregon.

My friend who lives in rural Sonoma County near the Calistoga border is the subject of constant night time vandalism.

Just yesterday they drained their water tank over night and broke the pump wiring.

This during fire season.

Dozens of other episodes despite putting up cameras, motion detect lighting etc. etc.

I constantly have to remind him not to shoot them if he catches them out there one night.

That is just silly to even compare. California is a major Metro State like NY, TX, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio.

NV can't even compare, I mean, for fucks sake, they only have 2 things. Vegas, which is awesome, and America's Ashtray, which is a complete shit hole in addition to being wildly dangerous.

It is silly to try and even compare them, you may as well bring the most violent State in the Country into the conversation, Alaska, but everyone knows it is an odd duck no one should try to compare to other ones

LOL, why would you remind him of that? Do you not like solutions to problems? ;)

Yet they moving there with TX been number 1 destination.
You could also say half of CA is shithole. Whole Central Valley, most of Mojave and desert area.
Here is what Californians have to say https://www.movingapt.com/top-reasons-why-people-are-moving-out-of-california/

Yes, of course I would. You forgot to include everything north of San Rafael too.

WTF does that have to do with anything though? Even on the list you provided, property crime doesn't even make the Top 5 reasons, let alone Retail Theft specifically.

:dunno

I agree with you that the desert is a shithole.

My brother lives in a Dallas suburb.

As of August 14 alone there were 36 days of 100+ degree days with 21 of those being in a row.

More to come this week.

Forgetabouthatshit.

And the area might as well be in Georgia where my sister lives as they are all formula towns brimming with identical shops and chain restaurants.

Where people die going for little day hikes. Plus, who knew there wouldn't be much water in areas without much water.
