Santa Clara County Lockdown

Come on people, no one riding on a empty road is putting anyone other than themselves at risk.

That said, if you all think this is going to be over in a few weeks, you need to look at Italy. We waited too long like they did and we have less hospital beds to people than they do. We fired our Pandemic Czar and CDC leadership 2 years ago and didn't stock pile supplies. It's going to be just as bad or worse. Start planning for months and be prepared that restrictions and challenges are going to get worse not better anytime soon.

This isn't going to be easy. But the good news is it could be a lot worse. "Always look on the bright side of life..."

Unless you're a carrier, which you very well can be for several days without knowing. Then, if you crash, there is a very real possibility of infecting all first responders + hospital personnel and many more.

FFS it's really not that hard to think of someone other than oneself for just a little while. This advice is the same as saying "it's fine to ride without insurance, you're not putting anyone but yourself at risk" :thumbdown

I got called in to work today, apparently we've become essential. I rode Concord to Fremont, left Concord around 9am got home at 4:30.
There are a LOT of cars on the road. Either there are a lot of essential businesses or people aren't taking this seriously. I don't know which.

heard military shit is going to happen next week.

Fun fuck.. fun.

the internets... I try not to believe anything until... there is enough real stuff.

anyhow, I had a wonderful time at Carnegie today. As it might have been implied, if you go out and hurt yourself you are irresponsible.

So yeah, i had a great ride, hero dirt, and all, but did not challenge myself to where I might need help from anyone within a six foot radius. So there is that. Personal responsibility.

Then i was thinking about driving home. Folks who use those their phones while driving are unnecessarily risking the first responder community by having to have have them deal with distracted driver shit.

BARFers are smart. I just worry about the folks that might hit us.

Stay safe.

From the Guardian...

California has extended its shelter-in-place order to cover the entire state, the governor announced on Thursday, in a dramatic escalation of efforts to battle the coronavirus outbreak.

The order, which will go into force on Thursday evening, requires the state’s nearly 40 million residents to remain indoors and limit outdoor movement to what is “absolutely essential”.

What does 'shelter in place' mean? California's coronavirus order, explained

The move came as Newsom on Thursday estimated that 25.5 million people – roughly 56% of California’s population – were likely to become infected with the coronavirus, an alarming projection offered by the governor in a letter to Donald Trump. Newsom called on the president to deploy a navy hospital ship, the USNS Mercy, and station it in the port of Los Angeles to help the giant metro area deal with a fast-moving health crisis.

“In the last 24 hours, we had 126 new Covid-19 cases, a 21% increase. In some parts of our state, the case rate is doubling every four days,” Newsom wrote, adding that evidence of community transmission had been found in at least 23 counties.

“We project that roughly 56% of our population – 25.5 million people – will be infected with the virus over an eight-week period,” he said.

At a press conference on Thursday evening, Newsom acknowledged the severity of the order and urged Californians to band together. “This is not a permanent state, this is a moment in time,” he said.

Edit: I cannot find squat on what would be legal documents, but this is also in The Guardian...
“ Thursday’s move echoed steps taken earlier in the week by San Francisco and five Bay Area counties, which on Monday issued a shelter-in-place order closing down non-essential businesses and urging residents not to leave their homes unless necessary. Bars...”

The caravans I have seen on the highway.....
It has already started...

One of my passengers was telling me this they saw a buncha HMMWVs in Mountain View. The National Guard has been put on alert. But that convoy in Mountain View was not National Guard it was an Army reserve unit returning from training. That's what the military does folks they train driving those huge armored deathtraps called up armored HMMWVs. So the military isn't doing anything yet.

But hey if the military was going to contain something it'd be like this

I still think this is a big overreaction over a virus that is less deadly than the influenza. If it were ebola or something you should be worried, survival of the fittest!

A PSA on the Corona Virus (probably safe to share on BARF)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hks6Nq7g6P4

^^^This isnt humorus to Whammy.
Just stirring the pot which isn't necessary.

Also the National Guard has assets that can be deployed anywhere at anytime such as Mobile Surgical hospitals, or Mash if you will. Then there are CSH or Cash hospitals. (Combat Support Hospitals). I betting that's what you all are seeing on the roads.
Whats funny to me is most of you all don't know these entities exist and they are probably right under your noses locally or in the central valley.
Movements of equipment will be put in place to help augment our own medical care systems.

Ships. We have two hospital ships.. one is active the other has been given priority to get ready for deployment.
The USNS Mercy is here already off San Diego and Comfort will cover NY areas when its ready.
Each have about 1000 beds.
Whammy has flown to both ships during the Gulf war and other deployments. The crews on each are some of the most highly trained professionals and the most awesome people you want to meet.

I think its pretty premature to sound the alarm, and run around in circles just yet.
There is already too much of it going on in just this thread alone.

Butch if you wanna ride... go ride :thumbup
Whammy still loving driving for hours on his simulator and I just downloaded all six seasons of Sanford and Son.:teeth

Are we reading the same info? Mortality rate is currently estimated around 2% for this virus versus 0.1% for the flu so while there's no need to buy all the toilet paper, it's certainly something to take seriously.

Influenza has generations of data to rely on. At this point the mortality rate of C-19 is completely unknown because we don't have test kits for 330 million people. If you can't determine the denominator (how many have it and have survived), how can you draw meaningful conclusions from the data?

Carnegie is in San Joaquin Country, outside the original 6 Bay Area county shelter in place area. If you "travelled" from Santa Clara County to get there, you've violated the intent and spirit of the shelter in place order against non-essential travel.

By the way, Metcalf OHV in Santa Clara County is closed due to covid-19.

I assume he meant the common flue kills more people in numbers so far, but not understanding the fact that covid-19 has way higher mortality rate than flue. If allowed to spread unchecked, covid-19 will kill way more people than the common flue.

I haven't been riding. But, technically this wouldn't violate the current shelter in place order. And on the list of things not to do this one is pretty low on the list.

1) recreational riding is "non essential travel" and we're being asked to not do that.

2) "technically" splitting lanes at 65 MPH while traffic isn't illegal, but that doesn't make it incredibly fucking stupid and selfish.

Just to ensure MC commute demographic is represented - for those of us in "essential" occupations who still have to show up somewhere - I don't think riding to work is socially irresponsible, quite the opposite - solo MC commuting is by definition social distancing... more responsible than riding public transit IMO, less dangerous now on the freeway than it ever has been, in as long as I can remember. I've changed a lot of behavior these last few weeks but still need to get to work, MC is always how I've done it.

Be safe, keep your distance, stay healthy everyone.
